I could see them making a play for Revis now that Ryan is here. Ryan loves to have 2 great CB's that can play on an island & get after the QB. His defense is at it's best with 2 very strong man on man corners that can take on the best 2 WR's on their own. There would have to be another move made to make room for him. He's going to want at least 10 million a season I would guess. McKelvin is making close to 5 million a year so I would assume he'd be the odd man out. That would give us Revis & Gilmore on the outside. Revis is the type of player that can elevate this defense into the elite category. Arguably the best CB playing in the league right now that can match up with any WR in the league & neutralize them without any help

SF FA guard Mike Iupati (update: going to Cardinals)
smapdi replied to CJPearl2's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He definitely needs to considered. Besides QB, OG is the biggest hole on this entire team. They need not 1 but 2 starting OG's. Iupati is a big, mauling OG that is very good. If they bring in Roman, then that could make it even more likely since he coached him in SF. Money really isn't an issue in my eyes with Pagula's deep pockets running the show- I hope they spend every penny to the cap that is allowed. They need to sign a couple OG's so bringing in one of the best young OG's in Iupati would be a good move. They are short on draft picks so FA will be major part of the plan. Getting him would really take the pressure off of having to use our top pick on a OG. They could go BPA with the 50th overall pick & then probably find a top 3 OG in the 3rd round to man the other OG spot. -
I have no problem at all with this hire. Rex Ryan is a proven NFL coach that can come in from day 1 & start taking this team in the right direction. There is no lost time where a 1st time HC is trying to find his sea legs as a head coach like all of the hires this team has had the past 15 years (Gailey, Mularkey, Marrone, Williams, etc..) They will hit the ground running because Rex Ryan knows exactly what he wants to do & how to do it. He has proven that he can win with a good defense & the numbers back it up. During his entire tenure in NY, his defense's worst finish was 11th; most of the time they were top 5. You could argue that the talent on this defense equals the best he ever had in NY. I think that Ryan takes this defense from a top 10 unit into the unquestioned best defense in the NFL. On top of that, he has a hatred of NE & Belichick that is almost unrivaled. He has shown that he has the ability to put together a game plan that can frustrate Brady & Belichick and beat them. There is no question that the road to the playoffs for Buffalo goes through NE and Ryan knows how to beat them. His players love him & his enthusiasm. He should really rally the troops & bring some passion into this team. I can't wait to see what he can do with this defense

