It's also the "instinct" (for better and worse) when facing such intense (almost uncharted) hostility from the press in those months (remember how heated the rhetoric was back then, way more vitriolic than even now). That's not meant to be an excuse, just an explanation. Trump and his team have stepped on many rakes along the way.
