RD4, Pick #109: CB Ross Cockrell - Duke University

Every team takes a corner every year. This is a passing league. -
WR Stevie Johnson traded to San Francisco 49ers
Bob in STL replied to FluffHead's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Uniquely talented to run routes in front of the first down markers on 3rd down, to not stretch the field, to drop TD passes, and to perform asinine celebrations against the coaches direction. A fourth rounder (conditional 3rd) is great value for an average receiver with his mileage. Especially being a salary cap dump. Watkins has the potential to be a difference maker, a game changer. We already know what Stevie is; he is a decent possession receiver. He is a number 2 or 3 on most teams. I am excited to see what Watkins can do. -
He looks like a mediocre player. He would be a distraction and from all accounts lacks the mental toughness we need to instill on this roister. I think he will have a hard time gaining acceptance in any locker room.

James Harris - our QB from 1969-1972
Bob in STL replied to major's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Well I was around and sure do not recall any of this. Saban had issues with lots of players both black and white. Harris had a cannon for an arm and little else. He lacked the experience to make a judgement on him as a Bill. This was back in the days when QBs took a time to develop. They drafted Joe Ferguson the next year let him hand off to OJ. -
I was watching the Bills practice during camp at Fredonia back in 1990 or 91. After the practice the players would sign autographs and fans where pile up and pushing to get one. I had a three year old and a one year old in a stroller. I watch from a distance as I pondered if we should penetrate the crowd. Andre Reed looked straight at us and then drove his golf cart out of the crowd and over to us. He signed autographs and talked and he really seemed to like the little kids. Within a few minutes he was buried again with people but I will always remember what a nice guy he was. The only other autograph I got that day was Phil Hansen. Phil was walking across the field alone, apparently unnoticed by the crowd, so we were able to walk up to him without a problem. Two of my all time favorite Bills. Andre Reed geatly deserves this honor.

Tom Donahoe- was he really that bad???!
Bob in STL replied to major's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Tom got rid of some players we should have kept. He hired bad coaches. He could not find a QB. His drafts were poor. No one else hired him either .. what does that say? -
Joe D'Alessandris Appreciation Thread
Bob in STL replied to BuffaloBillsForever's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Joe D was excellent but who says he wanted to stay anyway? I think the loss of Levitre is bigger than most thought. Wood used to help Urbik last year. Now Wood has to help Legursky. That is compounding the problems but yes, Joe is a fine OL coach. -
Stevie is an interesting guy. Loved by most fans but a somewhat polarizing figure among the fans as well. Tough situation today, playing with the recent death of his mother. So props to him for hanigng with his team. My opinion matters not but I can see the new regime moving on after this season.

1) Stevie Johnson - no comment 2) Mario Williams - doing his job and playing well 3) EJ today - made progress 4) Branch - good depth, keep him. 5) Robert Woods - best WR on the team 6) when Marrone went for the 54 yarder - I was ok with it . 7) 8) Gilmore - nice interception, clutch play, finally 9) Summers - needs more touches instead of Choice 10) Pears - where is Hairston? 11) Legursky - Bum 12) Chandler - did his job 13) Kyle Williams - stud 14) draft slot is not going to matter, time to learn how to win 15) GO BILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For the record -- Manuel's rating today was 105.0
Bob in STL replied to dave mcbride's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This #1 and #2 stuff is for fans and sportswriters. I am not seeing Stevie draw double coverage. We are 2-0 in the games he missed. Don't be surprised to see the Bills draft a WR early. EJ had a god game after a poor start. Good to see more development from him. -
1). i don't think that Lindell handles the kickoffs. 2). Gilmore was slowed by injury, he is lookign better lately 3). Wood was lousy and he made BS excuses after the game. The guys next to him are making it hard for him to play well IMO. Urbik was platooned with someone in dreadlocks and Lugursky sucks. We really miss Levitre. 4). We need to draft a QB, yes. 5). McKelvin is just a stupid player. 6). EJ was betrayed by his line and his receivers 9). the coaches did not have the players ready ... again. 10). Byrd was MIA on the 80 yard run. He is just not good at run support. 11). Veteran made the biggest gaffes .. Stevie, Wood, McKelvin 12). This just in ... Stevie is not a number 1 13). Top five pick is possible .. .we might not win another one.

Agree and I quit reading right here. At least someone makes some sense. The guy is a rookie coach and doing and excellent job. Even a Bill hater like Dan Dierdorf could see the team is on the way up and playing hard. Will the rest of you guys name another coach that took a train wreck like the Bills and won anything with all rookies QB's like Manuel, Tuel and Lewis (who might as well be classified as a rookie).

Players play hurt every game. It is great to see the veterans out there laying it all out. No problem with a nicked up player playing unless he is hurting us or doing more damage to himself. That was not the situation today with Stevie.

