Airing October 8th will be a PBS Frontline episode called "League of Denial." I know all of us on the board have questioned new rules and calls meant to protect players. It seems appropriate to me for fans to open a dialogue about the issue and to look at whether our views change once we see the PBS Frontline report.

I will be interesting to see what they were able to dig up.

But whenever I see "Drawing on the forthcoming book" you have to be wary of them trying to hype the book and the facts be dammed.

Understand your point but not like they are breaking the story. If anything it is a bit surprising that other outlets have not picked up the story and dug a bit harder.

Because the 3 networks and espn have their hand in the pot with tv contracts.

I think any league serious about reducing injury would start by expanding game-day rosters, thus allowing for more rotations in and out of the game and less wear and tear. Not necessarily concussions, but other injuries.

Half of the players don't see the field now except for special treams. I don't see how a bigger roster would be an incentive for coaches not to put their best players on the field.

Football by it's nature is a violent sport. When it first started players were a lot smaller and did not have the training methods,. nutruition experts, and yes the drugs to make them into the beasts that play the game today. Hell, high schools now have all of that and are turning out very big strong and fast players. Unfortunately the brain hitting the skull happens more and more due to those other advances and there isn't anything, in my opinion, that can be done with equipment to prevent that.

pbs is the best network on tv for precisely this reason, imo. i suppose they're beholden to the federal gov't since they have historically paid some of the bills but not so much anymore. i'll be watching this one as i watch most "frontline" episodes. but it's not like the fans or the players don't realize that they're 21st century gladiators. The NYT ran a big piece on this recently in which they discussed how ESPN at the 11th hour pulled out of co-producing this, even though it's based on the reporting of two of their reporters. As per anonymous ESPN employees in the documentary/news group, this was because of pressure from the NFL on ESPN to not participate in something critical of the League on this issue. Way to put player safety first, guys.....

Yes, this is going to be the NFL's version of the tobacco industry scandal way back. It sounds as though they have suppressed information for decades and only started worrying about the safety issue in recent years, when the old timers started speaking out. Can't remember all the details so much now (I too played football! ), but HBO's "Inside Sports" did a pretty damning piece about this, about 5 years ago, when the noise on this issue started to get considerably louder.

I feel selfish, because I love football, and I confess, the toughness of it appeals to me...and I find myself bemoaning the "softness" of today's game from time to time, when I let my guard down. But I don't think there is much denying that horrible repercussions that come with the sport for so many. I would venture to guess that the ill effects of those head traumas last much longer with more guys (not to mention all the other types of injuries) than the "millions" that they make over their short careers.

Excellent post, as are many on this thread. With such huge economic, cultural and social interests in this country tied to football--including myself!!--- I doubt much will change anytime soon with the game. I can't imagine any changes that could seriously reduce these injuries and keep the same game, but there is no way football is going away anytime soon, head injuries or no head injuries.
