The lesson is the political change only happened after the socialist government ran out of other people's money to hand out in what was simply a vote buying racket. That in a nutshell is democratic socialism. Vote for me and I'll give you free stuff. If you dissect the rhetoric, like cheap or free housing, subsidized groceries, free buses, tax the rich, that's the entire strategy. Nothing they say provides any hint of creating productive activity or growth. Its all about consumption and redistribution. And it works very well until it doesn't. In Bolivia the socialist failed to get an iron grip on power before the money ran out. Because in most cases you can vote your way into socialism but once the masses figure out the free stuff party is over you can't vote your way out.

Two decades of leftwing dominance end in Bolivia as rightwingers head to election runoff

by Tiago Rogero

Bolivia’s presidential election will go to a runoff for the first time, with two rightwing candidates competing for the presidency – marking the end of nearly 20 years of dominance by the leftist Movimiento al Socialismo (Mas). The candidate with the most votes, however, turned out to be a surprise: centre-right senator Rodrigo Paz Pereira, 57, who had started the campaign with just 3% support in opinion polls. In second came Jorge “Tuto” Quiroga, 65, a rightwing former president who briefly led the country in 2001 after the resignation of ex-dictator Hugo Banzer.

and?  the premise was that socialism always fails.  while not pure socialism, the nordic model is far closer to it than our system.  and it hasn't failed.  in fact, it thrives.

It wouldn't with our population. That's the point. The fact you missed it is way less surprising.

Why not.  It's a successful experiment with 21.8 million subjects.  Remember that American Democracy is an experiment as well.  It was highly successful to recently.  I don't think the founding fathers ever imagined someone like trump.

One of those tweets sounds an awful lot like trump.  Inflation, feuding, child exploitation.  Bolivia might be perfect for you guys once this trash is out of the White House.

I like Bolivia, a lot. I know Muppy has spent some time there as well.

It was obvious to me that Morales was never going to work, just a typical Socialist guy who could never advance his country.

Good luck to them.....And......If you are ever in the neighborhood, Bolivian ceviche is the best food I have ever eaten, and La Paz is the most fun place to land.

It still is successful. Demonstrated by the fact the candidate that won the most votes and carried the Electoral College is currently the President. Just because you don't like the result doesn't mean democracy isn't working.
