I have to admit that I enjoyed hearing that #70 is reporting as eligible. That always meant that the beef was coming. But having he and Hawes to choose from is a nice wrinkle for the offense.

Before that, it was Tommy Doyle (#72?) who started the trend for Buffalo. We had some fun with him reporting each time as that season progressed. But for sure last year the Bills were super successful using that package (with Anderson).

I could stand to see more 3TE sets.

It'd be pretty awesome if we could go as condensed as 3TE to spread 4x1 based on the opponent because it means whatever the defense is doing, you have something to try to counter with

I seriously doubt that Hawes is a better blocker than Anderson so, unless he’s going to get consistent targets in the passing game, it will be a downgrade when the Bills go big. They threw to him once last night and it was a big play. The running game was below last season’s averages. I don’t like that trade off.

Now, it’s the Ravens and just one game, so we’ll see how this works moving forward but I’m not in favor of reducing the effectiveness of the running game for 1 or 2 targets a game.

I said this during the draft that Hawes has better hands than people give him credit for.  He had a huge game against UGA and current Ravens rookie starter Starks for GA Tech and was someone I drafted in every mock draft I did as an upgrade replacement for Morris.

My guess is Beane envisions him as Knox’s eventual replacement.

Hawes can catch.

Its a misconception that all he does is block.  He caught passes at Georgia Tech

I had to look it up. He had 16 catches for 195 yards, and that is not nothin’.

In 12 games.

Yes, last year at Georgia Tech he had 16 receptions on 19 targets (84% catch percentage) for 195 yards (12.19 ypc).

Low volume but those are good numbers.

I enjoy watching the trenches so will enjoy the All 22.  Since we didn’t hear anything about missed assignments, and of course the well needed catch, it sounds like a nice start.

Prior to the season, the notion was that him vs. A. Anderson will provide more flexibility.  Not that AA didnt do his job before this year, having an athletic, hard nosed power TE has value.

I look forward to seeing how Brady will weave him more and more into the offense.
