Places to eat/drink/have fun in Kansas City

For BBQ, there are plenty. Gates and Arthur Bryant's are the traditional legends. To me, both still live up to their legendary status.

Gates has about 6 locations, I think Arthur Bryant has 3 now. One downtown, one by the NASCAR track, and I'm not sure of the 3rd. Most things at either are good, but try the burnt ends at Arthur Bryant's. You won't find them many other places.

If its steak, Plaza III on the Plaza might be the best but is expensive. The Hereford House has been around forever, its pretty good.

The Power and Light District and Westport are the big night spot areas, Power and Light centers on jazz, but really has all kinds.

If you're taking a woman, the Plaza is an upscale shopping area in the south end of the city, lots of fountains, Spanish American motif, carriage rides, that type of thing. There are a few casinos on the river too.

If you're flying in, I don't know about the cab or public transportation situation, rent a car, its about the same as Buffalo as far as getting around.

I'll echo CookieG and say it sounds like you're looking for the Power and Light district. There are a lot of places to choose from and all walkable. You can get some great food, or a casual sports bar right next to each other in an area with a nice sense of "place" if that makes sense.

Power and Light District

Other misc feedback: I agree with what the others have posted.

Public transportation is not very good, and cabs are not inexpensive here. It's a car culture and the city is pretty sperad out. I'd definitely recommend renting a car if you want to go anywhere besides from the airport to lodging (and of course to the game).

About a half mile north from P&L (at approx 5th and Main) is the City Market with a variety of shops, restaurants with outdoor seating, antique shops, and farmers / flea market. Both are fun places to spend some time and really feel like you're in KC.

There are a lot of great choices for BBQ. I love Oklahoma Joe's and Gates, but I bet there are 100 places to try around the city. If you go to City market I recommend Winslow's KC-Style City Market Barbecue if it's a nice day to sit outside. You may think I'm crazy now, but definitely order the fried green beans! Winslows is a simple inexpensive bar/BBQ joint with outdoor seating, tasty BBQ and cold beer, with a lot going on right around it.

Tailgating @ their stadium.

I don't mean to appear snide. In NFL lore, Chiefs tailgating ranks among the very best! Stop by any of the places previously recommended and get some food to go for the stadium. Wear your Red, White & Blue with honor!

Enjoy!

Arthur Bryants DESTROYS Gates. I would honestly take the Dinosaur over Gates- don't get me wrong, Gates is still good, but I love the Dinosaur. But Arthur Bryants- you can't get ribs like that ANYWHERE. I stayed in Westport and we went to Kelly's Friday and Saturday night. Absolutely perfect place to hang out with your buddies on a Bills road trip. If you want to go out and look at chicks, you're lookin at the Power and Light district.

I'm with you, I've eaten at both and Arthur Bryants is a MUST SEE and Stop. My wife and I always swing by and get either the pulled pork the baby backs. :worthy:

Oklahoma Joe's is the best BBQ in town I am in KC regularly on business and I do not miss a chance to go.

Is that the place that used to be or is still a gas station? I went to a place after a Chiefs/Broncos game a few years back and I think it might have been Oklahoma Joe's. It was some of the best BBQ I've ever eaten. I was so drunk though, didn't remember the name of the place or where it was at but I remembered the BBQ.

My uncle is a Buffalo expatriate living in Lawrence. Gates is pretty good, but I never got to try Arthur Bryants so I can't say. Wherever you go, try the Burnt Ends. Kansas is all about beef and burnt ends are the best part of the brisket. It has a higher fat content, so it takes longer to get really tender but it has that much more flavor.

If it's your first time to KC, you should go to Arthur Bryant's just because it's such a landmark. Speaking of BBQ, I went to Memphis for the first time a few month's ago and went to Rendevouz (another BBQ landmark). Some people don't like Memphis-style dry ribs but I thought they were damn good but the real winner at that place was the brisket. I almost liked it better than any brisket I've had in KC (including the Burnt Ends at Bryants) Love me some brisket.
