As a finalist for the Nagurski Award as the nation's best defensive player, the junior has the resume to make himself available for the NFL draft. Mercilus lead the nation in sacks (14.5) and sacks per game (1.21). He also broke the Big Ten record with nine forced fumbles, one short of the NCAA record of 10. After we grab a star OG, (Dave DeCastro) I think DE/OLB should be the next order of business. Whitney Mercilus is, in simple terms, A LOAD. He wreaks havoc at the line of scrimmage, and violently strong-arms his way through blocks. His long arms "shrink-wrap" QB's in a way that makes them cough up the ball. It's uncanny. Having watched him play, I can attest to his awesomeness. At 4-3DE, he could be exactly what the doctor ordered. Wanny needs playmakers. Dareus was a great start, but if we're serious about fixing our defensive woes, we should continue by adding guys like Mercilus. We are pretty set at Guard and Decastro would be a great addition but the only major need on the O-line is LT and Riley Reiff and Johnathon Martin would be good options. Urbik proved to a valuable player at RG and C but he does not impress me as being tough and nasty. DeCastro is tough and nasty. Watching the way teams like the 49ers play shows that, if you want to win, you need players that are willing to brawl. I don't think Urbik is that player. Some players take time to mature and develop, lots of players have had only 1 great yr at the CFB level and go on to have a great career in the pro`s. Al Smith and JPP are to of the more recent players to be labeled with the 1yr wonders. Look what these 2 players have been able to do with there current teams, Whitney Mericulus is a Beast, 6-4 268 long arms very strong at the POA, has an array of moves from the bullrush to speed rush the man is an all round talent. I would love to see this guy line up next to Dareus and Williams and if Merriman can get healthy. Who knows we might end up in the top 10 in sacks next season... LET`s go Bills. (Run blocking, keeps legs moving,snags late blitzers.) Decastro is a high-character guy who works his @ss off. Nothing against Urbik, but our o-line's performance this year underscores our need for specialists. -I like Reiff, I really do, but this draft is loaded with decent tackles. Make it happen BUDDY!!! I like the Mericulus pick, but Merriman is lights out over, closed, no bulb in the fixture. Paying that guy to come back is basically the same waste of 100m that Ralph is demanding to improve the stadium. I watched some highlight reel stuff on him and he looks good, but if I had one criticism it would be shedding blocks, and he tends to get caught in the backfield quite abit. Stil, Barbie's probably right. -I mean, why would we invest in the best protection available for our future franchise QB? -And who in their right mind sets up their power running game for the next decade? Tim- I have to respectfully disagree, Upshaw is solid all around player. He does very well a containing the edge against the run, but from the highlights I've seen of him his pass rushing skillset is suspect at best. He gets pushed out way to much into the backfield ala Chris Kelsey. He's not explosive off the snap. Looks to slow to me. I can't really see the comparisions to Suggs other than his size. Mercilus is a better pass rushers by far. That's what the Bills need the most. With our DT's and a couple of tweaks in the LB core we can stop the run. We need to get some pass rush and in order to do that we need some pass rush speacialists ala Mercilus. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
