NFL looks like it's going to move draft to May
Luxy312 replied to bbb's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Again, look at revenue sources. Teams get the most money from television advertising and Sunday Ticket (above 60% of total revenue estimated by Forbes). Having extra playoff games means more TV revenue. Selling 5k or even 10k tickets for a preseason game doesn't even scratch the surface of what the NFL would pull in for 2 more weeks of playoff games. Arguing economics here doesn't fly. That's why if you listen to Goodell, you're hearing a consistent theme. They're talking about eliminating 2 preseason games. Of course they would love to add a bunch back in the playoffs. More playoffs = more money for everyone. -
BREAKING NEWS: 49ers WR Michael Crabtree tears Achilles
Luxy312 replied to thebandit27's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
1,100 yards and 9 TD's wasn't shabby last year. Makes you wonder now what the 49ers might do to shore up the team. They'll need that production. -
Did you even read my post. They lost their biggest offensive weapon in the offseason. Most important player for them.

1. 6 QB's and 9 non QB's...how does that break down...6 QB's, 6 RB's, and 3 WR's. So QB is tied for MOST ROY wins in last 15 years. However, the ERA I am referring too is the last 10 years, which is the period that rookie QB's started being given the job more often in their first year going back to Carson Palmer. In the last 10 years, the ROY has gone to a QB 6 times...thats 60% of the time, including 5 of the last 7 years. You want to include as old as statistics as you can, because without them your point has no value. However, that time period was VERY different than the NFL of the last 10 years. Nope. It's 2 WR's, 6 QB's, and 7 RB's. Again, you can cherry pick your era, but I'm not having it. If you want most likely, it's RB. 2. Speaking of Palmer, your point about Boldin winning it over him is hilarious...Boldin set all kind of rookie WR records and had over 100 catches as a rookie WR. Of course he was going to win it. Exactly correct. There's also NOTHING suggesting that won't happen this year. 3. I actually said I think Woods has a better shot to win it than EJ, yet you focus on EJ. My only point was that a rookie QB who is successful has an advantage given the high profile, difficulty, and importance of the position. The last 10 years seems to agree with me You pick Woods, but ignore other rookies like Tavon Austin that were rated much higher by far. Nice homer rimmed glasses. 4. You bringing up bad rookie QB's is hilarious. Please show me anywhere I said that just because EJ starts he is a favorite. I said, again you have to actually read the posts to know this though, that if he does and is successful that gives him an advantage...nothing more, nothing less. You said that if he put up modest success that he would be the favorite. My point is that modest success will not. The QB's that won it that I pointed out had well above average rookie seasons. The ones that I pointed out that didn't had modest success or below average success. 5. Lastly, your comment about me having no understanding of statistics is comical. One of the most important factors in statistical analytics is trends. Analyzing stats of how things were, versus how they are, is an epic failure is statistical valuation. So, maybe you should read up on statistical analytics before accusing others of not having a clue about them as everything thing you said was factually incorrect...and severely incorrect to be honest. You are barking up the wrong tree with those comments Your comments on statistics is laughable at best. Trends are NOT one of the most important factors unless trends can be used to predict the future. I have advanced certifications in statistics. You should read up on probability and probility distributions, central tendency, making inferences about more than two population values, and the general linear model. If you learn anything from that, you will get that just because 6 of the last 10 years a QB has won the OROY award that it somehow gives E.J. an advantage if he has a "modest" year. Probability distribution would already tell you you're wrong, not less all the other tests. Your "evaluation" if we can even call it that is filled with conjecture and speculation, and nothing more. Hopeful rose colored glasses.

NFL looks like it's going to move draft to May

Earnings from preseason games are infinitely tiny. The collective revenue from having two more weeks of playoff games (and the allocation that every team would receive of that revenue) would more than make up for it. Bad answer. -

Hmmmm..I thought he played for North Texas, but you're right. Longhorns. -
Already explained. He's a role player only and not even a starter. Making a play here or there doesn't make you one of the best player on defense. Citing one play doesn't make him one of the best players on defense.
-
Yes. He's not even close to one of the best players on defense. Thanks for asking.

Well, the teams already pay taxes on their individual profits. Players pay taxes on the paychecks they collect. Executives in the front office of the NFL as an organization pay taxes as well. I didn't see anywhere in the article saying the the NFL as an organization is hoarding money. As such, are you advocating that double taxation of income is OK? A collection of team owners functioning as a 501©(6) doesn't seem improper to me on any scale. Taxes are already being paid on everything the NFL earns.

One of the best players? He had 2 sacks last year. There were 4 guys ahead of him and another 4 that had the same. He had 3 defensed passes. Again, 9 guys ahead of him including 2 defensive linemen and a linebacker. 12 tackles. 17 players ahead of him. This could really be done all day. If he was really all that good, he would have put up better numbers. In addition, he would have been on the field more.

