Bills Top 9 War Room Picks for 1st Rd.
KOKBILLS replied to Owen's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Personally I think a gamble on greatness with Evans is the way to go...If the kid reaches his potential we've got the next Brandon Marshall or Alshon Jeffery...And our Offense just took a HUGE step forward...At worst I think he'll end up being a solid contributor...At this point I say why not...But I would much rather be able to trade down a couple spots and still land him...That would be ideal... -
Mock Draft - 3.0 Updated 3/16/14 (Major Changes) on PG. 4
KOKBILLS replied to H2o's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
In that last scenario he had Clinton Dix and Ebron going before Watkins...If Ha-Ha and Ebron go before Sammy Watkins that would be one of the biggest Draft surprises in recent memory...I would say the chances of that happening are less than 1%...But you never know... -
Sammy Watkins, worth trading up for? What cost?
KOKBILLS replied to MClem06's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm pretty much fundamentally against giving up Draft picks unless there is a QB on the other end...Just not my philosophy...The way the Draft plays out every year I think there is always examples of how you could better build a team by trading down and getting more picks rather than trading up and giving picks away...That's just my opinion...And as good as Watkins is I think this Draft is loaded, especially in the top 20 or so, with very good prospects... -

Best case scenario IMHO would see the Bills trade down, grab an extra 2nd round pick, and still end up with Evans, Ebron, or Lewan in the 1st... -

First off let me say I agree with you...I think the Bills will look WR before TE...And I think they probably should too...Especially if they believe Evans is a potential #1... But I'm in the middle of this argument because I like Ebron too...And I think that he would bring a very unique match-up problem for opposing Defenses to deal with...In actuality Ebron sits in the middle of a TE and a WR...He's more TE size wise at 6-4-250...But his game is more WR...He's about the same speed as Kelvin Benjamin, and a bunch of other big WR's...He's a move-TE that would seek out mismatches and exploit them...He's much more of a receiver than he is a complete TE...But he can block a bit, and has the overall athletic ability to get much better in that area...If the Bills went with Ebron it would signal to me their preference for exposing mismatches in the middle of the field with Safeties and LB's...If they go with Evans I think they're swinging for the fences and hoping for the next Brandon Marshall to emerge...So anyway...I think either is OK... Concerning the Ebron's TD deficiency most UNC followers I know (and I know a lot after living in Charlotte NC for 20 years...My brother-in-law and nephew are die-hard UNC fans) blame the QB inconsistency, the fact that UNC ran a spread Offense, and that teams paid a lot more attention to Ebron in the red zone...Which opened things up for others on the Tar Heels Offense...In other words, what he did at UNC in the red zone is not going to be what he does in the NFL red zone...If that makes any sense... -
Change in running philosophy that makes CJ expendable?
KOKBILLS replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm not saying this because I dislike CJ, though I'm admittedly not as high on him as some around here...Especially after I drafted him #1 overall in one of my FF leagues last year... Note to CJ...Don't worry buddy...Knowshon Moreno of all people bailed your ass out until I managed to trade for Adrian Peterson late in the year...Still finished 1st in my Division (and lost the Championship game) despite the fact that Spiller and that other bum Trent Richardson were my first two picks... But anyway... I see very little chance of CJ being in Buffalo past 2015 when his rookie deal runs out...I would not be at all surprised to see the Bills bring in their RB of the future in the 2015 Draft...There's really no need to address it this off season...Freddie is still playing at a high level, and Dixon will be used a bit as a grinder...But all in all I don't like CJ's chances past 2015 in Buffalo...Especially if Marrone is around...I don't think he fits the way Marrone/Hackett want to run the ball...Plus I don't think the Bills are going to want to pony up to keep him... -

Into the top 10? Not sure about that...It's awfully crowded up there... I'm also unsure about who is going to be the first Safety taken...Dix or Pryor...Both are very good prospects though...Pryor is a beast...Charles Davis said that he is hearing scouts are concerned about Dix's ability to cover man-to-man...Pryor did not play much man either...Nonetheless both are considered to be very, very good...I've read comparisons to Eric Berry and Earl Thomas...Which is crazy because those are two of the best safeties in the NFL... Just further proof of the crazy depth especially in the first round of this Draft... -
Re: With the 1st pick of the 2014 Draft...
KOKBILLS replied to JTO's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He's still the odds on favorite to go #1 IMHO...I think the Houston people in the know would back me up on it too...O'Brien likes him and is on record saying as much....The new Texans HC is also close with George O'Leary so he's going to get the complete scoop on the kid...O'Leary has been careful not to over-hype Bortles admitting he's going to need time, and he did say that Bortles does not compare to Andrew Luck at this point... "Blake has all the things you're looking for in a quarterback as far as size and mental capacity to handle a lot of things," O'Leary said . "But that first year is tough because those guys are moving a lot faster than the college guys. ... Blake is going to be fine-tuned to what he needs to get done in the pro ranks. He's a quick study and a quick learner." Then there's long time Houston reporter John McClain's quotes... "Each day I get asked multiple times: Who are Texans drafting? I tell them 1 of the 3 top QBs. Forget about any other position," "I believe the Texans will keep the top pick and take the highest-rated QB on their board. Too early to say who at this point. Lots of time left," "I'm still amazed to read and hear so many nationally predicting the Texans won't take a QB with their first-round pick. It'll be a QB!" Finally...Bortles line at Penn St. last year...20/27...288 yds...3 TD's...1 INT...A QBR of 95.9... At the end of the day I'll be surprised if Bortles does not go #1 overall...I'm not saying I think that's what the Texans should do necessarily...But I do think it's what they will do... -
Agreed... Just about every big board I respect has Hageman in the 25-35 area...I think he would be quite a steal at 41...I doubt he'll make it that far though...

