Why bother with Special Teams?

The only analytics I need is zero SuperBowl wins. This regime and this board overvalues the antiquated thought that special teams matter. #1 special teams unit and they lost in the divisional round at home.

Beane got a franchise kicker. Nice job. After that I would concede one roster spot for special teams. Everyone else should be a player that can actually play his position and be cheap rookie or UDFA.

And go and look at the stats. The Bills were 4th worst in opponent KO ret yards. So despite the money spent they still sucked at it. Bills got #1 unit becuase they were #1 or 2 in opponent FG and XP made. Which has almost zero to do with the Bills unit and all to do with the opponent missing kicks.

Special teams won at least one game for us this year those two touchdown returns by Noel Hines critical to that win

Is Noel some new player that you added to the roster? 😂

The thing is the data does still show that the best teams tend to be good on special teams. I did a comparison of the Bills $$s allocation to STs compared to SB winners a couple of years ago and they were pretty much right about on the average. Happy to crunch those numbers again at some point this offseason to see what has moved, but basically every team pays a few guys just to run about on special teams.

I wonder if there is any information on how many times an opponent starts back at the 10 or 15 because of blocks in the back or holding.

To cough the ball up at the 2 yard line in his ONLY job? Taiwan should have kissed Josh & Gabe on the feet for saving his @— on the next play with a 98-yard TD. There was another major flub he made on ST this season too, but it eludes me rn.

T Jones is getting quite long in the tooth (34? 35?) and his play does not justify a vital roster spot. Keeping Kumerow on the roster when injured meant we lost Hodgins… who may or may not be a steal for Daboll & Schoen / NYG… and then we were forced to scrounge up John Brown & Beasley late in the year.

ST is important and all that jazz… but… not as much as it once was.

Touching the ball on that punt which ended up as a turnover. Doesn’t devalue having core teamers, but it does accentuate the need to pay the correct guys if you’re paying for specialists; same as every other position. I’d like to see better roster management on teams, as well as Oline, Dline, WR. Kumerow should have been put on IR.
