Buffalo has a new ABA team for 2013? 716ers...

Recommended Posts

I was shocked to find out that Buffalo was getting an ABA team for 2013, because normally the subject would pop up somewhere, but it is real.

Their promotion so far, however, looks extremely amateurish and needs a real marketer (insert Russ Brandon joke here)... wow.

i love pro basketball...i hope this doesn't detract from the nbdl, but at the same time maybe it will keep some players here on us soil rather than forcing some to go overseas, although i doubt the aba money will even be close to the overseas teams...i look forward to this.

I do agree they could have come up with a better name..some off the wall/obscure reference to the buffalo region

They had a team in the PBL here in NH for two seasons. It was actually good ball, fun to watch. Too bad they had to play in high school gyms etc. Terry Pegula should buy an NBA D-league franchise for the FN Center and do it up right.

True story: A few years ago there was a Buffalo ABA team called the Silverbacks that played at Buff State. I had gone to one game the year before and enjoyed it (although there are some weird rules, like 4 -point plays based on defensive domination, etc.) Anyway, there was maybe 250 people in the crowd. The following year they ran a commercial saying they were giving away 5 Xbox360s at a game just before Christmas. I called up a buddy of mine and said, "I don't know if you care about the ABA, but they're giving away xbox360s and based on the crowd size from last year, we'd have about a 1 in 50 shot of winning one."

We went. Crowd size was what I estimated and I won the last xbox360 they gave away. I still have it (though it did have to get repaired from the red rings of death issue), but better yet I've got a great story to tell. (Also got Daryl Dawkin's autograph at that game - he was the coach of the opposition - he signed it "Chocolate Thunder.")
