Today I Learned....PartII

Drones bearing piping hot burritos are about to start swooping down on the Australian countryside. At least, that's the plan for Google affiliate Project Wing, which on Tuesday announced new tests of its drone delivery service with two Australian businesses, a Mexican taqueria chain and a drugstore company.

TIL one of the most effective, but obviously least used, methods to deliver a message to a group of men is to put it on the ceiling above a urinal.

Men's room ettiquitte prohibits guys from looking side to side so our gaze is directed from urinal to ceiling. A sign directly above the urinal on the wall may be ignored but a sign on the ceiling seems so out of place that it draws your attention

Years ago we had an awesome men's room etiquette thread. I miss it.

Today you learned that the four-day Battle of Leyte Gulf kicked off on this day, 73 years ago, with the Battle of the Palawan Passage. USS Dace and Darter intercepted the Japanese Center Force, got off multiple contact reports to Third and Seventh Fleets and CINCPAC, and sunk IJN Maya and Atago (force flagship), and crippled Takao. Atago sank so quickly that the commander of Center Force - Admiral Takeo Kurita - didn't have time to be taken off by boat, and had to swim to a destroyer, which probably influenced the battle later on.

Yeah, but Michael Jackson is still a philanthropist and he's dead.

Today you learned:

Day two of the Battle of Leyte: as a denouement to the previous day's action, while pursuing the crippled Takao, Darter ran aground and had to be abandoned.

Most of the action took place in and around the Sibuyan sea. Japanese air attacks were beaten off, save for one lucky pilot who planted a bomb on the after flight deck of the USS Princeton. She later exploded, badly damaging the USS Birmingham who had come alongside to assist (in fact, the Birmingham had more casualties than the Princeton), and was later controversially scuttled on Admiral Halsey's orders - he was preparing to take the Third Fleet north to attack the Japanese carrier fleet, and insisted if Princeton could not accompany the fleet, she should be sunk.

The Japanese Center Force, transiting the Sibuyan Sea, was attacked by Third Fleet's carrier task groups. The cruiser IJN Myoko was badly damaged and forced to retire, but most of the strikes concentrated on the battleship IJN Musashi. Approximately 350 planes hit Musashi with more than 35 bombs and torpedoes, and he (Japanese ships were referred to as male, not as "she" in Western navies) sank largely to a design trade-off where compartmentalization forward of A turret was insufficient, so counter-flooded to counteract the list from torpedo hits reduced the reserve buoyancy to a critical degree. The ship was so tough, though, that for three hours Musashi was underway with her bow submerged.

These attacks, and the attacks of the day before, unnerved Kurita enough that he reversed course to open some space between him and the Third Fleet...leading Halsey to believe the Center Force was retreating, and setting up the next day's remarkable events...

Capable of being airborne for a week with in-flight refueling.

This might be something for you all to learn regarding all of the September birthdays

All of them are products of Christmas parties and New Years Eve celebrations.

As to the October birthdays - your parents were slow to the punch or were snowed in for a week.

Fox is a cheap network to the point where they don't even know when they're crossing into just plain bad. I worked for them once upon a time. Just take a look at any Super Bowl they've done- they STILL have not figured out it's worth spending a few extra bucks to balance the cameras(color balance) on the MOST WATCHED GD TELEVISION SHOW ON THE GD PLANET! This is what happens when the morons are in charge.
