Because KC would not have tried to return a kick. They would have called fair catch (0 seconds off the clock) or grab and kneel and lose 1 second. Or if they kicked it say inside the 10, you let the ball roll into the end zone. Touchback. No time lost.

WRONG. It would only cost that much time if a KC player fumbled around for the ball. Field it cleanly and kneel down. 1 second off the clock. Same chance for two plays. Squibb would make no difference, other than give KC even better field position.

Again. Fielding player can kneel it out and stop the clock. The clock does not run after the ball is kicked. Only when a KC player touches it.

Only if they fumbled around for the ball or tried to run it back. If the first guy fielding it kneels it out they lose one second. One.

For those saying the Bills should have squibbed it. Consider this. Say the Bills squib the kickoff. Clock doesn't start until a KC player touches it. An up man at the 40 fields the squib kick and kneels it out. 1 second off the clock, so 12 seconds are left. Still time for two plays, except now instead of the 25, the Chiefs are at their 40. Squibbing was no guarantee of winning if we could give up enough yards for a FG on two plays.
