What a crappy country this is where it takes a whole week to get power on after the worst natural disaster in our history. I feel so much shame. /sarcasm

Evacuations now being forced
SilverNRed replied to Dan Gross's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
You know, you just know, this is going to result in people complaining about the government using heavy-handed tactics to harass the downtrodden citizens of NO. I expect the race and class cards to come into play. We were already hearing that last week when the National Guard finally got in and restored order. Guess they weren't being polite enough for some of the people they were rescuing. -
It was something I read about the SD having a very unorthodox construction whereby the walls, in essence, "hang" from the roof. The building really wasn't designed to withstand 175 mph winds. Luckily, the storm died down a bit last Sunday night. Had the hurricane been even stronger, though, I don't think the city's plan would have changed much and they'd have continued herding people into a building that was not built to withstand a storm that could collapse it. Imagine 40,000 people in a building and it collapses. It could have happened.

You're right. She did give birth to a person about a 100x more honorable and noble than herself, so she shouldn't actually be asked to explain the completely indefensible accusations she makes. I find it hilarious that you don't even want to touch the actual things she says and hold up the CNN version of her life story instead. "She lost her son; she's a hero." MMM HMM. No, let's not. Pat Robertson has nothing to do with me. Nice try at the deflection, though.

Here you go, smart guy. Nah, she's not insane.... How embarassing for you.
-
How stupid are you? Have you ever heard Cindy Sheehan speak? For all the coverage she got, there was little emphasis on the actual things she said. "President Bush murdered my son." "My son died for Israel." "President Bush's environmental policies caused Hurrican Katrina" (pretty sure that was Monday before the Bush bashers decided the response was more important to emphasis as part of their daily catharsis). Do you agree with Cindy Sheehan or do you just think it's important to defend her because the enemy of your enemy is your friend?

Don't forget that Gov. Blanco needed those extra 24 hours to make a decision after everything was already going to hell. At least, that's according to Mayor Nagin, who strikes me as the type of politician who would gladly say anything to cover his own ass.

The funniest part of the camera crew catching those two cops looting Wal-Mart was when the one looked into the camera and dead-panned "I'm just here to stop the looting" and then continued looting herself. Hope those couple of pairs of shoes from Wal-Mart were worth it, ladies. -

The coverage has been horrible. I'd say I've never seen the news agencies do a worse job. There has been little relevant information passed along. Urban legends have been reported as fact. "On the ground" reporters look like they're trying to win Oscars. People at the news desk aren't there to editorialize but it's basically the norm. CNN just spent 10 minutes interviewing some woman who thinks NBC was wrong for editing out Kanye West's crazy, race-baiting rant on last Friday's west coast broadcast of a charity telethon. Some loon from the LA Times thinks he was somehow "disenfranchised" by that. No doubt. -
Cindy Sheehan isn't someone's mother, she's Cindy Sheehan! I don't judge Casey Sheehan by the brainless things his insane mom says. I only use Cindy Sheehan's statements to judge Cindy Sheehan. Cindy Sheehan also isn't over 80 years old! How many people that age make insightful and relavent comments? I was raised to cut old people some slack. Maybe you weren't? Not really. He had a lot of nasty things to say (that I thought were funny) but I doubt it changed anyone's mind. I do remember cheering him for making Chris Matthews crap his pants on his own show, but that was because he finally called him on the BS he pulls where he asks someone a question and interupts them mid-answer so he can look like he's got them on their heels. Maybe it's just bad memory day at the Wal-mart you're shopping at there, pal.

I haven't read all this crap, but has anyone suggested that there are certain things not worth investigating? And why? I'd be in favor of investigating everything. The only problem is that there are a lot of newspapers that made their minds up a long time ago before investigating anything. -
Be prepared to add that one to the already huge list of urban legends about this disaster. The dimwit who said stranded "African Americans" were being forced to eat the dead has supposedly retracted that claim. One down. About 10,000,000 to go.
-
It's always a good idea to judge people based on the nutty things their 80+ year old relatives say.

Link According to Penn, he rescued a lot of "drowning people." Oh no, accused by who? The world according to Sean Penn. And add another one to the long list of urban legends (not from Penn): Not sure if that'll turn out to be another BS story or just another example of the lousy NOPD. Neither would surprise me.

Before the hurrican hit, I posted that I was worried the SuperDome wouldn't even be able to withstand Katrina should it hit NO directly as a Cat 5. Imagine that building collapsing on the thousands of people inside. It was closer to happening than you think.

As CTM pointed out, Nagin has blamed everyone short of Elvis for the problems he created. Idiots will listen to him and think he's a hero even though he's as guilty, if not more guilty, than anyone for the disaster. When your disaster plan includes the line "come up with a better plan later," you've got problems. And, again, implying that Nagin's rants have somehow sped things up is like me going outside my house at 8pm, screaming about how hot it is, and trying to take credit when the sun goes down.

This just in: Now they're blaming Elvis too. -
CNN Interview Make of that what you will. EDIT: If you read the second to last thing Mayor Nagin says, he either doesn't know what the word "abdicate" means or maybe made a really regretful Freudian slip. Abdicate He probably wanted to advocate a clear chain of command.

Newer parks are designed so that all seats, even those farther up the baselines, still face the infield. Pilot Field, unfortunately, was built right before this thinking took hold and seats along the first and third base lines have a line of vision perpendicular to those lines. So if you sit really far up the first base line and you look straight ahead while in your seat, you see the right fielder and not the pitcher. Newer stadiums have this figured out and sitting anywhere gives you a good view. I'll try to find pictures. EDIT: Here, check out Petco Park. You can sort of see that the seats curl more around the infield than they do in older parks. So it's easier to watch every pitch. I think this is what he's talking about. That said, Dunn Tire Park (formerly Pilot Field) is a nice AAA ballpark, though, and you'll have a great time there. My favorite major league parks are in Pittsburgh and Cleveland. Those are both amazing experiences.

Like the Coldplay analysis; LOVE the Yin Yang Twins analysis. Even though that song is disturbing as hell - I still like it. Just once I'd like to date a girl slutty enough that I could say that stuff to her.......

Has anyone heard from CajunBillsBacker?
SilverNRed replied to Mike32282's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Good rule for any situation is never assume the worst. You should plan for the worst if necessary but don't assume everything's gone to hell when we really don't have any reason to think he's not OK at this point. Thoughts and prayers; he'll be fine. -
Huh?
