Jumping The Gun

This is my first post on the Stadium Wall, so please bare with me.

Does anyone think, with just after 2 weeks into the season, we as fans may be jumping the gun on things? I mean, I know what's reality and what's fantasy. And I'm a realist more than anyone know.

I honestly think, we're seriously looking at a 1-8 record going into the bye week. We have Arizona coming in next week. Arizona's offense is way better than the Jets offense.

After that, on the road at New England, on the road at the Rams (our only win, maybe), at home for San Francisco, on the road at Miami, at home for New England and finish on the road at Seattle before the bye week (I will be going to that game considering I live in the Pacific Northwest).

I'm not trying to be a hypocrite. I'm not suggesting one thing, then suggesting another. I'm simply saying, if we can pull it together, we can definitely be at .500 or maybe even better by the bye week. But, history has proven to support the reality. But, we can't be so quick to look for instant and immediate gratification. I mean, I feel like, if we do go into the bye week at 1-8, Rex may be unemployed before we come back off of the bye week. And I'll be sitting here, thinking 'Wow! Less than 20 months on the job and he's already fired. So, any outside coach looking in, is thinking to themselves 'We only have less than 20 months to turn a long time losing franchise into a winning franchise or we'll be fired. What incentive does the Buffalo Bills offer me for me to come coach there?'

It's something we need to think about. Because if we're always so quick to jump the gun, then we're going to continue getting crap coaches who don't care and will be fired or quit in less than 2 years. Then, we start all over. So, do we want to continue on this trend? Or do we want to develop some type of longevity and create consistency so we can have a winning franchise? Think about it. Would you want to work for an employer who consistently has an extremely high turnover rate? Or do you want to work for an employer who has a low turnover rate? Think about it. Me, personally, I would want to work for an employer who has a low turnover rate.

Some reasons why a coach wouldn't think "wow only 20 months"

1. The team has regressed under Rex. The Bills were on the cusp of making the playoffs before the old coach resigned.

2. Your D went from top 4 to bottom 3rd of the league.

3. Team has become undisciplined. They take stupid stupid penalties

4. Your O line has improved and if you get a young QB from college and say pick up a Bradford (for a year) the O problems could be fixed a bit.

Those are off the top of my head.... So Rex brought his firing on himself.

Also the Bills could very well beat my Pats in week 4. No Brady still, no Nincovich, a patch work O line I'm sure still.. And one game does not make Jimmy G. A scary QB.

I have seen nothing so far to indicate this team can beat the Pats, even minus Tom-Terrific. Pats coaches >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Bills coaches.

#1 and #2 are obvious.

#3 the Bills have been undisciplined for the last 10 years. They were undisciplined under Marrone and under Gailey too.

#4 Bradford has stolen enough money from NFL teams I think. Forget Bradford.

I think from an emotional standpoint, "jumping the gun" would have been appropriate for a fan who said "After this crushing loss, I can't see us making the playoffs for the next 17 years." on January 9, 2000. The fact that it likely would have been accurate is beside the point.

I don't think it's jumping the gun on Rex at all. The team is undisciplined, the penalties are ridiculous and kill any momentum. He's also doing a poor job utilizing our talent. He inherited a top 5 defensive team, his first move was to get rid of the defensive coordinator and institute his defense, which did not fit our personnel at all. He brought Roman in, who wants to play power football with a highly paid sports car running back.

I thought the first series summed up Rex in a nutshell. Hughes sacked Fitz on 3rd and long, but a defensive holding penalty gave the Jets a first down. Rex challenged an ultimately meaningless catch/no catch (keep in mind, a coach has only 2 challenges, 3 if he's 2-0) to make it 3rd & 9 instead of 3rd & 4, but because Gilmore couldn't tackle we gave up the first down anyway.

A coach has to put his personnel in the best position to succeed, he needs to be able to manage the game, know the proper time to use his timeouts and challenges and get his team ready to play. In just 20 months, he's put both the offensive and defensive personnel in schemes that don't fit them, made major errors when it comes to challenges (the KC game first and foremost) and had the team come out flat several times. What more do people need to see?

If Pegula fires Rex and retains the rest of the front office, then yes, an outside coach would absolutely look at the Bills job in a very negative light.

In a clean house situation, this is a potentially attractive job. Wealthy owner, top 5 pick, probably a 2 year grace period before you are even considered on the hot seat.
