  1. We all know the reason is because D.C. has a Democratic voting majority. Which is why when the issue is debated in Congress, the Republicans demand that additional districts be created in Utah so there is no change in the balance of power in Congress. If you're sincere, when Republicans are in the majority, they could cut off futher funding and let the programs die on the vine. But they know it would be political suicide to take away the largest entitlement programs from the elderly voters. So they talk the talk, but don't walk the walk. And if the Tea Party is sincere, they would advocate just such a policy from the candidates they support.
  2. It was an astroid that was blown up by nukes. That's why the world leaders were here last week, it was a cover to inform them all that the U.S. and Russia had a joint effort to blow it up. And the president's initiative to land on an astroid is really because there are more coming, and it will take landing on them to plant nukes to change their trajectory. The Mayans forsaw this occurring in 2012.
  3. I'd trade Lynch for BETTY White. At least she'd have a good attitude and be a positive influence.
  4. Although I disagreed with Reagan's philosophy and policies, he had a resume of writings and speeches where he laid out a detailed view of how gov't should work and handle particular issues. He thought about what he said, and didn't just read a script based on the views of his speechwriters. Palin is just a series of bumper sticker phrases with no thought given to the details. That may work with the Tea Party crowd, but I have confidence that she would wither under the scrutiny of a presidential election and the general public, who are busy living their lives and not paying attention to the details right now. Thus I hope she is the Republican nominee. But I expect the Republicans will come to their senses and select a more mainstream candidate.
  5. I was for health care before I was against it.
  6. She got her guiding principles from David Hannum (look it up). Be careful what you wish for. If she continues to garner the spotlight at the expense of other Republicans like Romney and Gingrich, she could very well end up as the Republican nominee in 2012. And that would be great (for Obama).
  7. 30 million people aren't getting free healthcare. They're going to have access to affordable healthcare insurance. And of course people who can't afford healthcare don't work hard to earn a living.
  8. And once again Mr Burns chances end before Blinky hits the floor.
  9. I wonder who the slaves thought the terrorists were.
  10. I head Lalime is playing, and Rivet and Hecht are sitting out; Mancari got called back up. The team usually plays bad in front of Lalime, and the Bruins are desperate, so I expect a Bruins win. It wouldn't surprise me if the Sabres lose their last 3 games (at Boston, at Ottawa, at New Jersey).
  11. It's thinking ahead and setting a precedent. By stating such, it takes away the justification for any non-nuclear power to acquire nuclear weapons. Which means that if they do try to acquire them, the U.S. has the high ground in world opinion to get tough sanctions against countries such as Iran or North Korea, or as a last resort to use conventional weapons to take out their processing facilities. Getting Russia and China to agree on sanctions is crucial for them to be effective. The first step is to improve relations with them. This is just one move in the chess game.
  12. “A nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought. And no matter how great the obstacles may seem, we must never stop our efforts to reduce the weapons of war. We must never stop at all until we see the day when nuclear arms have been banished from the face of this Earth.” - Ronald Reagan, 1984, in China. http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_...ays-gop-ii.html
  13. Glenn Beck is just Jerry Springer without the sex.......so far.
  14. What bothers me is that we have 41 senators and 216 members of the House that would find single payer rationed healthcare unacceptable. So, if 1/3 of them are too dumb to understand this and 1/3 ideologically don't believe in it then 1/3 of them are doing it for some other reason (greed, entrenchment, power, etc.) Now, my numbers could be way off and I'm sure they are, but it is a given that a minority of our congressmen are either dumb, far right, or have some nefarious reason for voting against this.
  15. And you need a history class. How convenient to forget that a large portion of the spending was done to prevent what most economists agree would have been an economic depression based on events that occurred before Obama became president. Unfortunately, Obama wasn't blessed with the previous administration leaving a surplus, or even a stable economy. He did what was needed.
  16. Oh sorry, I didn't realize that you can't handle getting your own arguments thrown back at you. I find the selective memory humorous.
  17. Probably a lot less than we had to borrow to pay for the increased deficits when the Republican majority voted for tax cuts while increasing spending, or to pay for the Iraq occupation which the Republican White House didn't even include in the annual budget.
  18. You're too late, the majority of voters, myself included, already "took our country back" when we elected Obama. I look forward to future elections where the Tea Party-supported candidates run on a platform of reopening the prescription drug "donut hole" and denying coverage for children with pre-existing conditions.

  20. The accuracy of the 2010 Census will determine the geographic distribution of a substantial proportion of federal assistance, particularly in the form of grants, over the coming decade. In FY2008, 215 federal domestic assistance programs used census-related data to guide the distribution of $446.7 billion, 31 percent of all federal assistance. Census-guided grants accounted for $419.8 billion, 75 percent of all federal grant funding. To illustrate the fiscal impact of decennial census accuracy, each additional person included in the Census 2000 resulted in an annual additional Medicaid reimbursement to most states of between several hundred and several thousand dollars, depending on the state. http://www.brookings.edu/reports/2010/0309...us_dollars.aspx In addition, the data is used to determine the number of delegates from each state in the House of Representatives.
  21. I'm glad to see that votes still matter, and when the majority of voters elected Obama and the Democratic majority, health care reform was one of the reasons. They did what they were hired to do. Congrats to Obama and Pelosi for providing the leadership to get it done.
  22. The same Ronald Reagan who famously argued that Medicare would mean the end of American freedom? No thanks.

  24. Some of you are so thick. I didn't equate it's importance to Civil Rights, I equated the opposition and arguments that it will ruin our country to the same arguments that were made in opposition to the Civil Rights Bill. Now go stock up your fruit cellar and load your muskets, cuz tomorrow the gov't is coming to get you! (Or so you've been told by the nutjobs)
  25. Dude, you need to chill. People said the same thing when the Civil Rights Bill was passed, that it was the end of the country. It did lose the south for the Democrats, but in the end it was the right thing to do. As is this bill. Don't let the good be the enemy of the perfect.
