But there were HUGE red flags coming from the best of the best...Mike Mayock actually did a little segment on him the week leading up to the Draft where he stated Maybin was not worthy of a 1st Round Grade...On Draft Day, after the Bills picked him, Mayock said Maybin played at 230 at Penn St., and he did not know if Maybin could ever keep weight on in the NFL...He also said Maybin struggled vs. the Run in College, "so i know he's going struggle against the Run in the NFL...Is he only a one-down player?" So you're right...Draft Guides are not always the best place to look...Any idiot can write about the NFL Draft and sell rags with ratings when they have no clue...But a guy like Mayock could have REALLY helped The Bills over these years...REALLY, really helped... I stated misgivings repeatedly about Maybin before we took him. I don't like when we draft a player with zero videotape on him and the only video on Maybin that I was able to dig up befiore the 2009 Draft was his Rose Bowl "performance" against USC where he had one sack nullified by him being offsides, and a dozen plays where he attempted the outside speed rush only to be safely escorted way past the pocket. The other obvious flag on Maybin was the fact that he got the preponderance of his sacks in bunches against bad teams… and that he was essentially a one-year starter. He will take a year to adapt to a pro offense, but I see great things from him. That being said, we need pass rushing first and foremost. The issue with this years draft is that there aren't any standout pass rushers expected to be worthy of a top 15 pick. Upshaw is the top rated OLB and, as stated above, he is not a natural pass rusher. Luke Quechly of BC and Zach Brown of UNC are highly regarded, but better fit the mold of a mlb in a 4-3. If we return to the 4-3 under Wanny, then maybe that works, but that really goes against what Buddy has been trying to do over the last two drafts on D. It's not time for us to draft a QB high since we just signed Fitz to a big contract. Before we make any rash decissions reguarding Fitz let's get him some play makers at WR and see what he does first. Although I am a big fan of Ryan Tannehill (6-4, 222lbs) QB Texas A&M. His stock has dropped and I think he has what it takes to be a great QB in the NFL after sitting behind someone like Fitz for a couple of years. Plus Tannehill is a great athlete that can play WR if we needed him to. His stats for WR are in 2008 as a freshman REC 55 Yards 844 AVG 15.3 TD 5 and his sophomore year REC 46 Yards 609 AVG 13.2 TD 4 so as you can see he could be a valueable asset to our team and learn to play QB behind Fitz would be valuable. IMO. And we can probably get Tannehill with a third round pick, (if he is there in the third I think it is a no brainer. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

John from Riverside Posted November 27, 2011 Share Posted November 27, 2011 OK....this is going to be a very unpopular opinion but I came away from watching that video completely UNIMPRESSED with Upshaw - He was getting one on one blocking - He was not finishing when he got close to the QB - The interception happened because he got stoned by the tackle.....and then just happened to be in the right place at the right time - He was getting pushed around.....and unable to keep his balance once he got into the offensive backfield This guy has NOTHING on Von Miller......who was a holy terror as a pass rusher at the college level....Von was beating the the tackle on first step and relentless in going after the QB.....I dont see Upshaw being anywhere close to that level. If this is the best OLB that college has to offer us? Go with another position in the first....I am not following it as closely this year but I would much rather draft a pass rushing defensive end if a quality one is there.....a big cover corner.....or even a big physical wideout then draft someone who will not be a star at the NFL level..... If we go that way, they actually have the guys in Carrington, Kelsay and Edwards to play end as pass rush is not the emphasis. The ends in those defenses crash the inside shoulder of the tackle and "spill" every run to the outside and create pass rush from inside out. Might be OK. I still think Wanny and Gailey are up to something, having all kinds of guys (Carrington, etc) playing 4-3 def. end this year. I'm telling you, they are experimenting. Much better way to evaluate a player than the highlight clips on youtube. He had a great game and was disruptive all day. Save the highlight clips and watch Bama in their bowl game (maybe National Championship?) Also, if your plan is to wait on drafting an OLB until you find one like Miller, then the Bills will be waiting another 5-10 years. Miller was a #2 OVERALL pick and is playing like one. Played with Marcel Dareus. He can do it all, pass rush cover and play the run. Upshaw highlights Watch how rushes passer and picks off a pass for a TD. The Bills need play Makers. I know this is petty of me, but I have trouble conceptualizing a top NFL pass rusher named "Courtney". Bryce. Bruce. Bart. Clay. Cliff. Jared. Jason. Osi. Von. But Courtney? That gives me visions of a baton-twirling, gum-snapping, southern Majorette, not a major pass-rushing Force of Nature. On the other hand.....Rosie....
