I don't care what "shape" the First Lady is......................I do care what poor shape her misguided "programs" are leaving our school systems in.

Michelle Obama’s Unsavory School Lunch Flop

by Michelle Malkin

The road to gastric hell is paved with first lady Michelle Obama’s Nanny State intentions. Don’t take my word for it. School kids in Los Angeles have blown the whistle on the east wing chef-in-chief’s healthy lunch diktats. Get your Pepto Bismol ready. The taste of government waste is indigestion-inducing.

According to a weekend report by the Los Angeles Times, the city’s “trailblazing introduction of healthful school lunches has been a flop.” In response to the public hectoring and financial inducement of Mrs. Obama’s federally subsidized anti-obesity campaign, the district dropped chicken nuggets, corn dogs and flavored milk from the menu for “beef jambalaya, vegetable curry, pad Thai, lentil and brown rice cutlets, and quinoa and black-eyed pea salads.”

Sounds delectable in theory. But in practice, the initiative has been what L.A. Unified’s food services director Dennis Barrett plainly concludes is a “disaster.” While the Obama administration has showered the nation’s second-largest school district with nutrition awards, thousands of students voted with their upset tummies and abandoned the program. A forbidden-food black market — stoked not just by students, but also by teachers — is now thriving. Moreover, “(p)rincipals report massive waste, with unopened milk cartons and uneaten entrees being thrown away.”

This despite a massive increase in spending on nutritional improvements — from $2 million to $20 million alone in the last five years on fresh produce.

This despite a nearly half-billion-dollar budget shortfall and 3,000 layoffs earlier this year.

Earlier this spring, L.A. school officials acknowledged that the sprawling district is left with a whopping 21,000 uneaten meals a day, in part because the federal school lunch program “sometimes requires more food to be served than a child wants to eat.” The leftovers will now be donated to nonprofit agencies. But after the recipients hear about students’ reports of moldy noodles, undercooked meat and hard rice, one wonders how much of the “free” food will go down the hatch — or down the drain. Ahhh, savor the flavor of one-size-fits-all mandates.

The heavy-handed approach is all wrong, of course, but whoever decided that corn dogs, processed chicken nuggets and sugary milk were decent nutrition in the first place is more culpable.

EDIT: Better yet - parents, send your kids to school with a couple of PB & J sandwiches and an apple. Maybe it's not quinoa and black eyed pea salad, but it gets the job done and it costs about $1.

When I was in elementary school 40 plus years ago we ate pizza, spaghetti, fried chicken, brownies etc. And after school we at all sorts of sugary drinks and sweets. And we were all skinny as toothpicks. Hmmmm, what was the difference? Oh that's right, we got exercise. And tons of it. Hey kids! Eat all the carbs and fatty foods you want. Get off your lazy asses and do something!

It's ok, the kids get gym class 3 days a week before sitting on a couch all day and watching TV. But running has probably been outlawed because it leads to the slower kids getting bullied.

And you can't exactly expect kids to exercise AFTER school. If kids play outside with friends, they might meet strange adults and die!

In Chicago, you cannot..............look for this to spread.

Chicago school bans homemade lunches, the latest in national food fight

The arrogance of the government schools is sort of incredible. They apparently believe it is their responsibility to make sure children eat what they consider to be healthy food. According to one principal:

Principal Elsa Carmona said her intention is to "protect students from their own unhealthful food choices".

Since when was it the job of the government schools to protect children from themselves? Since when was it their job to step in and prevent parents from determining what their kids eat for lunch? It's this sort of power that government should not have over students or anyone and yet most turn a blind eye when the government schools declare that they alone will determine what kids eat for lunch.

What's going on in Chicago does little more than set children up for a lifetime of servile dependency on the state.

Nutrition has to be learned and the palate trained or retrained - it's not an instantaneous transformation it takes time, the body naturally craves salt, sugar, and fat- which for 100,000 years helped us survive and only recently has the excesses threatened our health.

The same people who don't like this program are probably the same people who get bent out of shape when someone buys junk food with food stamps.

Parents of allergic children sue school districts these days to keep other kids from bringing peanut butter to school, lest their little ones get anaphylactic shock.

In my town's school district - they made the kids keep journals on fitness and do essays on athletics. Over 60% of the population is Chinese/Indian/Japanese and they all vie for AP and Honors classes. So, PT is out the window because their parents can't bear to have their kids be "average" in anything - even if they are uncoordinated, can't hit a baseball, or swim a lap of the pool.

"In fact, Michelle Obama and her fabulous physique are an ideal example for women -- and men -- of what an active, balanced, healthy lifestyle looks like. Posterior and all."

WTF? For real?

lol that's awesome.

I love Huffington Post's overreaction to a overheard personal phone call. What a bunch of douche bags.

Crap, in high school I ate 5 slices of the geaziest pizza on earth.... washed it down with Dr. Pepper... and was 6' 2" and 160 pounds... probably ate worse in Elementary school.... but the fact remains as kids, we moved around alot... I was never in the house watching TV or playing games....

People are fat because we don't expend calories... sure we do 30 minutes on a treadmill, but 23 1/2 hours of our days, most of us, are sitting on out fat asses...