No first round pick? Why not trade Sammy?
smapdi replied to The Frankish Reich's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I find it hard to believe anyone would want to even entertain the thought of trading Sammy Watkins. This team hasn't had a legit #1 WR in over a decade; they're not easy to find. He put up nearly a 1000 yards his rookie season while playing almost the entire year with some type of injury. He was also terribly implemented into the offense. There is nothing but great things in his future. What do you plan on doing about the WR situation when you trade Sammy?? Robert Woods is a very good WR2 but he can't take on CB1's & double teams. Whomever they bring in at QB is going to need WRs. With an OC that actually has a clue, Watkins will be worth every penny. The NFL is a passing league now & a player of Watkins caliber will win you games -
Clowney may be who we thought he was
smapdi replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Clowney has some of the most freakish athleticism & size of any player ever to enter the NFL. He has used it to dominate his competition since HS & made it look easy in the process. I fear that his pure dominance due to his physical traits has left him with an inflated sense confidence- he's always dominated in his mind and he always will. There were questions about his work ethic and ability to play through injury at SC. Those reports raise red flags for me. The NFL is full of top level athletes that Clowney can't just coast through & physically dominate. He is going to have to really start to bust his hump & play through injury if he wants to be successful. On the other side of the coin, there is Sammy Watkins. He has the work ethic & drive to be a standout in this league. Everything he said in pre-draft interviews and once he was drafted tells me that he has the necessary mental fortitude to be a success. The Bills had him as their #1 rated prospect for a reason. I think they would have taken Watkins over Clowney if they had to make that choice. Watkins has already proven he will play through injury after broken ribs in the preseason & first part of the regular season. Watkins is one of the most well spoken kids I've seen... I see nothing but success in his future -
There is no question Hughes and Dareus are the top priorities for resigning. We have Dareus' 5th year option picked up but I only see his new deal sky rocketing in price the longer they wait. Hughes has proven he is a dynamic talent that can consistently pressure the QB. He is also entering the prime of his career at only 26. I would be on the phone with his agent right now offering a Hali type deal- 5 years / 50 mil range. He is well worth that considering Mario isn't getting any younger. Dareus is even more important in my eyes. DTs with his skill set are nearly non existent. He opens everything up for everyone else on the line consistently taking on double teams. 7 sacks is a great year for a 340lb DT. He's on pace for 14. I would offer him McCoy's deal right now and hope he takes it. You just cannot let him get away
-
Watkins is a special player. I loved the move up for him and it is paying dividends. He has had a major role in every win & I highly doubt this team is 5-3 with Eric Ebron instead of him. He is one of the most well spoken, high character rookies I've ever seen & I know you won't ever see that same mistake from him again. It was a stupid rookie mistake and I'm sure Marrone let him know. I will cut him some slack. He was on his way to scoring his first ever 89 yard TD in the big leagues & was over come with excitement. They ended up scoring a TD & he learned a valuable lesson;no harm,no foul
-
I would do the trade again in a heart beat. Sammy Watkins is a stud already in just 7 games. Anyone pointing out they woukd rather have Benjamin is delusional- Watkins is on a whOle different level then him. The only reason he has more yards is due to the fact Sammy had EJ as QB and was moronically used as a decoy vs NE. I have no doubt at all that Watkins will be in the elite tier of WRs. He is the total package & can do everything: insane body control, amazing hands, explosive speed, and unreal football IQ. The NFL is a passing league now and having an elite WR is a massive boost to an offense. Without Watkins, the Bills are 1-6. There is no way you can say any of the other WRs on this roster make that catch against DET or the plays he made on the last drive against MIN. There are very few players that can impact the game like Watkins can. EVERYONE knew the ball was going to Watkins on that game winning pass & MIN even took a timeout to stop it. Watkins didn't care and burnt MIN best CB & demonstrated his amazing hands and body control to win the game. I can't believe anyone here would rather have Eric Ebron over him. That is a joke to me. A player like Watkins is worth his weight in gold and I'm sure the Browns are sick to their stomach for passing on their chance to get him. It's only been 7 games & he has only scatched the surface of what he can do. Orton and him will only continue to develop together & the best had yet to come

ongoing list of imperative changes
smapdi replied to enlightener's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I still don't understand Hackett's obsession with running Spiller straight up the gut out of shotgun. Just a Terrible misuse of him. FJax, Brown, and Boobie are on the team to pound the ball up the middle. I really wish Hackett woukd go back and watch the tape of Gailey's use of Spiller- you know, the year he had over 1200 yards at 6.0 ypc. They need to use him on counters, tosses, sweeps, screens, and motion him out of the backfield. Get him the ball in space! FJax, Brown, and Boobie can pound the ball uo the middle. -
That really sucks for the Saints after committing a ton of money to Byrd. I had no problem at all with the Bills letting him walk: he clearly didn't want to be here & would have only been a distraction to the locker room if they franchised him again. This defense has a lot of young players and Byrd's bad attitude would've been a cancer in the locker room. You don't win games with players that don't want to be on your team. Aaron Williams is a much better all around safety anyways. Yes, Byrd was a very good deep free safety, centerfielder but his run defense left much to be desired. Williams has better size and is a much better tackler.

I'd like to know where all the Dareus haters have gone?? I seem to remember a lot people calling him a wasted pick and definitely not worth a top 5 pick. He's always been very good at getting aftet the QB which is a very rare and valuable trait for a DT. He has 18.5 sacks thru his first 3 years. After today's 3 sack dominance, he already has 5 through 5 games. QB pressure from your DT's is by far the most valuable kind. They have shortest distance to the QB & cause the most disruption - does not allow the QB to step into his throw. Where he really has improved & turned himself into an elite player is his run stuffing ability. He consistently takes on double teams and beats them. He has been a major force in this teams massively improved run D. They still haven't allowed a rushing TD. Teams are only averaging 2.9 ypc and 70 yards rushing per game.

