Nix missing the boat with LB talk?

Interested in reading Buddy Nix's thoughts about the teams draft needs on BB.com.

He talks about how important it is these days to have linebackers who can cover. That's

nice. But when you are 32nd in the league in run defense, you need linebackers who can:

1. Play the run.

2.Play the run.

3. Play the run.

Playing the pass is nice. The Bills need run-stuffers Buddy.

LB's have to be able to cover and stop the run. The days of 2 down guys who come off the field are essentially over, and it's obvious the Bills have a few of them like Kelvin Sheppard who are liabilities against the pass. It's nice for Nix to acknowledge this now, but the trend toward passing oriented offenses has been going on a few years now.

Regardless, the LB's struggled in run support, which is all the more indication that this is a part of the team sorely lacking. And that's before even contemplating a move to a 30 front.

I am trying to figure out when Sheppard was not a liability -- I guess when he was on the bench. He wasn't good against the pass or the Run. Time for him to be thinking "what can Brown do for you"

Buddy didn't miss the boat, heck he was on Noah's Ark I believe. They didn't have football then and it shows.

So because he said that you have to have linebackers who can cover, it means that he doesn't believe they have to be able to stop the run?

Maybe, just maybe, he knows that but thinks its more important to have LBs now that can also cover players, seeing as how typically LBs have always been guys that are supposed to be good at stopping the run. Nah, he must mean that LBs should only be able to cover and not stop the run

If you have LBs that can only stop the run and can't cover, teams will just beat you with the pass instead of beating you with the run............

Nowadays, you need QBs who can throw a ball (note: being able to take a snap is implied).

Yeah, but Buddy Nix would say "Nowadays you need a QB who can run and scramble" and we would get posts here about how Buddys missing the boat and how QBs need to be able to

1. Throw the Ball

2. Throw the ball

3. Throw the Ball

Word. Last year we had Barnett and Scott as nickel LBs. Barnett couldn't cover a lick. Scott couldn't stop the run to save his life. Barnett could barely stop the run and Scott could barely cover. We need 1 LB that's great in coverage and pretty good vs the run. We need another LB that is great vs the run while beings competant in coverage. We currently don't have any LBs that can do anything at all. Bradham is our only hope to become a decent LB. IMO, shepp is a backup. The only thing in see him do is occupy a blocker. I'd love to have Lbs that were great vs the run and pass but its unlikely that we can land 2 of them in one offseason. Considering pettines sceme, it would be nice to find a LB that can stop the run, pass and rush the passer. Dion Jordan....I hope he's the pick.
