Who knows what five or ten years will bring Valerie the Android what she can do... What Valerie will be able to do: * Muscle movements equal to a person. * Understand spoken commands (in several languages) * Speak to you in English (or several other languages) * Remember previous conversations with you. * Remember a daily list of chores to be done. * Perform household chores such as: o Cleaning o Clearing the table o Changing light bulbs o Doing laundry o Dusting o Lift and carry things up to 50 pounds o Picking up things o Putting things away o Painting o Setting the table o Sweeping o Washing dishes o Vaccuuming * Access the internet to do such things as: o Check stock prices o Check sports scores o Find information for you o Book plane tickets for you o Find addresses or phone numbers o Find directions * Call police in an emergency. * Call the fire department in case of fire. * Dress or undress herself. * Have a sense of touch all over like people do.
  5. Ethics for Robots “I would hope they would always be subordinate,” said Brian Aldiss, the science fiction writer. “But one will no doubt come to rely on them deeply.” Aldiss’s short story Supertoys Last All Summer Long was the basis for the Steven Spielberg film AI, which addressed the subject of whether androids that have become as intelligent as humans should be denied equal rights. Other dilemmas may arrive sooner than we think, says Christensen. “People are going to be having sex with robots within five years,” he said. So should limits be set on the appearance, for example, of such robotic sex toys? The greatest danger, however, is likely to lie with robots that are able to learn from their “experiences”. As systems develop, robots are likely to have much more sophisticated self-learning mechanisms built into them and it may become impossible to predict exactly how they will behave. “My guess is that we’ll have conscious machines before 2020,” said Ian Pearson, futurologist-in-residence at BT. “If we put that in a robot, it’s an android. That is an enormous ethical change.” To critics who scoff that intelligent robots are a long way off, the roboticists easily riposte that machines can already exert surprising influence over our lives — think about the influence of the internet.
  6. Intermittent Explosive Disorder According to a report released June 5th in the Archives of General Psychiatry, researchers from the University of Chicago, Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School say more than 7% of Americans may require treatment for a condition known as "Intermittent Explosive Disorder," or IED. It's neither a propensity for spontaneous combustion nor anything a big bottle of Bean-o could solve. Rather, it's a condition described by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) as an impulse-control disorder that results in violent outbursts or "rages" that cause harm to others or property, and are "grossly out of proportion to the stressor." "It's kind of embarrassing, but anger isn't something that you think to bring up in a diagnosis," said Harvard's Ron Kessler, the report's lead author. "You tend to focus on sadness or moodiness. The fact is that what psychologists are trained to think of as a mental illness was historically defined over drinks and cigars by aggressive, middle-aged men." The scientists say they were shocked to find that there is such a large population of angry Americans. So, in line with our over-medicated ways, they are adding a new entry to the list of popular mental illnesses skulking on the underside of America's psyche—right between ADHD and restless leg syndrome. Age, race and socioeconomic status don't seem to be factors in predicting who suffers from IED—but gender does: The study found nearly twice as many men display symptoms than women.

  8. I have a black Denali and was told distilled vinigar is the best solution. Here is one outline: Water spots Water Spots The same water you use to bathe your car can also damage your car's paint. The spots and damage are caused by the minerals in the water. When water evaporates off of your car's paint, it leaves behind the trace elements it contains. Calcium and metals are the most damaging ingredients found in your tap water. Rainwater may contain damaging acids from air pollutants. Getting rid of water spots is easy if you chase after them. The best solution is to use a quick detailing spray after you wash, or as soon as you discover the spots (i.e., when your neighbor's sprinkler gets you). If the spots are allowed to dry and bake on, they will attach to and harden on your paint. When this happens, you need to use a mild acid to get them loose. Believe it or not, the best acid is also the least expensive and most available: a gallon jug of distilled white vinegar. Expert car detailers have known this secret for years. If you take your car to a pro, they will tell you about the "magic acid bath" and charge you $60 or more for the pleasure of smelling like a pickle. Save the $60. Put on some gloves and get to it. To give your car the magic acid bath, first wash your car with your normal car shampoo, rinse, and then use the distilled vinegar. Just wipe it on with a sponge, and rub it in. Do one section at a time. Let it sit 30 to 60 seconds, and then rinse. When you're done, wash the car again with shampoo, and then rinse. By the way, vinegar will remove your wax, so be prepared to re-wax your car after the vinegar treatment. Sprinklers showered this car with hard water. The car then sat in the sun for several days, causing the hard-water deposits to harden. Vinegar will remove the spots from the aluminum bumper, plastic taillights and rubber trim, but the paint will need to be polished and buffed with a buffer. If water spots are allowed to stay for more than a week or so, the minerals will etch the paint. In this case, using vinegar will remove the mineral spots, but the paint will have etched spots (dimples). It is necessary to use a polish or mild polishing compound to

