5-2: Cardale Jones Media Day

Whaley: Cardale Jones could 'be a franchise guy'

Out of all the non-injured players selected in last weekend's NFL draft, the biggest wild card might be quarterback Cardale Jones.

Jones has a massive arm, athleticism and NFL size. There are also major question marks about his accuracy and decision making. Jones' lack of experience makes him a mostly unknown commodity at the most important position in sports.

The Buffalo Bills selected Jones in the fourth round on Saturday. He'll spend his first season behind Tyrod Taylor and competing with EJ Manuel for practice snaps. General manager Doug Whaley loves Jones' upside.

Who is JT?

CBF

Cardale was 2nd string all the way through spring and fall camp in 2014 when Braxton got hurt 10 days before the season started. JT Barrett "jumped him" and was named the starter instead of Cardale. Many felt this waas because urban trusted JT more, and he was recruited to run his offense whereas Cardale was inherited from Tressel and wasn't a fit. Cardale took over for JT the last game of the year when Barrett got hurt. They competed for the starting job going into fall camp in 2015 and Cardale won it. JT was named the starter over Cardale halfway through the season after taking over in red zone situations a few weeks earlier. Cardale also just isn't JT in terms of being a gym rat, Tebow-type (we now know he isn't quite Tebow, more on that later).

Eventually the red zone became the whole field. The week he was named the FT starter, JT was cited for an OVI and Cardale was the one who picked him up. Cardale started the following week when JT was suspended. He played well. JT finished up the season. He runs Urban's offense better (often flawlessly) but he's not a better QB.

They are great friends. It was a unique situation that had a lot of ups and downs. This is a good read on how the QB situation going into 2015 was, in many ways, mishandled. Some out of the coaching staff's control, as his OC/QB coach left to take a HC job and his replacement struggled.

Was an impressive interview. It will be interesting to see him develop in a pro set offense.

He comes across as articulate and intelligent. Love the back-and-forth about the ripped shirt at the start of the interview: "it's cool for you to send me a shirt now, it's no longer an NCAA violation" "my son goes to Michigan State, it will be a Michigan State shirt, sorry about that" "It's OK, I'll just rip it up too"

He sounds like he has his head on straight

Edit: I like this quote from this article in the Cleveland papers:

By the way, no draft day party, Jones said.

"You have a party to celebrate, I mean, what?" Jones said. "I'm just getting my foot in the door. I'll party after a long-term contract or something."

Agreed. Surprisingly so.

More than that, he comes across like a big teddy bear and a good kid.

I love how Troy Smith slaps skin with Brutus Buckeye for some good luck mojo prior to his throw.

:lol::lol:

Regarding Cardale's throw: no one is going to criticize that guy, ever, with anything to do with arm strength. Now if we can get him reading NFL defenses, we're in business.

Gives one a bit more hope that he might thrive at the NFL level. Some of his tweets made him sound like a dope, to be honest, but these are clever responses.

I came away from the WGR interview pleasantly surprised at how much I liked Cardale. Prior to this the only off the field stuff I knew about him was that weird thing where some porn actress was trying to get him to transfer to FSU and I'll admit it gave me a negative impression of him without looking into it very much. I was pretty wrong about that, he seems like a good kid with a solid head on his shoulders, easy to root for him.

wasnt that Braxton Miller with the FSU thing?

Cardale's obsession is (or was) Ronda Rousey

Cardale Jones: "I'm a winner" (11:54)

Bills 4th round selection, QB Cardale Jones joined The John Murphy Show to recap his draft weekend, share his thoughts on the Bills depth at quarterback, and how his athletic skillset will translate to the NFL.

Jones: I went into the draft with a level head and was hoping for the right situation. Being drafted in Buffalo is the best situation

Jones: Coach Lee is a great guy, I think he has a way to connect with his players on a personal level.

Jones: Being called a pocket quarterback, people can say that, but my game is more suitable from the pocket.

Jones: 11-0 as a starting QB was helpful with the guys around me, coaches, teammates. It's not just what I've done but the players around me

Jones: Being benched was bittersweet, but I understood the bigger picture and just had to be ready for when my number was called.

Jones: I'll be in town for the rookie camp this weekend, hoping to establish a leadership role and show my work around the guys
