Apparently there is a common problem with Windows 10 not being able to connect to the internet after the upgrade. I had to uninstall/reinstall my network/wifi card drivers to get it to work. Got a bit worried since It took me awhile to find the CD. There seems to be other connection problems that aren't as easy to fix... FYI, my computer now feels like a giant tablet. be warned. But there's always outliers...you apparently have the misfortune of being one of them. You're right about it feeling like a giant tablet, though. It's not unusable...it's just the weird little things, like when it tells you to "swipe left," and I think "I can't, I'm on a desktop PC. Windows 10 didn't like that they weren't identical so it killed one. Now I have to buy a converter to be able to use my old VGA monitor with the newer DVI/HDMI card. ....upgrades never seem to include old technology. update: What the hell is Cortana? I put it on a rather underpowered Windows 7 laptop, just to screw around. I'm not crazy about some of the choices they made (the settings in Edge are absurd). But I think it will be fine. I would still hold off for a few months, unless your current OS is screwed up. Actually, for most people, upgrading is usually a mistake, IMO. If your computer runs well, why screw with it? You know the OS, the software runs---why mess around? Windows 7 is supported until 2020 and Windows 8 a couple years more. Make your next computer Windows 10. Windows 10 was unstable at first...but at least it took me only two hours to get the settings dialed in (as opposed to the two years I spent fiddling with Windows 7). I have dual graphics cards, but no problems. Of course, one's just for number-crunching, and not for the displays, which might make a difference. I did have to update my driver for my ethernet adapter from the manufacturer and NOT the windows version. BTW you can strip down that "tablet" windows interface. I have fully customized the start menu and taskbar. Mine feels like the 2015 version of windows 95. There is no tablet feel to it at all. Windows 7 had become quite laggy on startup on my laptop that I got in 2010. I've kept it up to date and it's still nice enough to do everything I ask of it, so I figured why not. The 10 version wasn't stable for the first few days, but after an update it came to rights. I was fiddling around in settings and problem fixer and it detected an issue with my router / wifi receiver setting that was alternating the signal coming into the laptop that would always cut out live video after a couple of minutes. I watch Bills games on here and in addition to the on-field production the last 5 years, it had been really aggravating to see them line up at the LOS and then cut out. Should be better on both fronts this season! I also switched from Firefox to Google Chrome for a browser. I was reticent to switch at first because I've used FF for a long time, but Chrome is faster to start and has just as many or more extensions / add-ons. The game's developers promised a new version that would be ultra slick, and they went under development on it for a couple of years. About halfway through that they announced that their company had been acquired and the new version of the game would not be released for some time. The original game - Marathon was only available on the Macintosh platform. It was Microsoft who bought the startup gaming company. They used that game as their flagship product when they launched X-Box... yep, Halo is nothing more than the old Mac game Marathon in new skin. Now MS has a real Cortana, and it's looking over your shoulder at what you type and at what you see and do. It knows all, sees all. But you can trust it. Technology never fails. Once you do you need to log into Microsoft site and tell it to clear all your data like your Contacts which really does not do THAT much since it has already been copied to Microsoft's servers for analysis. People were bummed because Bungie had been such a Mac-centric organization, and then after being bought by Microsoft while creating Halo, they announced it would be released only for Xbox and PC, I believe. The advertising messages are annoying, but I'm learning to ignore it. I'm starting to use the option of opening programs under a windows 7 platform (which is nice), that fixed some compatibility issues with older programs. As far as Cortana recording my every keystroke, I wonder if they have databases on the types of porn people download...
