There are 31 other franchises and 95 years of professional football to reference yet it somehow all comes back to this when QBs are discussed.

Seattle DL Michael Bennett calls out QBs for $, complaining
MDH replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It's not overpaying. It's the going rate for the position. Much like a Safety doesn't get the cash a DE gets, a DE doesn't get the cash a QB gets. Everybody on the team matters but it's putting your head in the sand to think that some positions aren't more important than others. -

Nobody said anything to the contrary. -
Based on what I've seen so far in pre-season (which is, admittedly, a small sample set) it appears his accuracy has greatly improved. I see him consistently hitting throws that he missed consistently in years past. The whole bit about "you can't improve accuracy" is a load of bunk. Once a QB gets comfortable with NFL defenses, with the offense he's running and gets his mechanics worked out (via loads of work in the offseason) accuracy improves. Almost every QB I've ever seen has a completion percentage that steadily increases in their first 4-5 years.

The problem is none of these coaches can see 5 years down the line as it's a win now business. So as much as I agree that EJ is a better long term solution than either TT or MC I just don't see coaches doing that because they fear unemployment. EJ also has the problem that he wasn't these coaches personal pick. So nobody is going to stick their neck out for him. But what you've stated is exactly why I'm in the "anybody but Cassel" bandwagon. I agree that EJ has a better toolset than TT but at least you get the potential for growth with both. We all know what we're getting with Cassel and it's nowhere near good enough. While it doesn't stop it, it does severely hinder it. It slows it to a glacial pace.

Tannehill is a difference maker simply because he plays QB. If given a choice who makes the bigger impact on a game: Tannehill vs. the worst starting QB in the league or Mario vs. the worst starting DE in the league. I'd say Tannehill is the more important player simply because of his position. That's why guys like Tannehill get paid big bucks. He might not be nearly as good as his craft as Mario but even an average QB has a huge impact on the game vs. what a team might have to deal with if they let him go. It's akin to the baseball stat WAR (wins above replacement.) Imagine the WAR numbers of even an average #1 pitcher if he got to pitch every single game. It would be much bigger than any star player at any other position. That's the QB. -
Bills #1 Overhyped Team For 2015? Nick Kostos Thinks So
MDH replied to H2o's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm normally in agreement with your POV Dean but not only was Rex not near the bottom of the league in 2013, I'd say he might have done the best coaching job of his career that year. Getting that Jets team to 8-8 was a fantastic job. My jaw drops open at anybody who thinks that was a poor job. As for last year I won't disagree that he did a poor job but I'd say that it's very tough to do a good job when you're a dead man walking the entire season. -
Dareus unhappy with Bills in contract talks (update:He's ok)

This pretty much sums it up. Which is a shame, because on his lucid days he is capable of writing pretty good articles. Unfortunately, those days are few and far between. -
B/R Report: Rex wants to start Tyrod, other coaches split
MDH replied to johnwalter's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yeah, I'm not getting into the whole "I don't believe you" thing. If he wants to share info, that's fine. I can decide for myself if it's believable. I just was curious at what point Roman allegedly said this. -

I don't want to go back and read this entire thread but my question about Roman wanting Cassel is when did he reveal this? Was it pre-camp or in the last week? -
8-22: Bills' Training Camp Practice - 10 AM to 12 PM

Why was he a veteran backup? If he "beat out" the rookie, he's the starter, no? -

MDH replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'd say the "booted out" comment is fairly accurate. Bridgewater stayed and anointed the starter and Cassel was moved. "Booted" might be a harsh way of phrasing it. The only thing that was wrong with the statement was "for a rookie." Cassel was moved out in favor of a 2nd year signal caller. Of course, I don't think that necessarily reflects poorly on Cassel as I think most teams in need of a long term solution at QB would let the young kid who has shown some promise get his work in. -
The Bills are going to do well, and the Patriots are not.
MDH replied to ThurmasThoman's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
We've all be hoping for the demise of the Patriots for over a decade. I remember when Charlie Weiss and Romeo Crennel left there were threads here that stated the Patriots would finally begin to return to the pack. The Pats will be good in-so-long as Brady remains a top tier QB. If he begins to slip this year then they might be .500. Otherwise they'll be competing for the East by year's end. -
You just defined "franchise QB" the way you wanted it defined for the poll, which was the point I was making. It's easier to give an opinion if one understands the question being asked. If you had asked, "what are the chances Tyrod plays like a QB in the top half of the league this year" my vote would have been very different.
-
I'm a little hesitant about Tyrod simply because he's never started an NFL game where he saw anything but a vanilla D and the D schemed for him. That doesn't mean he couldn't/wouldn't very well be successful but I'm not sure I'd go all in on him. Of course, they don't have to, they have a fallback in Cassel (or EJ) if he struggles.

