Wow, this is some article written by a former agent

Do an analysis of how many D-I players get to play a single down in the NFL. It's a TINY percentage. Yes, I realize the kids have pie-in-the-sky hopes and expectations, but the reality is most of them are NOT going to play in the NFL. They'd be better off getting a good education at a D-II school (where they can also probably get a full ride) and making something of themselves there if in fact they can't get a proper degree from a D-I school. But the fact still remains that college football players CAN get a degree from a D-I school AND play football if they want. Yes, it might be more difficult. But like I said, I know two guys from the U of MN who were in my physics classes and in the computer labs quite a bit. -

That's BS. There were a couple of guys from the Gophers football team in my physics classes at the U of Minnesota. I don't know if they were on a scholarship or not, but they were obviously studying and on the football team. (I'm not questioning what happened, I'm saying that it's bogus for anyone to say that to the students). Is it harder to do football and study for a "real" degree? Yes. Is it a choice the kids make if they decide to party and screw around instead of study? Yes. EDIT: Interesting link on Robert Smith. Kind of echos what you said, although Smith just quit and went into the NFL, then quit the NFL to go back to school. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1140635/index.htm -
Based on any intelligence at all, he shouldn't be on the list. You don't fire a coach after one season, no matter what he does (unless he doesn't study the playbook... ).

And the argument that these kids aren't real students, aren't really studying, etc, is lame -- yeah, many of them may be CHOOSING not to study. But that's a choice. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make 'em drink. -

Okay nerds, looks like my Yahoo account might have been hacked

Maybe it's the people you are calling nerds getting revenge...? -
Thanks! it's a lot of fun so far, although it'll be better once I actually finish my class this semester and have more time to dedicate to it. It's kinda weird to see how popular the Google car article is doing. At the top of the article, it shows you how many times people have tweeted or put the article on Facebook -- about 40 people have tweeted it and over 80 have put it on their FB page. Kinda neat, knowing that people liked the article and topic so much that they want to share it with their friends. As for TSO - I haven't received my tickets yet, but my show isn't until December... Can't wait though!

True - but anyone can register. And some registered folks are the ones that we've had to moderate in the past... IRC is so much better than a web chat room.. In addition to the above, it also allows private chats between members.
-
It's better in a number of ways. It's moderated, so if someone jumps in just to harass, we can get rid of them. It's IRC, which is easier to manage than a website - especially if you use an actual IRC client instead of the website. Plus, the oldtimers prefer to hang out there - which instantly makes it better. It'd be nice if Scott changed the link at the top for us...

Hey - just wanted to toot my own horn. I applied for a job as a writer for Engadget a few years ago -- and was on my way to getting it, until their parent company (AOL, I believe) had massive layoffs and cut the blogging budget. A few days ago a friend of mine mentioned NeoWin.net and said I should apply. Apparently they get ~2 million hits/month. So I took a little time off from my term project (due Monday...) and filled out the application that consisted of a few writing samples. Well, they hired me on yesterday, and I have two posts on the site so far! One of the stories is about the FanVision device, and I even link back to one of Jack's posts here on TSW to give the board a little love. The second post is about an interview that Yahoo's CEO did with USA TODAY. Check 'em out - and bookmark the site if you like what you see. Fanvision: http://www.neowin.ne...ure-at-the-game Yahoo CEO: http://www.neowin.ne...ir-creepy-rival Direct link to all of my articles: http://www.neowin.net/profile/christopher_white Constructive criticism welcome -- but I"m not sure that TSW ever gives that out.

Or that the Saints win it all not long after their city is flooded...? Then why do the Patriots get to keep the minutemen (with guns) as their mascot? Johnson didn't pretend to shoot anyone. Not like he aimed at the Pats bench and started firing off rounds. He fired in the air, as a salute.

Patriots > Yankees < Plague?
-
They probably did -- they had all sorts of stuff in there. And if they didn't, I'm sure the vendor would've gotten it for us. (he bought me a Twins playoff cap too ).
-
No idea.... People were booing pretty loudly an inning or two before the 2 run inning. Wish I had remembered to bring my camera... But I still captured a pretty nice picture of the skyline near sunset with my crappy camera phone: The suite was awesome - full open bar (too bad I don't drink....), and food/snacks everywhere. There's a lot of attention to detail in this stadium as well - I thought the Xcel Energy Center (hockey) had a nice suite level ,but it's nothing compared to Target Field. Two  (for everything but the game itself )
-
But I'm going to the game and really want to see a win. I'd like the Twins to win the next 3 in a row - but I'll take just tonight if possible.
-
Good, hopefully the Twins will win tonight then.

Best team money can buy.
-
I know - I'm just surprised because the Twins are the small market fighting against the big market. Granted, their payroll is pretty high now thanks mainly to Mauer and Morneau (who is injured...), but I'd still think more people would root for the underdog. Tomorrow's game is at 5:07 CST - what a strange start time! Can't wait to go though - never been to a playoff game before.
-
Es, tu, Rock? I'm surprised there aren't more Twins fans in here...
-
He spent a crapload of money on free agent offensive linemen a few years back (Langston Walker and one or two others who I can't remember right now). That didn't turn out well, but it was a lot of cash and they were the big names at the time. He wanted to throw that money away?
-
The difference is that the league NEVER blocks team moves. In fact, Ralph is one of the only owners to actually vote against all of the moves.
-
Yeah, because you need to have an "exit strategy" before leaving a city. Just like Cleveland did when they moved to Baltimore...
