Back to the 4-3 ?

Not so sure that the Bills are thinking their QB position is settled. From everything I hear, GM Buddy Nix likes Cam Newton a great deal, and the Bills might very well be inclined to take him in the No. 3 slot. Now they also might be of the opinion they could wait to take him in the second round, and that might very well happen, too. But I think QB will be prominently on the Bills' radar. As for other positions, I agree wholeheartedly with you that they need to address their lines -- but especially the defensive line to address the full transition back to a 4-3 scheme that Dave Wannstedt will oversee. Somewhere along the line, they need to find a tight end as well.

Bowers should be the pick then as a 4-3 DE.

But ole Buddy said we're a 3-4 team? More subterfuge from OBD or their actual plans for defense. Perhaps they realize their best player, Williams, is a 4-3 3T or 1T and not a 3-4 NT. Makes a lot of sense now that they've signed Shawne Merriman to a decent sized contract with guarantees.

If this is true, the defense is a mess.

Listen to the radio interview yesterday and the bills.com interview yesterday with Wanny. You will get no such idea. In the bills.com they spoke nothing but 3-4. Even though Kyle Williams was our best defensive player last year, Troupe, Carrington, Edwards, Merriman, Moats, Davis are all pretty much 3-4 guys. When asked what he actually would doing on the team in the last question, Wanny listed "helping out on the defense" third. ;) He's going to be the assistant Head Coach and consult on every aspect of the team, he's not going to run the defense.

Just get some football players in here and let the scheme pick itself.

Williams is a stud, just let him do what he does best. Don't confine him to the scheme "you are the NG, take up two gaps" Let him penetrate like a 5 tech in a Wade Philips 34 or as a 4-3 DT. All this emphasis on scheme when we dont have the personell to run either is just stupid. There are hundreds of good players in this draft and a handful of stud FAs to be. Go get some damned players already.

More brilliance from Buddy

of course they're sticking with the 3-4

why else would they bring in a high paid defensive guy who has never coached a 3-4, let alone gone thru the more difficult task of converting a team from a 4-3 to a 3-4.

Green Bay wanted to switch to a 3-4 and went out and got one of the best 3-4 coaches in Dom Capers to install the 3-4 and then game plan and run the multiple looks and blitzes which make the 3-4 such a good defense.

Instead the Bills brought in an inexperienced LB coach who proved conclusively that 3 down linemen playing straight up will get the ball jammed down their throat. The 3-4 is pretty useless if the bells and whistles are not employed.

which is why hiring a 4-3 coach with no experience in the intricacies of the 3-4 is typical from the clown show at One Bills Drive. But he does know Chan - at least he's not 70 years old.

it'll probably remain a 4-3/3-4 hybrid that several successful teams employ, and which we employed to a certain extent last year...which means that players like Bowers shouldn't be dismissed from possible consideration.

+1 Chan has said that they will be a multiple front team.
