SinceThe70s Posted June 3 Posted June 3 Minnesota Viking legend and member of the vaunted Purple People Eaters. Also known as "Wrong Way" for getting spun around on a fumble recovery and running into the wrong end zone for a safety. I just read and was surprised to learn that the wrong play happened in 1964, less than a year after I was born. Played an amazing 18 years! Quote
Special K Posted June 3 Posted June 3 Saw an interview with him some years back. He listed off all the great accomplishments of his career, then said the first thing anybody would say to him was "Hey, you're the guy who ran the wrong way!!" He said it took him a long time to just embrace it, instead of stewing over it. RIP 2 Quote

RIP It’s a shame he felt any remorse over the “wrong way” play because he more than made up for that throughout his career. Marshall, Larsen, Eller, and Page have a permanent place in league history. 1 1 Quote
BillsPride12 Posted June 4 Posted June 4 Before my time but I've always had a respect and appreciation for the history of the game. Purple People Eaters is one of the all-time great nicknames in the sport. RIP 1 Quote

Now that I think about it I knew about Jim Marshall the "Purple People Eater" before I knew about him being wrong way play guy. I remember having a wait/what? reaction when I found out. Probably why I always looked at the play as an amusing moment in NFL history and not a reflection on him. Quote

If he could of just held it, they might have got him to bring it out again... He had time.😆 Edited June 4 by ExiledInIllinois 1 Quote
