If you take time to read the link, yuppies are buying into neighborhoods and demanding that they close bars. Like me, hate me, but I (along with AD and others) predicted this mess. Do you drink booze while you drive down the road? Your tailgates have already been made to start later (at least in stadium lots) becasue a certain fan after a NYG game crippled a little girl (on here way back from a pumpkin patch)driving home drunk from the game. I will still enjoy tailgates, just without the booze, same way I enjoy state parks and what not. I don't need the alcohol. I will do just fine thank you. Under his proposal, the burden of proof would be on the owners of bars or liquor stores to show they aren't hurting their neighborhoods. And it should be the burden of these businesses. It is not saying they will be closed. Remember what I said about laws become an attempt to legislate the shortcomings of personal differences? When people can't agree amongst themselves and honor one another, this is what happens. Sorry, I have a problem with wiping out a tradition (tailgates) due to one incident. Btw, much of his alcohol was purchased INSIDE the stadium. Do you support a ban inside stadiums? Not everyone who tailgates maims children. Can we agree on that? There ARE laws on the books against DWI and they also apply to boats. I have zero problem with enforcement of said laws. I in fact welcome it. As for me personally, I have shared beers at tailgates with literally dozens of posters. Please try to find one who has seen me drive. You will not. EIL, I am merely trying to point out that people are flawed, and will stay that way despite behavior control from right wing whackos who want to place Howard Stern behind bars because he is "indecent," and/or left wing dictatorial, intolerant yuppies. What Im speaking about is the thought process in this country to stop any activity in which someone happens to get hurt in some way. For example, there is a park here on Long Island that a lot of cyclists use for training, as it has a perfect one mile oval loop. One day last year, ONE GUY had an incident with a car on the loop. A week later, all cycling in the park was permanently banned. Does that make sense? Same thing with the tailgating incident. Terrible story. But now literally millions of people have to suffer becuase of it? The link between tailgating and alcohol being served in Stadia in this case is dubious, at best. Maybe its my socialist side, or Ive watched too much Star Trek.....but a lot of times, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Most of the old punk venues are closed down due to gentrification of the neighborhoods, or expansion of the Universities (Boston University tried for many, many years to shut down the Rat in Kenmore square. The owner refused to sell to BU, but eventually caved to a hotel developer. They razed the entire block and put up a hotel. Kenmore Square is dead to me). It's nothing new. This area is what "West Side Story" was based on. The Irish Gang ("The Westies") was out of control. They were killing each other. These guys were nuts. The good news is that many different ethnic groups, in time, lived in harmony. There were African Americans, Eastern Europeans, Irish, Italians, Puerto Ricans, and everybody else all in the same buildings and they actually looked out for each other. Apartments were affordable. Today, perhaps you can rent a one bedroom apartment for something in the neighborhood of $2,300 per month, IF you are accepted by the yuppie co-op board. You can walk down the street and eat sushi, or dine in a vegetarian restaurant. Which is better? I am the wrong guy to ask. My life is a latter day version of "West Side Story." I am married for 21 years to a Puerto-Ricana from Manhattan. One daughter attends an Ivy League school. The other scored high on her SAT and is interested in UB. blzrul Posted June 21, 2005 Share Posted June 21, 2005 Tailgates were against the law for years at Texas Stadium - at least REAL tailgates. You couldn't cook because of the fire hazard. Now one must wonder since there are no trees and grass in the parking lot....and since the stadium itself sits quarantined amidst freeways...where exactly they thought this wildfire would go, or who would care when it got there... But there it is. The removed the restriction a few years ago and and lo! That I know of, no ijit has fallen into his deep-fryer and killed his dumb self.