Nice write up. I was at the game and getting to watch a hurt Sammy Watkins just routinely get open was a thing of beauty. I loved the move when they made it & his performance Sunday reaffirmed that. He is truly a special talent. Players like him at WR are very hard to find, let alone having the opportunity to acquire one. 8 rec / 118 yards / 1TD in his 2nd pro game with bad ribs was outstanding. He gives us that much needed stud in the WR corp. Teams will really now have to focus om him and Woods/Williams + the running game will really benefit. Seantrel Henderson has been a revelation. What a steal in the 7th. Holding Wake to just 0.5 tackles and no QB hits is amazing. EJ Manuel has really taken some big steps forward. He is doing exactly what this team needs him to do at this juncture. He was super raw coming out so I figured we would see some big improvement this season & he Def has. I will eat some crow on Hackett. He really hit the tape in the off season and switched things up. I thought he was the weakest link by far but his play calling has surprised me
-
Dang. Good move for them. Really like Timothy Wright at TE. That is the type of move we should've made to improve our abysmal TE situation. Wright is up and coming & could really break out in that offense.
-
Talk about over reaction. I am willing to give Kouandjio a little more then 3 exhibition games before I call him a bust. He hasn't played football his entire life so his technique could definitely use work; in college he could get by using his massive size and strength to mask poor technique. Everyone in the pros is equivalent to the strongest players he faced in college. He definitely need to hit the weight room and be coached up. He has a couple things going for him though. He's a very hard worker and used to winning. He will dive right into learning what he needs to do. Marrone is also a former linemen so he can teach him what he needs to know. We also have some dominant d line men he can practice against.

Is there a doctor in the house (re: bruised ribs)
smapdi replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm no doctor but I would shut him down til week 1. Maybe let him get to practice in a week or so when pain subsides but no contact at all til opening week. These games are meaningless exhibitions and there is no sense in risking further injury in them. I woukd also keep FJax and Spiller out of last 2 preseason games. Those 2 have nothing to prove or gain from playing in meaningless games. Those 3 players are the most important players on offense so why risk it? -
There is no way they move Glenn to OG when he gets back. I don't understand the thinking on that move?? Glenn has proven he can be a legit LT in the NFL & had a very good season last year. LT is the most difficult position to play on the line and some of you want to move one of the best under 25 years old players out of that spot? With how Henderson has been playing, I would assume that once Glenn gets back, he will be playing RT in place of Pears. He has experience at RT @ Miami so there really shouldn't be an issue with him playing on the right side. The OG situation is a bit worrying. Williams has been hurt and I want no part of Legursky starting again. I'm hoping Richardson can make some strides and step into the LG spot if Williams can't get healthy. That would leave Urbik at RG Glenn - Richardson - Woods - Urbik - Henderson

Hughes is definitely an intriguing player entering this season. After the resurgence he had last season with 10 sacks, and the talent surrounding him, you would have to believe he is primed for another 10+ sack season. He is a prototype DE for Schwartz's defense. His defense calls on the front four dictating the game and for his ends to line up wide (9 tech) & beat the OTs with their speed. That is exactly what Hughes excels at. He will almost always face one on ones with the talent surrounding him; not many teams are going to choose to leave Mario or Kyle one on one. I expect him to have a better season then last year. If he does keep rolling, you have to resign him. The defensive line is integral in being successful & if you can create pressure with just your front 4, it opens up so many possibilities. Hughes and Dareus are the young studs on the line... you have to keep your young talent around. If I'm going to devote big money to any unit, it's my d-line. The cap will also jump another 10 million like it did this year so that covers Hughes cap hit.

It would be a water fall of praise from the National media if Watkins was acquired by NE in your scenario with how he has looked so far in camp. All the talk would be how NE pulled another great move and who cares what they gave up; they now have Sammy Watkins on their roster. Players like Watkins do not come around often. He is a game changer. If they don't make the move, they probably select Ebron at 9. I will take Sammy Watkins over Eric Ebron & whomever the Browns pick with our 1st next season. Watkins is a franchise player. Those players cost 2 1st round picks and a boat load of money (50+ million). The Bills have him locked up for 5 season at a very reasonable rate.

