Virginia Democratic Rep Gerry Connolly dead at 75

Congressman's family announces his peaceful passing at home surrounded by loved ones

By Anders Hagstrom

Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., has passed away following a bitter cancer battle, his family announced on Wednesday.

The lawmaker announced his initial diagnosis with esophageal cancer more than six months ago. He was 75 years old and had stepped back from his roles in Congress at the end of April.

"It is with immense sadness that we share that our devoted and loving father, husband, brother, friend, and public servant, Congressman Gerald E. Connolly, passed away peacefully at his home this morning surrounded by family," his family announced in a statement.

{snip}

Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-N.C., paused a House Rules Committee meeting for a moment of prayer upon learning of Connolly's death.

The longtime congressman's death comes amid a heated battle in Congress over President Donald Trump's "big, beautiful bill." His death means Democrats have one less vote with which to block the legislation.

Sara Jane Moore, Who Tried To Kill President
Ford, Dies In Franklin At 95

Nashville Banner, by Demetria Kalodimos & Steve Cavendish

Sara Jane Moore, the would-be assassin of President Gerald Ford, died Wednesday at a nursing facility in Franklin. She was 95. Moore’s death came two days after the 50th anniversary of her attempt to kill Ford outside the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco in 1975. Her actions followed Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme’s attempt to assassinate Ford just 17 days earlier in Sacramento. The two events were unconnected. Moore was sentenced to life in prison. She attempted to escape in 1979, but was captured after a few hours. She was released on parole in 2007.

I had no idea she was still alive.

I never understood her motivation. In some ways it is like what we're seeing today: a cultural moment, and a dangerous one.

She was kept for a while in the Federal women's facility in Dublin, CA. Heidi Fleiss was there at the same time. It was adjacent to an army reserve base (Camp Parks) that was just over a 100 ft ridge across the street from where I lived. I rode my bike past it once. Was not a max security facility as I could see the women in the yard and they had picnic tables and kid's play equipment for when the family visited. Next to that was the Alameda County Jail (Alameda Couty has Oakland in it). North of that is the Alameda Sheriff's bomb range   where Mythbusters would blow up stuff.

Hey Wacka, maybe I ran into you there. I visited that "camp" many times back when I had a federal job in the Bay Area. Really nice place to live, provided your allowed outside the gates.

Frankish, did you work with the type of inmates seen in the obviously true-to-life movie Caged Heat as a federale?  If so, were you ever offered, uh, I mean like was there ever a quid pro q….what I mean is were plea deals cut in the best  interest of all concerned parties?  Like, did  you find yourself behind on your work with any regularity?

And why was @Wacka why were you riding his bike outside the prison yard during outdoor time?  Were you tossing contraband over the fence?

I live such an uneventful life.

I lived in Dublin, CA for 15 years (1997-2012). The women's facility was inside the base grounds. It is a reserve base. The whole area was military  during WWII.  It was the Seabee's Pacific HQ. Where there  is now a big shopping area was a juvenile facility. It's where George Forman learned to box. And east of that where Scott Adams had his drawing studio and a restaurant was a large naval hospital.  Right after 9/11 all you could hear from over the hill was the soldiers practicing on the shooting range.

A lot of no dangerous female criminals. I don't recall many - actually any - bombshells of the sort the movies would have you believe are in the pen.

Pretty relaxed scene. Before that I had some really nasty men's California state prisons to visit. A whole different story.

Well this was a complete bust of a storyline.  Thanks for being honest, I guess.