  10. Ricky Answers Questions Are you having fun up here? "Can you clarify the question?" Are you having fun here playing football for the Argos? "I guess it depends on your definition of fun. When we use words we have definite definitions of what those words mean. That's what I've tried to clarify what you're saying by the word fun." So what is your version of fun compared to mine? "Fun is a word I really don't use in my vocabulary," he said. Are you enjoying life in Toronto? "I'm not not enjoying life in Toronto. I'm not miserable. I'm here to play football and I don't have a car, a place to live, so I just kind of walk around my dorm room in circles." - His first regular season game with Argo's is today at Roger's Centre against the Hamilton Tiger Cats at 3:00
  11. Youth Marriage For traditional ceremonial marriage, Colorado law sets the minimum age at 18, or 16 with parental or judicial approval. "It appears that Colorado has adopted the common-law age of consent for marriage as 14 for a male and 12 for a female, which existed under English common law," the ruling said. "Nevertheless, we need only hold here that a 15-year-old female may enter into a valid common-law marriage." The appeal was filed by Willis Rouse, 38, who is serving time for escape and a parole violation. He argued that he and the girl began living together in April 2002 and applied for a marriage license a year later. The girl had become legally independent by then, but her mother also consented to the marriage and accompanied the girl and Rouse to obtain a license, the ruling said.

  15. Supplemental Draft As for supplemental draft procedures, this is straight from the folks at NFL headquarters who would oversee such a draft: Each club’s draft position is weighted by assigning the weakest club the greatest number of lottery chances and the strongest club the fewest number. Team strength and weakness will be determined by the original order of the first round of the prior to the April draft and before any trades (i.e., the weakest club, which from the 2003 season is the San Diego Chargers, will have its name in the drawing 32 times, the next weakest 31 times, etc., until the Super Bowl winner, which would have its name in once). There is a three-step drawing process that works in the following order: 1. Teams that won six or fewer games in the prior regular season are placed together in a container and drawn to determine the initial arrangement of places in the selection order; 2. The remaining non-playoff teams are placed together in a container and drawn to determine their places following those determined in the first drawing; 3. Playoff teams are placed together in a container and drawn to determine the remaining places in the selection order.

  20. Gaming in Olympics NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - A mouse, keyboard and/or Xbox controller don't seem like the standard gear of an Olympic athlete, but Ted Owen wants to change that. Owen, who runs the Global Gaming League (GGL), a media company focused on the lifestyle and culture of gaming, is currently talking with the Chinese government in hopes of bringing competitive video gaming to the 2008 Games as a demonstration sport. Admittedly, it's an uphill battle. Even if you can look past the lack of physical skills necessary to play video games, the Olympics haven't had any sort of demonstration sport since 1992 - and Olympic experts say there has been no movement to bring them back. Owen, though, said he believes gaming's worldwide appeal - especially to a younger audience - could be the biggest boost to the Games since snowboarding. "People aren't watching [the Olympics] as much anymore," he argued. "You need to bring younger viewers back if you want to keep making money. To do that, you need to embrace non-traditional sports. They did it with snowboarding - and look how the popularity of that has surged in the Games. Video games deserve to be seen as a non-traditional sport. ... They would bring something to the Games that [that age group] engages in and everyone understands." Though gaming doesn't take much physical prowess (a quick glance at many of the most talented competitive gamers is confirmation enough), it does demand incredible hand-eye coordination - arguably as much as golf and tennis. -yikes

  24. Theismann on Ricky "This is a feeble excuse for the Toronto Argonauts to sell tickets," Theismann told Toronto's Fan 590 radio station. "I am embarrassed to have worn that 'A' on my helmet, to think that they would stoop to this level to sell tickets, to bring in someone who is not worthy of playing professional football." He has insulted professional football players, he has insulted professional football, he has been suspended from the National Football League, he doesn't want to play, he's going to a place where his value will be limited," Theismann continued. And it's a damn shame that the Toronto Argonauts would not show a lot more class and pass on somebody who has been a repeat drug offender. To me, it's an insult to guys who put on the uniform." "I don't ever want to be mentioned in the same breath as Ricky Williams as a football player," he said. "He's a disgrace to the game. The man doesn't deserve to play football."
