I see it the same way. Possession WR2s and 1st round corners in a zone scheme and RTs are high risk to go first contract and out. I'm surprised no QB, no DL-- in the coming years they'll be forced to address these foundational positions and they better hope like heck the right players are there at the right time. DL is vital in our scheme and though it's not an immediate need and it may not result in a "day one starter," it's more important than the positions we reactively patched up. I would prefer to use FA for patching holes, top of the draft for foundation whether they start right away or not. For example why not Taco Charlton at pick 27? In a couple years we'll be desperate for a DE. Putting heat on the QB is the most important thing on defense. A zone corner can be found later in the draft or in FA. A DE that works out is a lot more likely to be re-upped than a 1st round corner in a zone scheme. This team isn't a Superbowl contender now so I'd be drafting with an eye toward opening a window about 3 years down the line, and sustaining it rather than just "what immediate needs can we patch today?" As Jeff has pointed out coaches typically take a short-sighted approach. It takes a savvy personnel man to have a long-term vision. This is why I say the Pegulas have set McDermott up to fail. As a rookie head coach he should be executing someone else's vision rather than directing the entire organization. All of his picks represent drafting for immediate need rather than the long-term. The owners, who I am quite grateful to, have a lot of learning to do yet. Just my take. -
Just my take, I think that Sammy is a rare talent the equivalent of which can't be found in free agency. If he's durable he's a truly foundational piece. But we need better, more aggressive quarterback play to really see that talent shine through. He's virtually ALWAYS open but the QB just doesn't get him the ball enough.

I don't see it, John. It seems to me like they're just looking at their needs and patching them. Short-sighted, no vision for how to build a foundation for sustained success. Patchwork mentality. We need a WR2 so draft one of those. We need a RT so draft one of those. These are not foundational pieces, these are the type of things that should be addressed in free agency. And on top of it we're giving away draft picks to execute the patch job. Reactive rather than strategic. -

He's not even the best pure wrestler from Japan (probably Shibata). He's a good wrestler but more than that he's just a really cool dude. Bray is right, if it's built up sky high beforehand and you're like grrrrr this better be good, it's likely to be a letdown. -

I have hope that once McDermott falls into the Buffalo Black Hole and is relieved of his duties 3-4 years from now, the Pegulas will learn they need a personnel man in charge of personnel. But hey, I'm an optimist. -

Apparently he was reported by multiple members for "crusading" against Tyrod, but I wonder where are the suspensions on the other side of the equation for those who crusade in defense of Tyrod? What is the difference? The issue really, similar to when FireChan got the axe, is that RLB disagreed with the majority and was uninterested in being shamed into silence. Those who reported him are a bit like those who demanded the murder of Jesus and the excommunication of Galileo out of their own insecurities. That's to compare the condemnation, not to say Ryan is much like Jesus. Jesus is obviously not a Bills fan. Clinging to preconceived notions and the defensiveness that follows from that is a recipe for destructiveness. I wonder if Jeffismagic is the next one for us to tear down, the talk of "crusade" has begun there. I think the real crusade are the ones who want to banish these good folks because they disagree. -

I'd be thrilled if it were the Bills. Why all the concern about year one? Careers last considerably longer than one season. -

Good stuff thanks Gunner. You said it all along about the quarterbacks, for many months, and the NFL does agree. -

Yeah the trade down is nice. I'm meh on the corner even though be looks like a good player but happy to have the extra picks. Hopefully those college QBs hold up through the season and the Bills can get up there next year. -

The owners need to get out of the way and hand the operation over to a personnel man, whether it's a GM, Team President, or "football Czar." They'll learn but it's going to take time and I think McDermott falls into the quicksand before they wisen up. -

Hallelujah! I hope they don't cost themselves a QB with a trade like last year. Interesting that they like the aggressive gunslinger out of all the QBs. -

I want a QB but I do prefer this board to Leroi's. I really really don't want another 1st round WR for Tyrod to ignore while he runs out of bounds. At least Howard would help in the running game which is where our bread is buttered as long as T-Mobile is the QB. Also FireChan makes an interesting case that Cla may be "done." Even if not, Howard would free him up for more of an H-back role he excelled in in Miami and Dennison I think knows how to use those kinds of players. Then in a couple years Clay will be gone and Howard will be an important piece in the middle of the field for helping along a young quarterback. Basically I prefer anything over WR.
