Thanks for explaining the eyeroll, appreciate the feedback.

I think what you are doing is fine, but just unrealistic to actually understand was it a positive or a negative.  Was he not involved or was his presence part of what made him not involved.

I think several times he makes the correct play for what his assignment is and people knock him because someone else didn’t do their job.

He is far from perfect, but him getting beat on zone beating passes where a player settles into the edge of his zone are not really a negative on him.  He did his job and even made the play as difficult as possible.

We saw last year in KC where they ran 2 zone beater routes to either side and then with time manipulate the LB one way to open the other.  He is following the QBs eyes and breaking just as he should.

We will see where everything falls, but I think based upon the defense and the gameplan he is on another Pro-Bowl pace and people will once again have to bend over backwards to explain why he is not worth it.

I've said it all along, that it's difficult to impossible to actually grade a player without knowing their assignment on any given play.  In week 6, had a poster who was really nasty, saying that I was copping out, and by limiting myself (i.e. not paying for the All-22), I was wasting their time.  Look at some of the posts here.  There are folks who are dug in that Edmunds completely blows.  I used to be one of them.  I started doing this to see if my thoughts of Edmunds held any water.  I can see both sides.  There are some great plays and there are some frustrating plays.  I do my best to quantify it as objectively as possible.  I'm getting flack from both the loverz and the haterz, almost equally, so I must be doing something right.

He had a bad first half, no doubt.

He did. I thought the first half was the worst he has played maybe all season. He straightened himself out second half but again it is that maddening inconsistency with Tremaine because when he is good he is very good and changes the way the whole D functions.

7 weeks into this season, I think Edmunds is playing better than last year for sure.  I'm happy for him and the team.  He is still not playing great - certainly not to the level of his draft position or the hype. He has made a few difference making plays but not many.   Agree the tackle on Gaskins was the highlight today.  But it was what Edmunds does best, run unblocked and make a solid hit on a guy before he can make a move.  A slower player doesn't get there fast enough and the RB can make a move to make him miss.  A smaller LB may not bring him down on first contact.   Edmunds combo of size and speed was on full display there.  A+ on that play.

this is what's maddening about Edmunds.  When he is unblocked, takes the correct lane he makes amazing plays.  On the other hand, he is often out of place, too easily blocked when blitzing, or missing tackles on TEs.  perhaps we need a new LB coach, or he needs to go to LB university (if it exists) over the offseason.

I can't recall a player who goes from so bad to so good in the same game ever.  And you don't know what your getting from play to play.  Totally bizarre and maddening.  One play, "what the heck Edmunds." Next, "Yes, there is that monster Edmunds!".

This is funny.

When nobody tries to stop an NFL player and if that player makes a good decision, then that player makes good plays. Shouldn't that be the expectation for any player who goes unblocked and makes the right read on they play?

No better example than on the Fish 3rd possession where he stuffs two running plays in a row for a 2 yard gain, then misses the tackle on the Gaskin circle route for 22 yards.

Who would be his replacement

This is important.

An Edmunds replacement will either cost a high draft pick or a decent paycheck. I am in the camp that would like to keep Edmunds, but I really dislike some of the valuations I have seen. We currently have the second highest paid LB corp in the league, and next year with the option we are the highest. We should have better production from them at the price, especially when you consider how many 2 LB sets we play.

Except this is exactly what and how good teams defend high powered offenses.  Lots of zone looks - protect your area and make a tackle.

He would be a mediocre LB playing in some systems, but in Buffalo he is a 2 time Pro-Bowl player - having another fine season that most likely ends in another Pro-Bowl invite and is the one of the few guys teams gameplan against on this defense.

2 of his markdowns in this game - were zone coverages - where Milano loses the player and Edmunds closes to make it a tight window throw - they were well timed throws, but both were on the outside coverage man letting the guy get to the dead area before entering Edmunds zone.

He also got marked down multiple times for running plays where he filled his hole and the running back cut back to a spot that was vacant.  The defense is very dependent on players doing their 1/11th and Edmunds on several cutbacks - had a hole to fill and he did his part.  The crashing DE or CB being out of position and allowing a lane does not mean that Edmunds was wrong.  If Edmunds had filled the hole to the outside - where the cutbacks went - then a hole would have been opened in the middle where he should have been.

There is also a ton of complaints about getting “tricked” by PA passing and that is exactly what PA is meant to do.  He has a run responsibility and a pass responsibility- just like most LBs and why is PA passing successful- even if a team can’t run - because the player has to take the run serious and move and in today’s quick pass NFL - 1 step is what opens up a lane.  It happens across the league to all LBs.

The worst part is people complain he gets no TFL, but then complain that he goes forward on PA.  He just is not going to win because even though he is the primary leader on a top ranked defense - he does not make every play perfectly.   It may blow some peoples mind, but I think the Bills are very happy with what Edmunds gives them and I expect he will be getting a contract a bit higher than Milano’s (as the market has gone up) and he will be here a while.

This ^^^^^ no way do the Bills let him walk in FA’cy