Fair enough...I'm not all about Ebron or bust...Nothing like that...But I do feel he is unique...And I doubt very much there is another prospect like him in this Draft...I do agree there are other TE's that may be effective though... Stop!!!...I was so close!!!... -

There seems to be a bit debate about Evans, Ebron, or an OT...But it looks to me like just about everyone agrees it's going to be one of those three... Assuming Clowney, Robinson, Watkins, and Mack all go in the top 8...Are we close to agreeing that IF the Bills stay at #9 the pick will come down to Evans, Ebron, Matthews, or Lewan? Because even narrowing it down to that would be something... -

Graham barely played College football...One season at Miami and he had 17 receptions for 213 yds...The reason he was Drafted in the 3rd round was his incredible athletic ability (he did play all 4 years of B-Ball at Miami), and the fact that 5 of those 17 receptions went for TD's...Rest assured if Graham played as much as Ebron did in College he would have been a top 10 pick...And there will very likely be no Eric Ebron's obtained in any of the other rounds of this Draft...Like Graham he's a very unique talent... -

IF they Draft Evans...And that's a big if...He takes Hogan's Roster spot...But he would take a lot of TJ's PT...I think the only reason they hold on to TJ this year would be insurance in case Flash gets injured again...It gives the Bills a back-up burner... -

Ebron is NOT your typical TE...If he was I would agree with the quoted posts...If you're looking at Ebron like you view Chandler, or Moeaki, then you're not understanding why Ebron is being considered for the #9 pick... So consider this...In his Jr year alone Ebron had more yards than Moaki had in all his College years at Iowa combined... If you want to find comparisons to Ebron you have to look at guys like Vernon Davis, and if he reaches his potential even Jimmy Graham...If the Bills are looking to take Ebron at #9 they will be looking for a game-changing TE who will be a match-up nightmare for Defenses...Ebron has enough athletic ability to split out wide...He just happens to be 250 lbs with 4.5 speed...He can block too, and I think he'll continue to get better in that area... I'm leaning towards Mike Evans to the Bills...but I want them to come out of this 1st Round with either Evans or Ebron...Both are match-up weapons the Bills desperately need... -
I don't know how you pass Hageman in this scenario...IMHO he's clearly the highest rated player on that list...I very much doubt he would still be there at #41...If he is though it would seem to be a no-brainer...

Exactly...That's why I think the Draft is going to be all about helping EJ as much as they possibly can...Should be exciting!!! If they can run the ball more effectively, especially on early downs, that should take a little pressure off the QB...But man the spotlight is going to be shining squarely on #3 now...Hope he's up for it... -

Spikes is young...This is a "show me" deal...If Spikes plays really well he'll be re-up'd fast...They may Draft one anyway for insurance...But they'll be hoping Spikes is the man... -
With a lot of teams you may be right...But this is the Bills and they are dealing with a 14 year playoff drought and the fact that the team is based in WNY...They are the opposite of a preferred NFL destination, and they are going to have to overpay a little to get what they need...That's just the way it is right now...One playoff year will change that quickly...So I don't mind the strategy whatsoever...

So how does it all look now? Spikes, Dixon, Rivers, Graham, and Williams signed... Lost Byrd...Resigned Chandler... Carrington still in the wind... I think the Bills are a better team now then they were when they entered free agency...Of course I sat on the fence about Byrd all along...Loved the guy, but I stay suspicious that he's peaked, and that the PF could continue to be a problem...I remain unconvinced that he is a $9 million per year player...We'll see, and I wish him the best...But anyway...I think my doubts about Byrd help me get pretty excited about what they have done otherwise...I think those who feel Byrd should have been retained regardless will view the past few days very differently... -

Agreed... I'm really big on team building...not talent stockpiling...I think if you look at what the Seahawks and 49ers have done over the past few years it's all about building a team...1-53...Everyone with a role...Everyone pulling their weight and knowing how they fit in to the overall plan...I think Marrone/Whaley understand this...I like what I'm seeing...And I'm FAR from an apologist... -

Well...Maybe we're just getting over-analytics now, because PFF gave Rivers a +3.9 over the past two seasons vs the run... So... PFF also graded Spikes very well vs the run...So as a Bills fan, I'm going with PFF...
