Transgender women banned from competing in women's chess tournaments

KAREN TOWNSEND 10:41 AM on August 18, 2023

The World Chess Foundation ruled that transgender women cannot compete in its competitions for women until officials can assess the gender change. The decision was made by FIDE, the Switzerland-based federation, and published on Monday.

Advocacy groups and activists are criticizing the decision. I admit I’m a little surprised because I didn’t realize that there were separate men and women’s competitions. I don’t watch chess competitions but I highly recommend “The Queen’s Gambit” for an entertaining look at the world of chess.

FIDE said it and its member federations receive recognition requests from transgender players. Approval could take up to two years because it depends on an analysis of individual cases.

”Change of gender is a change that has a significant impact on a player’s status and future eligibility to tournaments, therefore it can only be made if there is a relevant proof of the change provided,” the federation said.

”In the event that the gender was changed from a male to a female the player has no right to participate in official FIDE events for women until further FIDE’s decision is made,” it said.

Holders of women’s titles who change their genders to male would see those titles ”abolished,” the federation said, while holding out the possibility of a reinstatement ”if the person changes the gender back to a woman.”

”If a player has changed the gender from a man into a woman, all the previous titles remain eligible,” the federation said.

Hmm. No transgender women (men) in the women’s competitions. That is the first time I think I’ve heard about a decision on a competition that does not incorporate physical strength.

The two women in the women's chess championship are ranked 300+ in the world.

I've heard they're trying to do the same thing for Poker.

Its a conservative viewpoint that I agree with

Women that used to be men should not be competing in women’s sports. There is an unfair advantage. I don’t care how much they explain it. It’s still doesn’t make sense to me.

I would actually be for competitions were trans. People could compete against other trans. At least that would be a level playing field

this isn’t about trying to drive them back into the closet come out into the light, but let’s do this sensibly

I didn't even know their were separate men and women leagues.  Seems odd since it's a cognitive game that requires no physical requirements except sitting in a chair and having a functioning arm.  I'm guessing it's because, like poker, there's just so many more men that are interested in it and play while their wives fetch them a sandwich or beverage.

They need to stop comparing average men vs average women and see if there is an unfair advantage among the extreme elites.

That's a good point as men and women have the same average IQ's but but men have a higher variance(more geniuses and morons).  There's probably an evolutionary component where there's a greater need for visual-spatial reasoning in males.  Still though, I'd think there'd have to be an exception or two to the rule and that there was a female(s) who could compete with the top male chess players.

It's a conservative viewpoint, but I'm not sure why it is?  Trans "women" are competing against and disadvantaging cis women and Dems are the party of women.  So you're favoring less than 1% of "women" over all of the rest of them.  It makes no sense at all.

First of all, I’m a independent admittedly, I am left-leaning, but I am still in independent

I don’t agree with the trans in sports thing that’s going on at all

I'm a right-leaning independent.  I just don't get how they can support a fraction of women against the majority and then purport to be for women.

If you look between the two parties, I think that the left totally supports women and their rights more than the right does, except in this instance, whenever you’re trying to be the party of inclusivity and tolerance This can get a little murky

There's no need for it to be.  You can support trans women but say they need to be in their own league if they want to compete.

The problem of men in women's sports is solved, everyone. Astrophysicist, author and professional thief of joy Neil deGrasse Tyson has the answer we've all been waiting for. What a relief.

Ummm, huh?

Yes, Neil. There are weight classes in many sports. Men's weight classes AND women's weight classes. That's because there are many, fundamental physiological differences between men and women. Difference that you can't change because of a social contagion.

Speaking of doing things 'that we've always done,' how about we do what we've always done and let men compete against men and women compete against women?

This writer isn't an astrophysicist, but that seems to make a lot more sense in an Occam's Razor sort of way.

Both Kisin and Foster pushed back against Tyson's ideas later in the interview, and he reiterated his position that we must change all of sports to accommodate a few men pretending to be women.

This is exactly what the end result is of Tyson's proposal. Sorry, women. It was nice to have you competing for a while and striving for your athletic dreams, but in Clown World, you're no longer welcome in sports.

They never realize how much they are degrading actual women to accommodate mental illness.

Or maybe they do realize it and just don't care.

Clearly the answer is to re-imagine all of the entire sports world to accommodate a fraction of a fraction of the population.

And you’re just an old fogey if you disagree.

Does that sound like a compelling argument to you for abolishing womens sports and repealing title 9?

it’s stupid right? This culture of everyone having to change the rational world to accommodate the few dysphoric is diametrically opposed to the purpose of civilization.

this faux progress agenda is a mission of the stupid and unproductive losers. And to ice the cake the politicians know these are the dumbest laziest ***** people on the planet and have them sold without question. The simplest most malleable subservient minded.

Huge loss for progressives.

The Alaska School Activities Association, complying with the August 31 decision by the Alaska Board of Education, has amended its bylaws to prohibit "transgender girls" (boys) from competing in girls' sports.

That completes the process; boys can no longer compete on girls' sports teams in Alaska.