Very tough call. I skipped the WR's because I think the Bills will have their rookies out there plus Graham most of the time. Would have liked Easley to succeed, but just doesn't look like it. Bills also have a lot of youth on the roster at defensive back. Don't see Williams upsetting Searcy for the starting role there. He could succeed if they don't re-sign Byrd. However, I think they will. I'm with the OP here and think Carrington. He can play enough positions to have utility, although to say he will "thrive" may be a stretch. I don't think he'll lead the team in any meaningful stats, but I think his value as a multi-positional role player will be evident.

It is a tough prop at 6.5 and of that there is no question. Here's my two cents: In the division, it's going to be hard to beat the Patriots. BUT (and this is a big one) if the week 17 game does not affect their playoff position, BB's been known to sit his starters after a series. There, I might suggest a conditional split, otherwise a Pats sweep. The Dolphins lost their most prolific offensive weapon in Reggie Bush. I could see the Bills sweep them. The week 16 game at home should be a whipping as Miami is awful in cold weather. While the Jets are in shambles, they always play us tough. That's even with Sanchez at the helm. If it's Smith, he'll be playing for the draft snub. Call that a split. In regards to the rest, Carolina is a tough call. They played horribly at the beginning of the season, but excellent at the end last year. Bills generally have been better at home and starting with two there, I don't see them losing back to back. I'll take road wins at Cleveland and Jacksonville and home wins versus Cincy and KC. That could be 8 or 9 wins for the season. That would not hurt my feelings at all.

Why not get rid of 2 of the preseason games and expand the playoffs? Get rid of the bye weeks completely. They make little sense anyway and just provide additional advantages to teams that already had good regular seasons. Do those teams really deserve an extra week to prepare? Have eight teams qualify for the playoffs from each the NFC and AFC and use the current tie breaking system as needed to decide who goes and who doesn't. Seed them like you do in basketball so you know exactly who could play who in each round. No re-seeding BS as they do it now. Done. My feelings would not be hurt. -
Possible changes coming to Pro Bowl
Luxy312 replied to Just Jack's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This in a nutshell. Why play a game where the players don't really push themselves all that much; the coaches aren't even allowed to use a full playbook (blitzing prohibited); and the game really means nothing measurably. Winners get $50K and losers get $25K. Peanuts. -

He wasn't on my radar either, but for the reason previously mentioned (i.e. small school/program guy). If you go linebacker, I would have been happy with Daryl Washington or Brandon Spikes. -
Brian Urlacher annouces his retirement from the NFL
Luxy312 replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't disagree with that either. Things got acrimonious pretty quickly here with the barbs going back and forth on the evening sports reports. None the less, Urlacher wasn't the same guy last year that he's been in the years before. Slower getting to runners; not as good as helping in pass coverage; etc. If he were as good, his phone would have been ringing off the hook. Unfortunately for him, it was silent. -

OK, I got the amount wrong, but here's the article. They did have an offer out to him, but it maxed out at $2 million. You can read for yourself. http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2013-03-20/sports/chi-chicago-bears-brian-urlacher-20130308_1_brian-urlacher-phil-emery-and-coach-bears-offer -

If you take the gift of hindsight, I agree with your statement. Troup has all of 2 starts none the less. At the time of the draft is what I'm talking about. Would 20 starts out of Cody been better than 2 out of Troup? I'll let the masses do the math there. Back then, neither Joseph nor Gronkowski were on my radar. -
An "era" isn't a couple years guy. You have no understanding at all (obviously) of statistics and the requirement to have a statistically significant sample. Even if you defined this "era" as the last 15 years, you're still talking 6 QB's and 9 non-QB's. You're also talking about QB's that all started right away and had measurable success (above average production). Manuel will have to be the week 1 starter and have measurable success. Even then, that doesn't make him the front runner by any stretch. Don't forget that Carson Palmer didn't win it over Anquan Boldin in 2003. In 2005, neither Alex Smith or Jason Campbell (with modest production) won it over Cadillac Williams. Jamarcus Russell (who started but was trash) didn't win over Adrian Peterson in 2007. As recently as 2009, neither Mark Sanchez nor Matt Stafford got the not over Percy Harvin. If you want to use stats, then actually use them. Recent QB winners of the ROY awards had more than "modest success" as you're suggesting.

Hopefully he saved his money. If not, it makes me wonder why he wouldn't just take the $3 million offer from Chicago to play for a year. For the most part, he's been the face of the franchise here for awhile. -

I forgot about Branch. The Bills did just sign him to a 1-year $3 million deal. Going through the list of players, Troup has to be pretty far down the charts in terms of defensive linemen that could see playing time. Guess we'll see. Am I missing anyone below? Mario Williams Marcel Dareus Kyle Williams Mark Anderson Alex Carrington Jay Ross Jamie Blatnick Aaron Tipoti (rookie) Izaan Cross (rookie) I did. Jarron Gilbert and Corbin Bryant.
