I think Buddy just said were're not gonna let this guy pull a Favre and that they've been more than reasonable.

Funny how the announcement comes just as it's clear he wants to come back.

"Take as much time as you need...to decide you're not coming back and collecting on that $8 million we ain't gonna pay you."

As proof of this:

Schobel told The Associated Press in a phone interview that he learned Monday morning he would have been released even if had reported to camp.

JW all over it:

They should hold his contract status and just keep him on the reserve list. That way he can't go through with his actual intentions of playing for the cowboys or texans.

Thats exactly what they are going to do.

BB.com is reporting that they are going to keep him on the reserve list until he decides to retire. If he decides to play, then they'll seek out a way to trade him.

They won't release him.

New regime, new scheme, and Schobel wants out. I think that's the sum of it. He probably wants to play for a team that has a better chance of winning over the next couple of years. Not surprising, but he could've went about it in a more professional manner considering the Bills have allowed him to be set for life financially.

He saw Peters and Clements force their way out of town. Precedent was set for him to do exactly what he is doing. He will wind up in Houston and whatever we get (if anything) won't be enough.

Yup. And amazingly, unlike other teams, you don't need to be a malcontent to force your way out - all you need to do is play well enough to earn top dollar.

AS may have been an effective player in the new scheme, but it looks like the Bills are looking for players that are commited to being part of what they are doing from the get-go. Schobel was obviously not giving them what they wanted and they did the right thing. Good for Buddy and Chan for sticking to their guns and setting the tone for their expectations. You don't want to show up and be ready like everyone else? Stay home and retire then...

Letting Schobel skate by would make Gailey a liar in the rest of the teams eyes. This sends a HUGE message. The RIGHT one!

Funny, he went about 'it' in the most professional manner he could, IMO. No hissy fits, no hold outs. He made it clear he wanted to play elsewhere, but didn't hold a gun to anyone's head.

Since he's under contract, his leverage is essentially nil. The Bills will decide whatever's best in terms of a trade or outright release.

Great. This reminds me of when Fred Smerlas wanted out of Buffalo in the mid 80's to go play for a "Conetnder". He left and never won anything after that, and The Bills began their reign of dominance in The AFC the very first season without him. If history can repeat itself then the Bills are on the verge of excellence once again!

Actually Smerlas got cut in favor of Jeff Wright. He has never forgiven Levy of the Bills for that.