Rapid Reaction - 10 Observations About Tonight’s Game
MDH replied to ChevyVanMiller's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
We got to see this first hand with the Joe. B. tweet in the first pre-season game how he thought that EJ TD pass could have/should have been intercepted. In practice there is no way to dispute this. Yet we all got to watch the play and were able to say, "WTF is he talking about?" If he questions that play, how accurate are any of his assessments? -
Bills have too much talent to keep a guy who only does KR/PR. Particularly when they have a lot of other guys who are also very good returners.
-
EJ deserves time on the field with first team offense.
MDH replied to gsurdam's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm not sure how much football you watch but a pass rush is the surefire way to throw ANY QB off their game. It's how you rattle Rogers, Manning, Brady, etc. Give those guys time to throw and they're deadly. Get in their face and they are human. No QB will play well with DL consistently in their face. I'm not sure why you're attempting to hold EJ to this level when HoF guys can't get it done with that type of blocking. I was actually pleased by what I saw EJ do in those situations. He actually kept his eyes down field and was still looking to make plays despite chaos around him. Yet, despite this EJ led the O to two 10+ play drives in his four drives. Yeah, that's right, two 10+ play drives which ate clock and produced first downs. So you might want to rethink the "sucked" part. If that is a drive that "sucked" then TT only had one solid drive all night. -
I'm not sure who I favor between EJ and TT right now but this made me chuckle. So far in this QB derby EJ has led the team to TDs in the scrimmage and each of the pre-season games. TT has led the team to TDs in one pre-season game. Cassel has led the team to no TDs (with one fewer game.) EJ has performed well when the lights come on. Results, not excuses?
-
It must be the pre-season, when hope reigns eternal. 73% of the people who voted think there is more than a 25% chance that he becomes a franchise QB in 2015. A third of you think it's greater than a 50% chance!? A 6th round pick with 0 starts and fewer than 40 attempts in his 4 year career because he's played well in practice and two pre-season games. Perhaps what's needed is for people to define what they consider a "franchise QB." Because I'm not sure everybody has the same definition. I define it as a guy whom you feel confident/comfortable QBing your team for the next 6-8 years. A position that requires no more high draft picks (or big FA signings) because the starter is set in stone. We think TT can give that to us with his performance this year? And just for the record, I voted 0% in both this and the EJ threads.
-
Did RG3's rookie season make him a "franchise QB?" To be a franchise guy you have to do it for more than a single season. So no, he can't be a franchise guy this year alone.

Most Surprising & Most Disappointing player this offseason
MDH replied to Kirby Jackson's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He's been accurate and on point with most of his passes. The majority of his incompletions have come from drops. What do you expect from him exactly? -
EJ deserves time on the field with first team offense.
MDH replied to gsurdam's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The WRs out there did a good job for him. Unfortunately the OL and RBs were pathetic. I don't really blame the RBs though. It's tough to do much when you're on the team for just two weeks (Hill) and just two days (Seale). I'm not sure I've ever seen a guy play - even in the pre-season - when he's not had a single practice. I read a quote from Seale that said he hadn't even put on pads since his Jan 17th bowl game. That's a guy you're counting on to pick up the blitz or know the offense at all? -

Doesn't surprise me that EJ is your disappointment. After saying he'd be off the roster before training camp it must be awfully disappointing to see him go out and play well in back to back games. -
Wawrow Article Indicates EJ Sees Wall's Writing
MDH replied to The Big Cat's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
They had a 12 play drive there that netted two first downs. They lost yards on a rush and a sack is how they got pushed back to the 19.