Chicago Media- Bills are an Easy Win
smapdi replied to jethro_tull's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't think it's an easy win for Bears at all. They have the 30th ranked defenses according to PFF and I believe they were dead last against the run. Last time I checked, we run the ball pretty well. Yes, they have one of the best passing attacks but their offensive line has struggled. They should have their hands full with our defensive line -
Probably obvious observation on Watkins
smapdi replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The truly great WRs catch the ball with their hands. Watkins caught some flack because he's "only" 6'1" but the way he catches everything with his hands coupled with his vertical give him a huge catch radius. 6'1" is plenty big for a #1 WR considering the average NFL CB is around 5'10" I think he will have some monster plays off play action. With our running attack, defenses loved to stack the box and cheat the run last season. It will only take Watkins burning his man on a PA fake & taking it 80 yards for defenses to back off. Once they start to respect his speed and back off, you can now work him underneath on screens and quick slants. He really can do it all -
Yessss. Great news. Undisclosed non football injuries are frightening. I was worried this coukd turn into a Hairston situation which would've been a nightmare. Glenn is on the cusp of being an elite LT. He will be a major part of this offense & we need him watching Manuel's blindside.
-
He's worth way more to this team then whatever they would get in return for him. This is the most run oriented team in the league & some of you want to trade away our best RB?? Doesn't make sense to me. I really hope they resign him as well.. he's a game breaking type talent. 5.1 ypc career average

Let's talk running backs to change the qb conversation
smapdi replied to Clippers of Nfl's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Bills definitely have an elite RB group. Just Spiller and FJax alone put them in the top 5. Then add Bryce Brown and Anthony Dixon to address the weakest part of the running attack last season (short yardage) & you get an elite unit. Spiller will be healthy and I can see him matching his 2012 season- 1200 yards. I'm not sure if he can average 6.0 ypc again but his career average is 5.1 ypc so he should be able to maintain that at around 200-250 carries. He is a home run hitter and forces the defense to account for him on every single play. I still can't believe how many people around here just want to give him away in a trade.. Players like Spiller do not grow on trees. This is a run first team & Spiller has the talent to be a top 5 RB. Fred Jackson is Fred Jackson. He can do everything you ask & is the textbook example of "All-Around RB". More of a 1B at this point but is still a very good player. Great blocker as well Bryce Brown is an exciting addition. Almost a combo of Spiller and Jackson: Big & physical @ 220 LBs with 4.40 speed. Put up back to back 160 yard performances last season in PHI when McCoy was sidelined with injuries. Hopefully he has a Jerry Hughes type season for us. Anthony Dixon completes the unit with brute force. Will take care of short yardage and goalline situations which this offense has struggled with, No way the Jets are even close. Chris Johnson is not CJ2K anymore; he's been used up by TEN and not the same back that put up 2000 yards. I will take Bryce Brown over Chris Ivory any day. I would say only the Eagles and Seahawks can compete with the talent we have. -
I was really impressed with Henderson. No one expects a 7th round pick to go out & take on Jason Piere-Paul in his first ever NFL action and actually hold his own. He definitely raised my eye brows with how he looked with the first team offense. He also has the size to slide over to RT when Glenn comes back. Regarding Kouandjio: he had a few rough plays but I don't think it's the end of the world. It was his first ever NFL action. Still have 4 more preseason games to improve. Hopefully Henderson's performance lights a fire under him. He sounds like a very motivated guy from his post draft interviews.

When you weren't looking...
smapdi replied to You herd it hear last's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm sure he will see both sides. One thing is for sure though: he will see a lot of 1 on 1 matchups. I really can't see too many offenses doubling Hughes over Mario, Kyle, or Dareus. Hughes has the speed to take the edge on almost any OT; left or right. Especially in Schwartz's wide 9 configuration. He will be lined up far off the OTs outside shoulder so he can use his speed to really out race thst 300+ lb OT to the outside
