Alex Cora pushed every right button. I remember during ST that national, Boston and even NY beat writers being impressed with what he brought to the table. A stalked roster sure helps too lol. I don't know enough about the Brewers pitching staff to have a strong opinion, but one night later Counsell burned through his starter and best reliever with 4 innings left and down one run. Last night he had the stones to let a reliever hit with the bases loaded n the 5th, up 3. Today he went to a PH bottom 2nd 2 outs two men on, down 1. Greybeard Posted October 22, 2018 Share Posted October 22, 2018 When Mattingly coached the Dodgers, I used to say he would go through his bullpen trying to find that guy who was having an off day. He seemed to be successful at that. I realize that all the stats managers do that now but that is the risk. When you use 6 pitchers in a game, you are lucky if you can get through that without one of them being off. And in the playoffs, just not being able to throw strikes to the first guy you face qualifies as off. If Counsell's early use of Hader would have gotten them a win, he would be considered a genius but it didn't work out. Such is the defining line for genius's. It used to be that like 92 was pretty good and there were a few freaks around the league who get it up into the high 90s. But no more than 2 or 3 of those guys in the whole league during any little era of play. Now it's like every team has multiple guys who can hit high 90s. On a related note, there has to be a speed threshold where a human being simply can no longer hit the ball. I wonder how high that truly is; would make an interesting experiment with a pitching machine. Keep edging it up until the best hitters go 0 for 50 swings. I also wonder if humans beings (pitchers) will be able to ever hit that speed threshold! Probably not, but there are a lot of good MLB hitters who have real trouble hitting high 90s/100 mph balls for sure. If it ever got up to like 105/110? Might ruin the game. Go to the baseball area, its under "sportstalk\MLB" on this site and look up my thread on the fastball. I thought it was really interesting. The World Series game 7 mentality has crept into every playoff game to the point that they manage scared too often for my taste. Taken to an extreme if a starter opens the game with two off the plate the analytics will say the batter will get on so why not bring in a reliever to stop the bleeding? With that said, Counsell's pre-game plan to start the lefty on short rest and pull him after one batter was great. Didn't translate to a win, but what a smart move.
