Who would you Draft in a GOP open convention?

Recommended Posts

If Trump doesn't win on the first ballot or comes within 50 or so to get him a second ballot win, I'm thinking Cruz probably gets it. But if it were to linger on to the 4th ballot and it seemed clear that neither Trump nor Cruz were going to get the delegates needed to secure the nomination, who would you like to see drafted?

I think I'd like to see Mitch Daniels. Has a phenomenal record, enacted a number of meaningful and successful reforms, well-respected, always wins and my guess is that he would absolutely destroy Hillary Clinton in a general election match up.

Mitch Daniels would be a great choice, but I would like to see Scott Walker. He's done a great job turning Wisconsin around financially and economically, and if he, as a Republican, can survive a union-driven gubernatorial recall in a state like WI, I truly like his chances against Hillary.

Naming names aside, at the very least, I would like to see a governor run, not a Senator.

Scott Walker was on my short list going into this year, successful reform minded governor. Knows how to get things done, so practically speaking I think he would be a good president, however he did show himself to be a not so great campaigner. Made a lot of gaffes this year, so he'd have to straighten that out.

That sounds like a long shot to me. I don't know much about him.

This is a good profile of Mitch.

Substantively speaking, as much as I thought Mitt would have been a really good president, but Mitch Daniels I would say may be the most qualified person to be president of the United States. Loads of experience through almost all levels of government and the private sector, wildly successful track record, he passed a number of meaningful reforms, ex head of OMB, was the president of some good think tanks.

I just don't get why he didn't run in 2012.

Romney is the only logical choice for a drafted candidate. If the GOP doesn't want outright open rebellion, and wants to actually remain a political party; when they go against the will of their base the had damn well better put forward someone whom has at least participated in the process and been nominated before.

I would draft a team to go up against the juggernaut Hillary. Carly, and Newt to debate her 2 on 1. Christie to do the town halls. Paul Ryan to speak on domestic policy. Condi Rice on foreign policy. Allen West on national security. Rubio to do the acceptance speech. Fred Smith (Fedex CEO) to go to the White House as President.

Sorry, but this year's carnival proves that voters prefer hot pockets that give them a full meal in 60 seconds. You'd figure that after 2008 & 2012 people would wise up to keep anyone without executive experience as far away from 1600 Penn as possible.

Mitch Daniels didn't run in the last election despite good credentials. Will be tough for him to get traction with the electorate since he's been under the radar for 4 years.

I think Romney is the safe default choice.

What's Mitch Daniels 40 time?

I hear Paul Ryan is a workout warrior so he might have a strong showing at The Combine

Kasich has the Ohio State pedigree

Chris Christie and Donald Trump could add some heft to the offensive line

Rubio shouldn't have declared as an underclassman

On a serious note, if it opens up to a third or fourth ballot look for Susana Martinez's name to surface

Jeb Bush was spotted at the airport with George Seifert.

As if anyone judges Presidents qualifications that way. But if they did they would look at the clown the GOP pushed into this nations highest office in 2000 and look at the disastrous results.

Anyway, Mitt, or anyone else, would be a fool to accept that nomination with Trump ready to stalk them to their political death. He would/will hammer the usurper of his nomination to the gates of hell and his poor, old supporters will listen to him

Mitch Daniels would be a great candidate, I'd pull for him. hes appears to be a pragmatic decision maker how would leave the foundation of the ACA is place and simplify the law to make I more palpable for Americans in general, since he has already implemented a tax subsidy scheme in Indiana. I could see him appealing to voters like myself, not hardline conservatives but people who feel Government is completely lost its way in terms of size and scope. I'd like to know more about his foreign policy and attitudes toward the war department.

I am somewhat warming to a Cruz general run, I really like his tax plan and do believe he is principled when it comes to governance. I'm not terribly religious so that gives me angst and a total and compete repeal of HCR would probably break it for me... I'm doing my best to not shut the door on the guy but the Healthcare issue is a big one for me.

I really don't care for Hillary Clinton, and while I appreciate the passing of the ACA, I still don't think Obama did much to improve the country from a reform standpoint... While I appreciate the Bern, a socialist platform just isnt in our blood and when the youngin supporting him get to about 40, they will realize it too.

Mitch Daniels upon Howard Zinn's death

This terrible anti-American academic has finally passed away...The obits and commentaries mentioned his book, ‘A People’s History of the United States,’ is the ‘textbook of choice in high schools and colleges around the country.’ It is a truly execrable, anti-factual piece of disinformation that misstates American history on every page. Can someone assure me that it is not in use anywhere in Indiana? If it is, how do we get rid of it before more young people are force-fed a totally false version of our history?[74]

That from his wiki page

So? It's an accurate statement. Zinn was a hack of the first order.

Paul Ryan but at this point, anybody but Trump and Cruz would be OK.

I don't see Romney unless the Republicans just want to keep the party together in a losing effort. They need to nominate someone who might win and that someone needs an ability to work the center on immigration, spending, entitlements.

That's exactly what they'll be doing: holding the party together, and playing the long game on Leftism while hoping Hillary will work with them the same way Bill did, rather than turning the brand over. It's Romney, with Ryan on his undercard.

Ranked:

1) Nikki Haley

2) Kelly Ayotte

3) Susan Collins

4) Mary Fallin

Haley would drive Clinton crazy. Scrappy debater & at 43 has already been Governor for 6 years.

wow. susan collins. yep. i'd take her over hillary. might even register R. no, let's not get carried away. she's bright and nearly fearless. has conviction and sincerity. alas, she'll never make the cut. the far right and other trumpsters would revolt.

as an aside, watching some late night shows on hulu. just heard cruz called the republican toilet plunger. cuz someone has to push the turd out.
