Good point.

This is lost on a lot of fans. it's one thing too "lose a step" and all the cliches thrown at the oldest back in the league.

Point is, name a back today better than picking up the blitz than Fred? i am certain there is not one on the Bills. maybe in the league.

His paltry 2,5 M salary had nothing to do with resigning Dareus. This is a huge mistake on Whaley's part one that TT at some point will wish Fred was back there if just for protection. IMO this revamped O-line is still evovling ata pace way too slow for some..............

Are there any teams that keep a running back in lineup just because they can pick up the blitz?

Practice and late in games up 20+ against nobodies is where you get those reps until you're competent. They would make a great trio with McCoy as the scatback, Williams as the bruiser, and Fred as the 3rd down specialist who can block and catch. I can't accept that it's preferable to have less ability in the field for the sake of giving Williams practice.

well, really, since you want williams on the field as the bruiser, you are scrapping boobie as the special teamer.

probably doesnt effect your point, but figured worth a mention.

Was thinking on Sunday how would I have reacted if Fred was on the 53 but not active like Brown? I don't think you can sit Special K for Fred, Dixon has his role in teams ....would we like to see 4 backs active and Fred only get snaps only on a handful of 3rd and long?

I just don't know that there is a right answer here.

I hate the Fred is gone, but seeing him inactive might be even worse and cause more problems

Wouldn't they be called Fullbacks?

Not going to engage in juvenile BS. fred's combined numbers from the LOS were what on the Bills the past years?

try again. First look them up.

Earlier this month, Astro had a pretty cool post on that included some stats for Freddie over past few seasons. Here is a link -> http://forums.twobillsdrive.com/topic/180538-astro-notes-for-preseason/?do=findComment&comment=3666815

In it you can clearly see that Freddie's productivity has been in a steady (sometimes steep) decline the past few seasons. Is it really worth it keeping someone because people are emotionally vested in him? Likely not.

Except that Freddy isn't a fullback and fullbacks typically play a much larger role beyond pass blocking.

You can't truly judge backs by their stats. The scheme, the quality of the blocking, the play-calling all factor in.

I once watched Willie Ellison run for 247 yards - the NFL record at the time. Most of you will say, "Who's Willie Ellison?" Good question. He was a mediocre back who played behind an OL that dominated that day.

My eyes tell me Fred can still still play. Apparently a SB winning coach agrees because Fred's #2 behind a Pro Bowler in Seattle.

But I get the bigger point. Was it wise to let Freddy go considering we had younger, cheaper backs we wanted to keep and still had to find a way to pay Marcel? Not totally sure - but it still upsets me to see Fred in a Seattle uni.
