Mike Clay's roster talent evaluation all 32 teams ranked
JohnNord replied to Reed83HOF's topic in The Stadium Wall
This is a noble attempt to try to quantify the strength of NFL rosters but it is so hard to do. First off, certain positions are equal and some should be greatly weighted - ie QB. So you can’t take much away from the overall team scores. -
How did the Patriots maintain a top team for 17 years?
JohnNord replied to Success's topic in The Stadium Wall
I think the biggest eraser of any issue was Tom Brady himself. Yes he took a lot less which helped with the roster, but he was so good and with the exception of a Gronk and Moss for a one-season, he never really had top-tier talent to throw to. Good point about the OL. Many have said OL Coach Dante Scarnecchia was an unsung hero. Again though, when your QB can process the game so quickly… Belichck was very good at finding guys to run his system on defense. It seemed that he could always find some lowly FA on the scrap heap and plug him in to play well on defense. -
Your typical bottom of the roster TE. I thought there was some hope for him early in his career but he never really improved much as a pass catcher or blocker

Will DeAndre Hopkins be available this offseason?
JohnNord replied to NeverOutNick's topic in The Stadium Wall
Don’t look now… but it appears DeAndre is in Buffalo and headed to Duff’s! 🤣 😱😱😱😱 -
Sal Cappacio does a sit down with Cover ! guys,...interesting!

I’ve been meaning to check this show out. These two used to work in the Buffalo front office as mid-level managers. The show is heavily geared toward nostalgia and has had on former Bills as guests. -
Taiwan is currently a free agent so it doesn’t benefit him to cover for the coaches as you suggest
-
Not what Taiwan said… he doesn’t blame play calling. He said it comes down to the players
-
No…Mr. WEO said the loss was 100% on coaching.
-
But I was told the loss was “100% on coaching” by multiple members of this forum.

Should we trade Ed Oliver?
JohnNord replied to Floridagatorsbuffalobills's topic in The Stadium Wall
This rumor started on Twitter because Eddie posted highlights from his game against Chicago on his Instagram story. Apparently the jump from 27 to 9 would roughly equate his value. I wouldn’t buy into these rumors: -
Should we trade Ed Oliver?
JohnNord replied to Floridagatorsbuffalobills's topic in The Stadium Wall
Questioning Oliver’s production over the past 4 years given his draft status is a very logical take. -
If Jones plays the way he did last season, my guess is that he re-signs at some point next year before Free Agency - if not sooner. The rest is up in the air. Oliver will not be re-signed. The Bills would be wise to trade him to for a mid round draft pick to get the $10M off the books and then either make a trade or sign a FA like Poona. Mark it down…I will not be shocked to see the Bills draft DT and LB in rounds 1 and 2

I’ll be looking forward to those ESPN stories about the courageous return of Tedy Buschi to the NFL…
-
He wasn’t very good last season but I guess there are worse players you could sign as back-up tackles. I’m thinking Tommy Doyle is going to challenge for his roster spot
-
Indy that was fast…glad to see him catch on with another team
-
He’s likely good enough for a backup position but based on what he’s said publicly it seems like he is steadfast on starting. He’s not good enough to deal with that headache

JohnNord replied to NeverOutNick's topic in The Stadium Wall
Not really…. I remember he reported that Shaq Lawson was signing with the Bills shortly before the playoffs in 2021. No other media member wouldn’t comment on it - likely because it wasn’t happening…and it didn’t. Take anything that Bills bloggers report with a grain of sand Zero -
The Cincy game & its affect on how we view the team
JohnNord replied to Success's topic in The Stadium Wall
I don’t necessarily disagree it was an ass kicking in all phases… but this debate started over the “it’s all coaching” statement. To say that is flat out scapegoating. You are holding coaches responsible for high first round draft picks getting physically manhandled in the run game against a backup OL. That has nothing to do with coaching and it’s more about talent not executing all and getting their ass kicked. Gap integrity is all on the players. There was little against Cincinnati - that’s on the players. -

You’re not understanding my point. I’m not saying that the coaches are without blame. I am saying that EVERYONE deserves their blame. You want to try to say that everything is on coaching - which is very much a flawed argument. The reason I bring up Edmunds and Oliver is a perfect example of this. These are two players that you would not expect to get dominated by backup lineman. Yet…watch the tape. By trying to scapegoat the entire loss on coaching, you are giving a pass to several players who just simply played small in big moments. Most people that aren’t ultra emotional about the loss and can think pragmatically understand why your argument and mind self is tremendously flawed. -

So you still aren’t answering my question… I’m simply pointing out that some of the issues on defense had absolutely nothing to scheme or play calling - players like Edmunds and Oliver (among others) just got their asses kicked. No matter how hard you want to try - you can’t blame coaching for this. This destroys your entire argument which you could properly defend in the first place. L -
The Cincy game & its affect on how we view the team
JohnNord replied to Success's topic in The Stadium Wall
The word people are looking for is disjointed on offense. You’d see moments where the bigger shot plays were there, but they would follow up with turnovers or 3 and outs to allow the other team back in the game. The factors you mentioned are there but I also don’t think you saw very much scheming or creativity in playcalling from Dorsey. Biggest example was the lack of a short passing game an an answer to aggressive defenses. -

You could say they same thing Kansas City. How many Super Bowl teams failed to make the playoffs the next season? It doesn’t mean it will happen. -

This I agree with. It was an organizational failure across the board but to say “100% on coaching” is pure scapegoating. I think the bland offensive and defensive game plans definitely were a big part of the problem but so were players who just got beat and dominated physically - namely Edmunds, Oliver, and probably out entire defensive and offensive line. That part is less about scheme and more about getting your ass kicked. But some fans don’t want to recognize this. Uh huh…. The Bills might actually be the first team to go 13-3 to 0-17. It could happen -
Some good points Hapless, but I don’t think the situation is as one sided as you do. They may very well keep Neal, largely because of his special teams ability, though I don’t think it’s a given. You mentioned that he’s the Bills “dime back and Taron Johnson’s backup at nickel.” He is the dime back but the Bills rarely play Dime and stick with their base Nickel defense. Neal doesn’t play many defensive snaps though, because he’s very poor at coverage. Look no further than the game against Kansas City this fall. It was thought that Neal, a player who I believe has boxing experience, could be physical and“beat up” a talented Tight End like Travis Kelce. The problem is he’s not very good at coverage and a few of his blunder turned into big plays including a long JuJu touchdown. He didn’t play many defensive snaps after that moment. So it all comes down to whether Buffalo wants to $2 million on the cap for a ST’s player or to reallocate If you play Neal on defense more often, get used to this:
