A Bills Team That Could Compete
Bob in STL replied to Rob's House's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Great research. "some website made up some stat"? I though he was decent last season. Not great but decent. Consider that he but played inbetween two rookies and after Wood went down he played next to McKinney, then a semi-retired Simmons, and the Incognito. Do you think that may have had something to do with it? -
What Free Agent Would Come To Buffalo?
Bob in STL replied to box0life's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Uughh. Another why would anyone come to Buffalo thread. Can you help us out? Take a years supply of chicken wings and beef on weck, head on up to Canada, and see if you can find the next Cookie Gilcrest. -

Show a link or some facts. -
You should apply for the "director to the assistant to the GM" or some sort of position at OBD. I don't know how your picks work out but I amazed at the depth and breadth of your research !!

Let's Face Facts, Shall We?

Part of the problem since Burtler left is too much change. Sooner or later Ralph has to hit it right and find someone that can run a football team. I stick with them but it is difficult at times. Jauron just about wore me down. I will never forget his bizzare game management issues and the review flag that he could not get onto the field in time. -
Fixed.

A Bills Team That Could Compete

Fitz was our best QB last you and you dumped him. If Gailey can straighten out Edwards we might have some improvement from last year Incognito is not on the roster. A rookie LT is bound to have trials and tribulations. As a unit the OL could get better if Wood is healthy and Levitre improves and the new rookie tackle can play. Tackle is still scary. What about Lynch? Jackson is going to need some help from someone. What about a fullback and TE? We need some improvement here because our WR's look to be weak (lost Reed and Owens). -
Let's Face Facts, Shall We?

Someday we will bask in the glory of a Super Bowl win! To be honest, my sons like the football trips just to see their family. They often wonder how we could be so dedicated to this team after all the failures. At least their learning about loyalty and tradition. -
Good update. I agree that Whitner and Kelsay are marketable and tradeable. I doubt anyone will trade for McCargo, everyone knows he is most likely a mid summer cut. Parish maybe we can get something?

We have not been good at keeping our own players since John Butler left. That is why we waste first round picks on cornerbacks and running backs every 3 years on average. We change coaches and coordinators way too often, that is why good players are allowed to leave. Lots of churn and no progress.

Over the past ten seasons which NFL teams

Only this year matters. You can't fix the past. Right now we are 9 from the bottom, maybe even worse. -

It is remarkable but what are the choices for real fans? Whether they suck or not I am not going to switch teams. I am still going to make two trips to Buffalo with my sons and attend the games with my brothers and their kids. That is what we do win or lose. Tailgate, have fun, watch the games, and quite often walk out of the stadium shaking our heads in disbelief. My youngest son got to experience the agony after the Dallas Monday Night game, then repeated it against Cleveland last year. I know he is a real Bills fan now. -
Come on now, cutting Whitner right now would be stupid. Everyone wants to see Nix make a significant move but first lets rewind back to the last GM change with Levy/Jauron. Levy came into free agency guns blazing and he looked at lots of players and made some big signings right away. Everyone was excited about his moves but now looking at the aftermath they were not the kind of moves that good teams make. 1. We signed Robert Royal on day one - I think it is safe to say he did not make a positive impact. Not a huge gain or loss here but hey, we signed someone on day one. Yahoo. 2. We signed Derrick Dockery, an average guard, to the largest (at that time) Bills contract ever. He turns out to play at a slightly average level and for huge money. We give up big money for Dockery and later on have no money for Clements - one of our own. Clements leaves and we get to spend another 1st rounder on a CB. Good teams (Indy, Pttsburgh, New England) do the opposite, they sign their best players when they are still in their prime and the don't pay big $$ for FA's. 3. We sign Langston Walker, a so-so RT on the worst OL in football, to a huge contract. Then later we flub negotiations with our Pro Bowl LT while still grossly overpaying for Walker and Dockery. I know I have the benefit of hindsight here but my point is maybe it is better that Nix does proceed with caution.

Ouch. Make him stop please. These facts just hurt. And we traded up to get him and paid him first round money.

I always enjoy your posts. 1. Concur, that there is not much help with this years free agent crop. Still, we need to bring in some veterans with front seven experience playing in a 3-4. There are some there (Foote, Jarvis, to name a few). We also need veteran depth at on the OL. Right now we are faced with drafting and starting a rookie at LT and maybe Meredith at RT. I see Bell as a back up. We really need a legitimate veteran OT on this roster. Not a Chambers or Scott but someone that has played at a respectable level and can help out. 2. This draft has lots of OT prospects and most experts do indeed see Bulaga as a LT. Same with Okung and Davis. Two if these three could be there at #9. 3. The Levy/ Jauron regime was lousy yet somehow we managed to win 7 games per season with Dick Jauron at the helm and a continous change at offensive coordinator. Maybe we are closer than everyone thinks? Nix says we are. 4. Trade bait - Whitner is much better than given credit for on these boards. I did not want to draft a safety with his pick but his biggest crime is when he was drafted, not his play. Fewell defends his play and compliments his versatility. He seems to want to win and he takes ownership. Since we appear to be deep at safety maybe we can move him for a veteran OT? 5. I would love to see McClain on our team. McClain or an OT at #9 is a tough choice but in the long run McClain might be a better pick. The mishandling of Peters is still haunting us. 6. I too am glad to see Nix, Gailey and Whaley at the controls. Things just have to get better. -
1. You don't have Wendling anymore. 2. Trade Marshawn for what? --- A second? A fourth? A bag of tape? 3. Sign LT for what? 4. Search for teams to trade down? Teams will not usually trade up to #9 until draft day when they can see the board. By searching now you show your cards and help teams that draft just after you. 5. Why trade up when you just traded down to get more picks? I hope your name is not Buddy nix.

Could the Bills be considering trading down?

Which two big tackles are you referring too? Okung and who? The second tackle is debatable to me. While we have more intense needs at other postions such as OT, I would love to replace Poz or Mitchell with McClain any day. McClain is a guy that I think could be an impact player. More so than any NT or OT that falls to us at #9. That is just my opionion as a fan but if I had the choice between McClain, and OTs Bulaga and Davis, I just might pick McClain. Since we have no chance of getting a starting Left OT in free agency I suspect we will pick Bulaga or Davis. We may regret not taking McCalin if he is on the board, but we cannot go into camp with Bell and Meredith as our left OT options. -

Me too. I don't post during the season too often. Too emotional. I do like reading the posts though. There are some good ones. -
I pick Williams all the way but he will NOT be there in round two. Cody could be there. He has the physical tools to be a solid two down NT ... but ... he is not known as a highly motivated player at this point (hopefully he is not another McCargo).

It is hard to find a trading partner. There has to be someone on the board at #9 that is coveted. Now if Clausen is there maybe someone will want to move up and trade with us. Otherwise all teams are thinking the same thing, lots of players on the board with similar grades between 9 and 20. -
He showed one glimpse of promise for a while but that a few years ago. He just doesn't move well and being a one gap DT makes him a long shot to even make this team.
