How close is Allen to Mahomes if all things were equal?
90sBills replied to Alphadawg7's topic in The Stadium Wall
He played more games because he won those head to head matchups to advance. Fair or not win loss is a qb stat. 15-3 in the playoffs to start a career is ridiculous no matter how you slice it. It’s a team game true. But when certain teams get the ball last to close out games fans players announcers focus on who’s the qb for those teams and how has he done in those situations. Because those are defining moments for QBs. -

Winners get the spoils unfortunately. Coaching is part of it of course. Football is the ultimate team game. But individual stats are maintained and excellent achievements in those are praised. Before Brady rolled through the NFL everyone’s consensus best qb in NFL history was Joe Montana. Nobody said it’s because he had Bill Walsh, an offensive genius, as a head coach. -

Lamar won because his team had the #1 seed. If Bills can lock up the #1 one year Allen would win it for sure. Lamar is the classic dual threat qb. Those guys don’t win Super Bowls. Allen has an opportunity to evolve his game the way Steve Young or Elway did. Use the run sparingly to supplement the passing game. It’s not a coincidence that Allen’s best passing year in 2020 he had the fewest rushing yards. If he can pace his running during the regular season then go off in the playoffs him and the team could be so much more effective. -

This gives such clarity to their playoffs performances. It would be tough for the diehard of fans to say Allen has been better in the playoffs. -

None that I can think of. Cam Newton made it to a Super Bowl. Steve Young was probably the closest. His game got better when he focused more on passing and ran less. I don’t see Allen as a dual threat qb like Hurts or Lamar. That’s why I think his game would be much better if he limits his running. But most of the fanbase want him to continue trucking LB’s. It’s bizarre to want that for your franchise quarterback. -

That first MVS catch along the sideline was pretty spectacular regardless of who caught it. -

From my life experience it’s the opposite. People who are guilty of accusations are the first to deny. But I understand that not everyone views life the same. -

I didn’t dispute the scenarios you laid out. I disputed your conclusion from those scenarios. You know the part you didn’t include in your screenshot. You said if they switched Allen would have 3 rings and Mahomes zero. That’s called an opinion. I disagree. That’s my opinion. As to the other assertion against me personally, that’s also an opinion. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Just don’t pass them as facts with evidence. -

You’re right. KC is officially a dynasty now. Sneaking one in during their reign is not going to change people’s opinions of their team or their qb. Similar to Pitt winning during the Pats run. No one said Big Ben was better than Brady. -

Why would it kill you when your team is winning Super Bowls? Weird take. -

Mental grasp of the game in the qb position. Knowing when to take chances and when not to. Play within that parameter to give your team the best chance of winning. SB’s will come if Allen can do this. I’m hoping he can. -

When a qb is missing four OL starters and played with turf toe that required surgery days after the game I would hope any NFL competent DL could wrecked him. Since the guy has been to four Super Bowls I’m guessing he could afford to lose one. Some qb never even get a chance to be wrecked in a Super Bowl. -

That 2nd half against Cincy was really the only instance I’ve seen Mahomes struggled in the playoffs. It was also the point where his game evolved. He learned from that and has won 2 consecutive Super Bowls since that game, including beating that same Cincy team the following year in another AFCCG. I hope you’re right about Allen’s ceiling being higher than Mahomes. IMO, Allen just getting to Mahomes level would increase our odds of winning a championship. -

Absolutely Allen is good enough to win a championship and I’m really hoping he does. This fanbase needs one to exorcise all the demons from those four Super Bowl losses. Mahomes definitely has great support in KC. But he is also the biggest reason they have won championships. Yeah their defense was great last season but was mostly mediocre all the other years. Look at the Super Bowl against the Eagles. They were given up points like they weren’t on the field. Somehow Mahomes found a way to get his team more points. They won that game by taking all the time off the clock and kicking a chip shot winner. Mahomes was disciplined with the short methodical passing game. That’s the kind of discipline we need from Allen to close out big games against tough opponents. -

This is the kind of irrational stance that gets BillsMafia laughed at among NFL fans. With each passing year of not winning a superbowl the laughs will only get louder if this opinion remains prevalent among our fanbase. -

You know it is often said that what separates elite athletes in similar positions are the 6 inches between the ears. I’ve seen Mahomes brought his team back in divisional playoff games after being down 21-0 in the first quarter. I’ve also seen Allen completely forgot how to be an elite qb after his team went down 14-0 in the first quarter. Say what you will about physical abilities (I think Allen is the better athlete btw) but it requires more than that to have sustained success at the highest level. I don’t watch Marvel movies but didn’t Thanos lose at the end? -

Absolutely agree with you about KC’s FO. I’ll even go further by saying their coaches develop young players better than the Bills coaches. But to say Mahomes isn’t the difference is not accepting reality. It’s all good. -

Such a great point. Do the mundane well under pressure is what separates the best of the best. I know it’s a different sports but look at what happened to Mcllroy at the US Open a couple weeks ago. Prime Tiger would not have missed 2 short putts like that to close out a major. Handling pressure successfully is part of the package for elite athletes. -

I concur. Not turning the ball over is an important aspect of the job. Fumbles should be added as well. Looking at both guys’ career stats in that area makes this thread even sillier. -

It’s always a losing effort to insert Lamar on your side of a debate. But let’s go with it. Lamar and Allen are view similarly in terms of a dual threat qb etc. So what does that say that Lamar has 2 MVPs and Allen has 0? It means squat because Allen is the much better passer and that’s the ultimate indicator for a qb. Not running ability. Allen is a much better qb than Lamar and it has nothing to do with his running or hurdling abilities. -

They don’t. What they are is a more important stat for quarterbacks. It’s the quarterback’s job to pass the ball not run the ball. Be a field general and distribute the ball. It’s probably why qb’s get paid the most money. To pass not run. -

Yeah because Mahomes only started one game his rookie year. There are a lot of records that Mahomes holds that has never been done in the NFL. Again, what we’re doing here is jumping through hoops to justify our guy is better when the collective football world thinks otherwise. It’s real little bro energy and completely unnecessary. -

Probably not. But blowing 38-10 2nd half playoffs lead is right in his wheelhouse. What a clutch coach.
