Compensatory Draft Picks have been Announced

Recommended Posts

No, he gave away two fourth round picks (this year's and last year's) for the chance to move up 8 slots in round 2 to pick an ILB who likely would have been available anyway. He traded all that for just a chance to move up? gutsy move by doug, good thing it paid off and we got to actually move up. Every pre draft rankings i seen had ragland in the top 30 and many mocks had the bills taking him at 19 so maybe he traded up to get first round talent that dropped. There was a chance he could have still been there but no guarantees

Given how fantastic this draft supposedly is, Cleveland has played this right. Podesta is way smarter than many NFL GMs.

Bill Belichick begs to differ.

Time will tell on Podesta. He might be smart at tearing down a team and acquiring draft choices, but he'd better have put together a good scouting staff and the rubber hasn't hit the road yet because he has to translate the picks into a good team.

But are they winning because of these extra picks, or are they getting these extra picks because of the way the system is set up by giving the picks to teams that lose good players, which is typically what happens to good teams. They are good because they have good players and becAuse of the cap you can't keep them all...

Bad teams have to do whatever they can to get better so they have to spend more and try to sign the better players in FA

Smart teams will usually not sign FA's who leave teams, but will sign players after they are cut by other teams. That is one way to load up on compensatory draft picks after your own FA's leave. In order to make this work though, your team can't be a perennial doormat with a proven chump for a GM like Lil Doug, or the good cut FA's will sign elsewhere. That's why it would've been best for Pegs to clean house Day 1.

That has broadly been Whaley's strategy. The reason we didn't get a compensatory pick this last year is because we didn't really lose any starting level FAs beyond Nigel Bradham. We were technically qualified for a 7th round comp pick but we were too low on the priority list and they only give out 32 so we missed out by a couple of spots.

The big FAs we had last year were Glenn and Incognito who we kept.
