Direct TV Question

More than likely you'll just need some signal splitters and the cable. Be aware that if your run the line too far you can get signal loss. Radio Shack use to sell (when I use to work there a gazillion years ago) a distribution amp for TV's you want to check that out.

You split the signal after the DTV box. If you want to watch different channels on those TVs you'll need more DTV boxes. They make remove control extenders so you can control the boxes from far away.

That will NOT work. You can't use a signal splitter with satellite, you need a dedicated line coming off of a multiswitch. The reason is that there's two-way communication going on - the receiver talks to the multiswitch which talks to the LNB (arm) on the dish to figure out what to tune to. Check out the Radio Shack reviews on the splitter and you'll see what I mean:

There's a multiswitch built into the dish, so a line(s) directly from the dish will work. Otherwise you connect to a multiswitch in your house and can run an RG6QS line(s) from there. There's an old, but still mostly relevant doc here:

Running an extra HDMI cable works too - but make sure you buy a good one (NOT Monster!) from BlueJeansCable.com or Monoprice.

To those of you that would like to use your PS3 in multiple rooms all you have to do is get a splitter and a long HDMI wire. Make sure the splitter is the one that needs to be plugged in, otherwise this won't work. Send a hdmi wire from the PS3 to the input portion of the splitter and then two hdmi wires from the output to your TV's and walla, you can now use your PS3 on different TV's. The controllers for the PS3 work in any room so you won't have any problems. Before you try this make sure both of your TV's are set to the same setting, either 1080p or 1080i. They can't be different.

Okay, thanks guys for the insight. Much appreciated. I did not think it was going to be a problem but wanted to make sure. I have pretty big college opener party & I have been thinking about bringing it outside for awhile. I am going to bring the 3 tvs up from the basement & set them up around the patio(I have 3 different boxes for them). We get a keg & I just bought a nice deep fryer from Sears that I am going to fry up some wings & potato skins for that day. We get a keg that I could put right on my deck & we should be good to go weather permitting. Man I am getting excited just thinking about it. It is kind of sad but my 10 year wedding anniversary is next week & I have not put one ounce of thought into that but I can not stop thinking about the possibilities labor day weekend & the opening of college football.

Have you thought of a splitter? :w00t:

I was thinking to myself while I was cutting the lawn this weekend, for football season is there anyway I could run a line off my direct tv to bring the TV outside onto my outdoor patio to watch college football saturdays/nfl sundays on one of the nice fall days we have in WNY. I have a system setup in my grate room along with a sustem in my bedroom upstairs & 3 tvs down in my basement. I was thinking the tv setup that is closest to the Patio outside is the one in the 1st floor(grate room). Can I just go to radio shack or something & get extensions to run the lines outside & bring the box & the TV outside?

As long as you buy the splicer for the right type, the cheap regular cable splicer will not work, you have to get the one for the directv sat type and you will be fine

Hey Gordio,

I would take whatever Fezmid says as gospel when it comes to DTV. He is the local guru around here and he knows everything you need to know about DirecTV.

With that said, one thing to consider is dedicating a line from either your multiswitch, the one in the house or the one from the Dish itself and run it to your patio. Then all you have to do every weekend is grab your TV and receiver and set it up outside. I have done the same thing in the past and it works great. I bought a new house last year and had the DTV installer run a dedicated line to a permanent receiver and TV that I have on my patio. Of course, I live in Florida and can get away with it but it's a wonderful thing. I haven't watched a Bill's game indoors in about 4 years now and this past season, I was able to watch a majority of them from my pool which is awesome. Good luck with the setup and contact Fezmid if you run into problems.

Fezmid is correct. This is not the same as putting a splitter on your cable TV coax.

I dont think Gordio is trying to split the line. I think he's just trying to extend the cables an additional length so he can move his TV/receiver.

My question is, why move the receiver, when all you have to do is set your remote to RF mode and keep it indoors? You will save good money on running a dedicated line, a new TV and a new receiver. My way is cost effective. If he can get someone or if he himself can run his hdmi cable through his attic/basement to a spot of his choice that whole process will only cost $22 (if he runs the wire himself) or $75 if someone else runs it for him as opposed to no less than $1,200 for a dedicated setup with new TV and receiver.

Try Newegg.com

Actually, I have been spliting SD signals for 10 years to alternate TV's in other rooms. I am surprised to read here that I can do something like that for HD....did I read that right? I do have one great HD setup, but was discouraged from trying the splitting. Doable?

You cam split the signal, but keep in mind, if you change the channel on one tv the other tv will do the same.

That is exactly what I am trying to do. Looked at it last night & I think I could do it pretty easy. Although the one thing Flom suggested is interesting where I could just run an additional line out of the box outside. I may have to look into that.

Having a dedicated line shouldn't be that hard, as long as you aren't trying to do it 30 minutes before kickoff. Once it's there, all you have to do is move your stuff every weekend and you are set. I don't know your house and patio setup but if it's easier to run a line off an open spot on your LNB right out to the patio, I would suggest that.

FWIW, I just split the HDMI, less of a hassle so you dont have to move your box in and out. Here is what I bought:

splitter

I only needed a 25ft run of flat HDMI, you may need longer.

HDMI

Total cost was about $50.

Update, I went down in the basement over the weekend & to my surprise the direct tv guy must of left some extra cable because there was 2 cables(both about 25-30 feet) wrapped up in the back where the cable from the satelite comes in. So I went to Radio shack & bought a 2 way adaptor & took about 1 minute to hook it up & it worked great. Weather permitting I am going to bring the tvs out this upcoming sunday afternoon & enjoy watching a little baseball. I know the Mets/yanks play this weekend. Looking forward to it.

But if he has a SWiM8 or 16 or SWiM enabled dish you can split the signal and a dedicated line is NOT needed all the way back.

How do ya deal with the mosquitoes outside, I get bitten alive here in NW Raleigh just walking outside, last thing I want is to spray up to watch a football game

How many grates do you have in your 1st floor room now?

I'm happy to say I am back in the DTV family. They offered to give me the NFL Sunday Ticket for free with activation, so I jumped on it. If any of you guys is on the fence, I'd seriously consider signing up. The NFL Ticket is like a $350 value.

I can't wait to see the Bills every week again this Fall!

I know Direct TV gets bashed around here a little bit but they are so much better then Adelphia or the Dish. I am not sure about Fios since I do not think it is available in my area. If you like sports Direct TV is the only way to go.

So are you inviting her to watch baseball for your anniversary? :w00t:

No she hates baseball. We are going out to dinner Thursday night & then we are going to donate some money to the indians at the Casino.
