Re Byrd:

"I try not to tell him too much because I might screw him up," Fewell said with a laugh. "That's the best coaching I can give."

Keep DJ away from him too please Perry

Great. But what about his number 1 pick, Aaron Maybin? Why on earth doesn't Perry let that kid play more so he can use his natural talent to make plays, too??? Go ahead and flame this post with your "Maybin sucks", "Maybins' a bust", "Why didn't the Bills draft Orakpo" takes, you're all crazy....it is way too soon to write this kid off.

If Fewell decided from day one to make Maybin his first DE off the bench, instead of slow, plodding sackless Ryan Denny, the kid would have made plenty of plays by now. And if Fewell and his ego will allow Maybin more playing time these next 8 games, I guarantee you he will compile sacks and make plays behind or at the line of scrimmage.

Quite a double standard Fewell has between his two top rookies this season. Of course Byrd looks like a very special talent with an amazing nose for the football, and a receivers' ability to catch it. But every rookie has his own time table in getting used to the speed and strength of the NFL. I am very impressed with Maybin's quickness off the ball. I think he too can be a special player. But Fewell needs to let him play and learn, just like he's letting Byrd play and learn.

Maybe Maybin is not there. When he is on the field he is rarely noticed. He has yet to make the most of the opportunities he has been given.

It is way too soon to right him off. One thing he has in his favor is our coaching staff. They haven't shown much ability to get the best 11 players on the field since the Arrival of Dicktitude. The list is long and not worth rehashing, but this is in Mabin's favor.

I am highly skeptical though and I've given my reasons many times so that's not worth rehashing either. I'm a fan so I hope he lives up to his draft status.

After watching the last decade of Bills drafting players, and giving fans the schpeel that "He's a guy we've been targeting for a long time / He's got great instincts / He's a big game player / He's this / He's that / etc etc etc" I must say that I am shocked, SHOCKED I tell you, with the play of Jairus Byrd.

The front office declared when they drafted him that he's a playmaker and a ball hawk, and he does in fact appear to be a playmaker and a ball hawk. AMAZING!!! The boys may have pegged one correctly!!!

I don't know. Honestly I believe the ONLY reason Byrd got on the field was due to injury. Had our starting safeties remained healthy he might not have seen much time at all. If Byrd doesn't come up with those interceptions in the first game or two he would have gone back to the bench. There is no doubt in my mind that this would have been the case. FORTUNATELY he has played lights out and intercepted everything in his zip code. It was a perfect storm that got this guy off the bench. A good deal of luck and a HELL of a lot more performance.

I don't know if Maybin could have stepped up like this but in my opinion they should be getting him more reps period!!! I don't understand how teams can take rookies at the most important position on the team, QB, and thrust them into a starting role but can't trust a rookie DE??? RIDICULOUS!!!

Personally I feel that a player's development is more greatly affected by hours on the "field" not hours with the "team". Getting this guy reps in live game situations is the only way to develop the "project". Why do you draft a project player and then not work on finishing the project and realizing his potential ASAP?

You MIGHT be right about Maybin, but I doubt it. He has had plenty of plays this year and all he has shown me is squat. I am hoping for something the rest of the season out of the kid but at DE he is like a fly on my windsheild. With all the LB injuries I would like to see him in place of Ellison, not Scott. You got to admit that he was a reach to begin with. He had 6 games in college, against inferior teams, where he put up some great numbers...that's it. He bounces of lineman like a bowling pin, has no counter moves only speed rush around the corner. Not Good Enough! Especially for the number 11 pick and guarenteed gazillion dollars!

We are all VERY familiar with Maybin's short comings as that is almost exclusively what people focus on. He doesn't have a counter move, he doesn't have a bull rush, he is only as big as Aaron Schobel...etc. He does have things you can't teach ...SPEED!!! The rest can be taught. You don't give up on a project 8 weeks into the season. That is just silly. Since it is widely known he was drafted as a project we really can't be too critical of the guy for a good 2 years. Of course during this time especially the second year he needs to show progress. We have gotten him so little time on the field this year how can we tell anything?

If it weren't for an incredible set of circumstances people would still be bitching about the Byrd pick!!!! Why did we need another DB? Why did we get Byrd when player xyz was still on the board? We wasted a 2nd round pick on the guy and he isn't contributing, he's a bust!!! Etc, etc, etc.

Byrd was thrust into a starting role because we literally had nobody else. Perhaps if the same happened to Maybin the kid could cut his teeth and figure out how to play at the next level when ridiculous speed alone isn't enough. Pressure can make diamonds or dust. We'll never know which until the guy gets on the field for a significant amount of time.

Well, I tend to agree with the Bills on the Maybin thing. He is undersized for a DE, and was brought in as a luxury pass rush-type specialist. They don't see him as an every down player until he puts on some more size. Now, I see him as more of an pass rushing OLB in a 3-4 defense, but who am I?

Ultimately, I think that it is the Bills defensive scheme and their insistence on using a 4-3 that is holding back Maybin.

I would agree with all of that if he wasn't drafted 11th overall out of 200 something athletes. A "project" is something you draft on day 2, one of those "high character, hard working, great locker room" (aka-white) guys we hear about so often. A top 15 draft pick HAS to contribute immediately to any team.

How much faith do you have in a coaching staff that hasn't bred any marquise players, especially on the defensive side, in 4 years of "building?" Maybin might be good someday. But at the end of the day, you need your 1st round picks to contribute.

But hey, I'm sure he had a great week of practice.

I agree to a great degree but it's that same old situation again.

!!!You can't blame the guy for where he was drafted!!!!

Just because the Bills pulled the trigger on a development guy at #11 doesn't mean he is a bust at 8 weeks into his holdout rookie year or that he isn't 100% exactly what he came advertised as. A project player with great measurables. If he was drafted later in the first round by a team that already had a good pass rush he would be the promising rookie who is penciled in to be the eventual replacement for player "x". Instead because we got him where we did he is a bust because we need help and want contribution now.

EXACT same guy, just a different perception of him due to when and by who he was drafted.

I think Byrd earned his way into the team...and it so happened that little Donte was injured...to open up the spot in the starting line up and Byrd has grabbed it...

It is not Maybin's fault that Chris Kelsay has been playing so well at the other end position...Maybin's contract hold out has really hurt him this season....He should have been in the training camp and earning his way through the system a starting line up or even better playing time....Actually Fewell is doing the right thing by not confusing Maybin and moving him to the LB spot..
