I do not recall that the Sr. Committee has ever considered Cookie. Cookie was amazing but he retired before the AFL-NFL merger and did not play in the NFL. There are other "AFL only" players that would be considered just as deserving as Cookie. One being Tom Sestak, the leader of the Buffalo defense in their championship years. He too is on the All Time AFL Team. Players on the All Time AFL team are honored in Canton, There is a very nice AFL exhibit there, so Cookie and Sestak and all the other AFL stars have a presence there. Billy Shaw is the only player ever inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame without ever playing in the NFL. Cookie did turn down the CFL HoF. A typical thing for Cookie to do. My opinion ... CFL players should not be admitted into the AFL HoF. It is a different game and 99% of the players in that league could not make todays NFL. The Stadium Wall at "The Ralph" should definitely inlcude Cookie and Lou Saban. Ralph was very upset with Saban after he quit the second time. Apparently Ralph can hold a grudge. It is a horrible shame that Lou has passed away with being honored. I do not know why Cookie is not honored, could be Ralph again?

CNNSI Don Banks first round mock
Bob in STL replied to bigbillsfan12's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Hope not. Especially if McClain and Bulaga are on the board. -
Thankfully numbers alone don't cut. Reed was the better player. He played outdoors and that effects his numbers some. One of the writers in St. Louis, who is voting member, said that Reed was the best slot receiver EVER, and that his YAC numbers are second only to Rice. Carter is known to be a me first guy.

I like your posts. This one reinforces the fact that we have too many needs to adequately address in one draft. Hopefully we can fill a few holes via free agency. The change to a 3-4 does not sound like a good idea given that our current roster has so few players in the front 7 that can play it. Maybe that is something the Bills can do the following year while stockpiling some 3-4 talent this year?

One glaring need that everyone is overlooking

Actually WR is one of the better stories in Bills history. On the positive side we picked up Lofton, a HOF guy, from waivers. Tasker was a waiver pick up. We traded for Rashad and for Frank Lewis. Billy Brooks was a decent FA pick up. We have drafted some greats too like Jerry Butler, Eric Moulds, JD Hill, Bobby Chandler, Don Bebee, Lee Evans, Marlin Briscoe and Haven Moses. Heck, throw in Glenn Bass was Elbert Dubenion too. Offensive Gaurd is another strong area. Billy Shaw and Joe D are in the HoF. Jim Ritcher and Rueben Brown were great. Reggie McKenzie too. -

They may be all over the map but finding all those HoF guys is indeed the tough part. The Bills have 1 (Reed) in 50 years of existence. There are many 1st and 2nd round busts at WR. Intelligence is key in todays game because, as you said, passing has become the focus and WRs are in demand and defenses are complex. Which lends credence to my statement that is it easier to find a good RB than a good WR in today's game. -
Nice to dream but with a cap they did not spend beyond the cash-to-cap level. Why would they go beyond ? Ask Danny Synder how buying that championship is working out. I would be happy with 1 big name player (maybe someone that can help us transition to 3-4) and 5 mid-tier solid, veterans to shore up the many, many holes on this team.

First time I have ever heard this claim. I would say RB is much easier. WR is actually a difficult position to fill. Many early round picks go bust or take years to develop because they cannot read defensive coverages and learn the complex offenses. -
Who do you want to start at QB in 2010?
Bob in STL replied to Cotton Fitzsimmons's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yes, I saw that one. The biggest things I like about Fitz is leadership, guts, and willingness to make plays like that. Too bad his arm is not any better. -

Let see here, in no particular order we need the following: QB, Left OT, a giant run stuffing Nose Tackle, DE's that can play a 3-4, Linebackers that can run and tackle, a backup RB to replace Lynch, and WRs to replace TO and Josh Reed. Buddy better hit the Free Agent market hard because this list will take 3 drafts to fill. Open the wallet Ralph. -

You really dissed Elbert "Golden Wheels" Dubenion by giving his name to Fitz. -
Look at what's happend to that nice kid that came to Buffalo with his Mama? What a waste. I would take a 2 in a heartbeat; or trade straight up for a known player that could us somewhere. More tough choices for Buddy and Chan. My opinion has consistently been to keep him and have two solid RBs. This is the first I have heard that he is not liked in the locker room. Doesn't surprise me though. Another "character guy" that really isn't.

Bills will be making a major move at QB
Bob in STL replied to Albany,n.y.'s topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You make good points but I think Brohm needs a shot. Farve, Testeverde and many others had rough starts in the NFL. I can see us going into camp with Edwards, Fitz, Brohm and a rookie. If we pick up a veteran FA then I would think Edwards or Fitz is out. Brohm is still an unknown. I am glad we have Gailey trying to figure this out rather than a first year HC with no experience. This is a big problem and it has been since Kelly left. -

Philly would probably jump at Lynch and a 2nd. I think that is a bad deal for Buffalo. Buffalo should NOT trade any picks in the top 4. McNabb's leadership has always been in question. Most of the Eagles players want him out. I prefer to pass on him and draft a QB. We can maybe pick up a Pennington-type of vet to help groom a rookie. -
I hope we don't delve too deep into free agency
Bob in STL replied to Adam's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
We should be able to bring in some mid-tier players that can help and not hit our salary structure too hard. If we are really going to play a 3-4 we better find a decent NT and we should get a FA and draft someone just fopr that. I don't see anyone on our roster to play that position. -
Good points by you for sure, and on top of all that is a fan base that would rather follow the Gators.

The housing bust is not the real problem with the Jags. In your example those houses are only worth $150K if you sell them. If you stay put you ride out the market. Now, if you are so heavily leveraged and can't make the payment .. then you get killed. The issue with Jax is that it is college football country. People would rather go to Gainesvile and watch the Gators then spend $ on the Jags. Expanding to Jax was always a curious choice IMO.

Does the move to the 3-4

You know? Rarron Shrobel! -
Why is it people were OK with signing a head coach with no head coaching experience (Frazier, Grimm, Shotty-Jr, Rivera, etc.) yet they complain about position coaches from college or first time coordinators? I like what is happening with Buddy and Chan so far. Very pleased with the new Asst GM as it looks like they are addressing the vacancy from John Guy and planting seeds for the future. Long way to go. It is really all about bringing in good players. I hope Buddy and Chan can keep Russ and Ralph out of the football side of things.

So you want to start two rookie tackles AND a rookie center AND a rookie Guard? This just one season after we started two rookie gaurds and a LT that played one game in entire career before the season ever started? On top of that you want to bench one of last years rookie gaurds for Simmons - a seventh round project? WOW!! Did you go to the Dick Jauron & Russ Brandon School of Footabl? I agree that we need to draft more lineman and I sure do want to see us grab an OT in the first few rounds but I expect to see both Levitre and Wood (if healthy) starting again next season. I also think Hangartner will be the center unless Incognito is re-signed and pushes Wood to center. Dont forget about Butler or Bell at tackle.

James Hardy and Shawn Nelson

I heard TO say that. And that equates to how many catches? -
James Hardy and Shawn Nelson
Bob in STL replied to HumbleAndHungry's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Hardy Schmardy. He simply does not work hard and he does not remember the plays or the hot reads. Same issues with him now as BEFORE the draft. Chambers is done. I would rather give reps to Stevie Johnson. Nelson looks like a keeper. -
Come on. Marv was a coach not a reluctant GM. He never wanted that job and he left it early.
