Beerball

Recommended Posts

Just returned from the hospital where my wife and I fortunate to have met the-ball-o-suds wife and one of his daughters. Mrs. BB said there have been many encouraging signs today but Beerball remains under heavy sedation. Turn the prayers on tonight and in the A.M. because they are going to try to take him out of sedation again in the morning. If he is responsive then he should be able to come off the ventilator.

Once he is out of the woods I will have to let him know that he needs for his daughter to take a paternity test. She is smart, very nice and an attractive young lady. No way could he have created her. :)

Seriously though, he has much to be thankful for. It is clear that his wife loves him very much and he has a great family. Well wishes and prayers continue.

Update

Saturday, January 30, 2010 6:07 PM, CST

Well, it's good news-bad news.

We had hoped that when the anesthesia was dialed down this morning that John would be responsive (able to follow simple commands) and calm. Although I saw him start to respond by turning toward my voice and opening his eyes, he wouldn't cooperate with the doctor doing the neuro check. No hand squeeze, no hold up two fingers. I told her he doesn't follow orders when he's well so huh, no surprise.

While being rolled to his side for "cleaning", he got really, really agitated by the trachea tube. How horrible it must be to be aware of it and have your hands restrained. He literally sat up in bed, tried to pull his arms out of the restraints, kicked his legs, and fought. His strength was impressive. Bad part is they had to dial up the anesthesia again and knock hom back out.

They've decided to let him rest until tomorrow morning and try it again. It's a Catch-22.....he's agitated about the tube but can't get it out until he's calm. Vitals continue to be good.

I really believe he not only loooked at me but KNEW it was me. I could see it in his eyes.

Random thoughts:

*Syracuse wins by 2 over pathetic Depaul? Dudn't look like #1 team to me. My guys need to play 40 minutes.

*I am advancing big-time in Facebook Mafia Wars since I need the distraction. I'll be level 300 by tomorrow.

*The ICU is so cold that I'm wearing John's ski parka in here

*The care team here is super excellent

*Diet Coke with lime and Diet Dr Pepper are the two best sodas going....unless you can get diet rootbeer.

*I gave in and had Liz bring me a few shots of Starbucks espresso :)

Thanks for all the prayers, good wishes, presents, and visits. We love you all.

I know there's a Dick Jauron joke in here somewhere, but I'll refrain.

More seriously, it sounds like he's fighting. Good sign.

Latest update from Roberta. They are dialing back the sedation again to see how John responds. Keep your fingers crossed and the prayers coming. Good to see Roberta is staying strong. It has to be extraordinarily hard on her.

Last night, we all ditched the hospital for dinner and trooped down to Hutchin's bar-b-que. John's brothers Peter and Paul along with Philip, Megan, and Liz joined me to tear up some high quality pulled pork, brisket, smoked turkey, sausage, ribs, and catfish.

What? I'm gonna take them to the Olive Garden? John would never forgive me.

We came back and visited for a cople of more hours. The staff here has been so kind about letting us sit and talk with John. He seems to respond to family voices.

The Niche brothers obtained a sticker (I believe from John's buddy Henry's daugher) and just HAD to attach it to John. It says "I act up". Bwahahahaha! Of course we took a picture.

They are dialing back the sedation right now. We will see if he thinks it's time to wake up and respond. Fingers crossed.

Latest Entry - MORE GOOD NEWS!!!

So far, so good. He is on very minimal sedation and although the breathing tube is still in, he's doing all the work of breathing on his own. He nodded his head a bit, wiggled toes when told to, squeezed hands. It is hilarious that he will do these things when a family member gets up in his face and asks but totally refuses when one of the doctors tries to get him to perform!

I think it's looking good for getting the the trachea tube out. Doctor Thompson, the attending physician says it "seems a reasonable step". We are waiting for the pulmonary specialist Doctor Rahman to give the go-head.

I don't know if I metioned it but the last coherent thing I remember John saying Tuesday night was, "I think I need Doctor House". He's addicted to the medical TV shows "House" and "Bones". Babe.....you have no idea. We feel like we've been living an episode.

WOOOOHOOOOO!!!

Best news ever! The tube is out! They had us all leave the room to do it and as I was saying goodbye, he gave me the John Niche smirk and WINKED at me. For the first time I just burst into tears.

This is really great news. All y'all....the prayers are working. Keep 'em coming!

Finally this whole being nice to him looks to have a happy ending. :censored:
