Why I think the long-term coaching change won't happen
BuffaloWings replied to JÂy RÛßeÒ's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think they shouldn't care less about whether or not April wants to go back to special teams IF they make him interim head coach. The main problem is the football operations. They need to rebuild the scouting department, the O & D lines, then get a competent individual to lead the team on the field. I wouldn't expect a mid-season head coaching change to turn the team around. I just want it to happen to prove to the fans and everyone involved with the organization that the on-field performance is beyond unacceptable. Then take your time to make the major changes that we all want to see so that it's all in place during the off-season and ready for the draft. If you see a coaching change in the NFL during the season, it usually is done with no expectations of the playoffs. Changing a coach in the NHL, MLB, or NBA is different because the seasons are long enough to turn things around (see: 2009 Colorado Rockies, 2003 Florida Marlins, 2009 Pittsburgh Penguins & Carolina Hurricanes). The NFL season is too short to expect an immediate turnaround. -
Something bad happened today :(
BuffaloWings replied to Mike in Syracuse's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I felt the same thing, but it doesn't mean I'm "ending my fandom" for the Bills. Even if they won today, it's not like I'd be excited for something for this season. I just have very little expectations of this team. I'll still pay attention next week, but won't expect them to do anything exciting. -
I don't think many of us care about the playoffs...just get Jauron out of here. I'll be ok with it if he gets the boot tomorrow (though I don't see that happening until the end of the season) and we have an interim coach through the end of the season, as long as there are no expectations of the playoffs or rattling off 7 wins in a row. Any potential overhaul definitely won't happen until the offseason, but firing Jauron tomorrow at least shows the fan base that you're aware and willing to make some changes starting now.

A Few Thoughts About The Game
BuffaloWings replied to Bill from NYC's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Exactly. I will still proclaim that I'm a fan of the Bills, but I realize this team is worthless. I only listened to Murph & Kelso, but what seems to be happening on the field is that this team is trying. Everyone out there (save for a select few) is giving their all to help the team win. It comes down to how they're worn out by the 4th quarter, a bad coaching decision or three makes things worse, and they can't come back and/or hold on. Time for a complete change. I really hope Vic Carucci is right. -
Which is one of the reasons that Johnson got the start. Flutie's weaknesses were showing all year long and I recall the offense struggling for a few stretches. That said, he was still the starter. You DON'T change how you run your team once the playoffs start...go with what brought you there.
-
Which goes to show you who was making the decisions. Johnson's only start that year was the final game against Indy's backups. I think the Bills won something like 31-6 with RJ having one of those "I'm going to be a free agent soon" games. With the money they were paying RJ, someone probably figured it was time for him to earn it. But when your starting QB takes you a 10-5 record....yeah, the right thing to do was start the #2 guy in the playoffs.
-
Right...even though they still should've covered the kickoff. I remember asking why they were kicking with 20 seconds left. There was plenty of time to get closer - even if they ran the ball or completed a pass in bounds, they could have still spiked the ball with about 4-5 seconds left.
-
I'll be as blasphemus as you...I think the refs got it right because (IMO) the ball traveled pretty much parallel to the line on the field, almost exactly perpendicular to the sideline. I don't remember if there was a ref on that line, but had he thrown the flag, it probably would've been overturned. Me too. I didn't think Johnson played terrible in that game, but having Flutie in there would likely have made it a completely different game. And I'll echo what PTR said - cover the kickoff and the Bills move on to Jacksonville.

Finally .. The Real Problem Comes to Light
BuffaloWings replied to Gugny's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I was referring to the team that went 5-1 early in the season...that's all, nothing else. He was clearly bad after that, so I don't think he would have been talking about the 2-8 finish. Sorry I didn't spell it out in great detail. -
Finally .. The Real Problem Comes to Light
BuffaloWings replied to Gugny's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Everybody chill...I think we're blowing this a tad out of proportion. "where I was last season" was playing well (not great, but well) and leading the team to wins. I think that's all he meant. Also, you have to be able to see things differently while on the sidelines. He has the time to look at one aspect of the offense on one play and something different on the next play. I think that's all he was trying to say. Please don't read into this stuff too much. -
I still think it's hard to call Maybin a bust or a "draft mistake" when he's hardly seen the field. Talk about breaking in someone slowly....

100% chance Dick gets fired but
BuffaloWings replied to jax bill backer's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
What I'm afraid of happening is Ralph retains Jauron again and then realizes the money starts going down the drain when season ticket sales drop like a rock. Then they go out and acquire Michael Vick in another TO-style move. If Brandon knows what he's doing from a marketing perspective, he'll be telling Ralph that Jauron needs to be gone or else tickets won't be sold. -
Gruden would probably be a good fit. This isn't a team stocked with veterans and most of the guys have just reached their prime age or aren't quite there yet. When you have a young team, I think you're better off with a younger coach that can relate to them. Jauron is too old-school and conservative (and just old) to effectively coach a young team. There was a report not too long ago that somehow linked Bruce Allen (former Tampa GM) to the Bills. Not sure how that came about, but I wouldn't be surprised if Allen brought Gruden along wherever he went.

If we get a new regime in here and TO is gone, I'd like to see them go after Kevin Walter. I know the OL and QB play needs to be addressed first, but this might be a perfect guy to fit in as a #2 WR.

ESPN: Browns to contact Holmgren
BuffaloWings replied to bills44's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If you really think that, you've got other issues. -
Right now, with this team...yes. But who knows what's going to happen after Week 17? There could be about 20 different things that could happen. Perhaps a new coaching regime could want nothing to do with Vick. Perhaps Ralph himself could not want anything to do with Vick. Maybe Ralph - as everyone says - just wants to sell more tickets and realizes that signing Vick to play here would do just that, especially when he retains Jauron (as much as it pains me to say it, we don't know for sure that Jauron will be gone after this year). But if a new coach comes in, he may want to do things his way (depending on how much power he has) and Vick could not be part of the plan.

Mortensen said this a few weeks ago...we all figured that he did so because they were Donahoe hires and their respective squads are doing well enough. I still don't know about Mularkey as a HC. He only had 2 years, but did a horrible job with Losman and the offense struggled badly. When you see coordinators that get a HC job, fail at it, then get another coordinator job and do well again, they're likely not made out to be a head coach. See Wade Phillips.

First, we really need to take whatever Porter says with a grain of salt. He certainly likes to make himself heard. Second, this does kinda smack of jealousy a little and there isn't much there to tell me anything new. Ray Lewis' comments are more enlightening, if you ask me. All of that said, it's sounding like it's going around the league that Brady & the Patriots* are getting (ahem) the "benefit of the doubt". Perhaps the officials are looking at every play involving pressure on Brady with a microscope to see anything remotely related to a shot at his legs.

What's Our FO's Dumbest Move of the 2000's
BuffaloWings replied to BB Fan 4 LIFE's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Mike Williams pick was not a bad move at all. In fact, I applauded it because they badly needed to upgrade the line at the time. He just turned out to be a huge bust - can't blame Donahoe for that. -
What's Our FO's Dumbest Move of the 2000's
BuffaloWings replied to BB Fan 4 LIFE's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Firing Wade was the right thing to do at the time. He had lost the team after the Flutie-Johnson thing, not to mention firing Bruce DeHaven and hiring a know-nothing special teams coach. My choice is Pat Williams. Clearly a top DL at the time and Donahoe did nothing to keep him. This may have been Ralph's choice to not pay to keep him, but it was easily the worst move by the front office. -
Well, I just got an email from the Group Sales dept today. They were announcing that plenty of tickets were still available for the New England and Indy games...as if that's a big surprise. I'm contemplating a response saying something to the effect of "If Dick Jauron is fired by then, I'll consider it. Otherwise, you're going to have a lot of empty seats." Anyone else have ideas for a good reply?

Rooting for the Bills to lose
BuffaloWings replied to coldstorage5's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You never root for your team to lose. Never. I know everyone around here is beyond frustration, but what's to gain by losing games? Besides, a real fan doesn't root for his/her team to lose at any point. -
Jim Zorn is at 18%. Tom Cable is at 12%. Both of those guys are under fire at a national level. I know this is a fan poll, but how can this organization live with itself when it has the least popular coach ever?
-
And can I have some of whatever you're drinking?
-
This has been the case for the past few years. The defense is solid, but it's "bend-don't-break" or prevent. They always keep the play in front of them, which is probably why we always see the CBs 7 yards off the line. Apparently, the coaches don't see how much time it chews off the clock and wears them down. A more aggressive D might actually stop the other team once in a while.