Did the ST coach call for a returnable kick
Bob in STL replied to Beerball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
^ I will vouch for this. ^ His behavior was deplorable and nothing could make him happy today! He was bringing all this bad karma from the past onto my table. I held strong and with all fingers and toes crossed I willed us to victory. Have a great week Tom! We WON!!!!! Feel Good!!! YAHOO!!! Cheers, Bob -
Did the ST coach call for a returnable kick
Bob in STL replied to Beerball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I am not one to always point at the coach but there have been enough return coverage issues for one season already. Lane discipline is coachable. -
1) Aaron Williams played his ass off today and I for one appreciate this. Yes, he is playing well. 2) Dareus recorded 4 tackles and 2 assists, but imo he didn't play so well. He provided vey little push up the middle. Nope, several good run stuffs. I saw him being held a lot. We need better LBs. 3) Marrone is a horror show. I am sorry, but he is. Before the deuce at the half, he cost us 7 points. This is not the first time he has hurt us before the half. And really, are you looking at him? Does he not look lost? Please list coaches that you think are worse than him. Agree that he should have taken time off of the clock and get to the half with a 10 point lead on the road. Seems to be learning game managment or else he needs to rein in Hackett. On the positive side, I loved his intensity, his "talking" to the refs about the game and the calls, and his challenges are good. He is involved in the game. Too many past coaches sat there like stiffs. I like the fact the team is playing hard for him. 4) Mario is just great. Seriously, the man is GREAT!!!!! He took over this game and won us a divisional game on the road. This is what is supposed to happen with players on whom a team invests their most resources. It was wonderful to see this fantastic player play at such a high level, no? I hope it lasts. 5) If anybody wants to sing the praises of Gilmore, please do. That said, I loved what I saw from Robey!!! Gimore played hard and his coverage was mostly fine - while playing with a severe handicap he is still better than what we had. They are attacking him and he is doing fine. I saw him swinging his club without concern for further injury while trying hard to make a tackle. We have players on this team that do not play hurt. This kid will be very good, give him a break. Robey is looking like a nice nickel DB. 6) Kyle Williams recovered the fumble, but he was not all that impressive. I am thinking that the Bills gave up a bit too much up the middle. I don't know what his story is. Look at the LB play. Kiko is playing well but sometimes he gives up a lot on the run. He is bit light. He was manhandled one-on-one for a few big runs up the gut. I hope he can gain some weight and still play fast. 7) 8) Robert Woods didn't have great numbers today, but I am just SO impressed with this kid. I feel like he is always helping this football team. Meh. We will see. I like him so far. 10) Granted, Choice and SJ had brutal drops in the first quarter, but both missed passes appeared to have been forced and lacking in touch. Third string QB, still gaining experience. 11) There should have been more called running plays to Lewis. Period. I won't back down on this and I blame Marrone. ??? Really? And if we lose Lewis we get Tuel. 12) Kudos to McKelvin for playing what I think was the best game of his life. He played well and I am happy he avoided some close PI situations. 13) I think that there should have been called running plays to Lewis. 14) Congrats to my Bills friends!!!!!!! Thanks and Cheers Bill! 15) GO BILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes!

I don't think so. Attention to detail is not his strength at all. I love it! I go to New England twice a month on business and I have to say I have never seen such spoiled and arrogant fans in my life. I have been a lot of places too.

Mario Williams deserves props
Bob in STL replied to Captain Hindsight's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Team sport - lots of contributors. Props to Wiliams for the big plays when needed. -
That was a great quote indded. Bum was a good coach and his Oiler teams of 70's were very good. I also think his son Wade was a good football coach, especially on the defensive side of the game. Classy guy. RIP Bum.

Good post. The Spiller pick and Lynch trade was also about what happens when you change regimes. Out with the old, in with the new. We drafted Spiller #1. Lynch had character issues. No way were we tying up more big $$ in the RB position. On top of that Fred Jackson was looking very good and brought in the kind of chartacter that teams like. In hindsight we did not get enough but Lynch was a timebomb that could have regressed further in the wrong environment. A healthy Hairston may end as a solid starting RT someday. Time will tell.

Miami Herald's keys to the game
Bob in STL replied to Kemp2Warlick's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
^ This should be a tru statement if we can do it. Unfortunately, we have given up 30+ points in each of our roads games. An intangible today could be special teams. The punt coverage is looking very poor for Buffalo so far. The return game is also lacking compared to recent past. -
Are the Bills better than the Jets? If so, why?
Bob in STL replied to gjv001's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Until we can consistently beat them the answer is no. In recent seasons the Jets have been far more physical and have pushed us around a bit. I hate to say it but so have the Dolphins. Now, do we have a better talent base? ... maybe so or maybe the tide is turning. Lets prove it on the field sometime soon.
