Levi Wallace against bigger, stronger receivers
WideNine replied to WideNine's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Well, we will see the next time he goes up against a bigger physical receiver who can high-point the ball. Just something to keep an eye on -
Miami is having a fire sale down there - Gesicki did not look too shabby - seriously though pretty sure he is not going anywhere. It is a bit early to give up on Knox or Sweeney, but we do need those reliable hands and Daboll has schemed him open so many times for the drive-killing drop. He has made some great catches too, but needs to be a more consistent target. He has a ways to go as a route runner too, but have to remember that Ol' Miss did not really have much of a passing tree for their TEs.

Levi Wallace against bigger, stronger receivers

He only goes like 175, but that does not tell the whole story. I am just not sure if being physical is his game or it may be that he is just more used to playing zone up to now. He plays off receivers a bit, is lanky, has deceptive recovery speed, and takes great angles - plenty of times QBs have thought there was something there that Wallace has been able to shut it down at the last second. He has only gotten better and is a good complimentary corner to White. I kind of knew starting this thread may start the chicken little comments, but I do think Preston was eating his lunch till that fumble and it made me wonder if the Bills have a similar situation how they respond - do they give Wallace another shot or do they match-up one of our safeties on him. Also thought I would move the conversation away from Allen for a bit of a refreshing look at other areas of the team. We also need a solution for backing up Milano - curious if Beane pulls the trigger before the deadline on the 29th. -

Jeez folks, can we not just talk about our players without hitting the all or nothing alarm bells. Never said Levi sucked, just that I saw something against larger more physical receivers that other teams that have those kind of receivers will look to exploit. Not every team has those receivers, and it does not mean that Wallace has not played well up to this point. -

Was not saying that Levi has not been solid for us, and has come up big in games, just that going up against bigger stronger receivers may be something he will struggle with as he likes to play off of receivers rather than having receivers come right at him and out-muscle him. Those dimes were just 50/50 jump balls and Levi was losing those to Williams. Just something to watch the next time he is matched up against a bigger more physical receiver - such as N'Keal who was out of the lineup last time we played NE. -

Frazier was saying in his presser this week that he was finally feeling confident and it was good to let Wallace handle man coverage as he has locked down that #2 corner role. And that it was nice not having to move White around and such....have to listen to it again. But he is like a generous 178 and Preston goes 215 or so, but he was getting pushed around, and man handled, screened, and out- jumped. It was a mismatch out there. -

I like Levi, but after watching him against Preston Williams who had a significant height and weight advantage, I think Frazier is going to have to rethink how he matches him up. You can bet that Beligoat noticed and with N'Keal healthy he will be looking to exploit that match-up. -
Allen IS hitting the proper benchmarks
WideNine replied to Mat68's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Truth, we do have a good defense, but the fact that Allen has led game-winning drives is the complimentary aspect of this team. Defense is ahead of the offense, but arguably (till this off-season) had the most investment. This last game the defense was crapping the bed a bit against a bad Miami team and needed the offense and special teams to gen points. The defense found a way to stop the mighty Fitz, and the offense and ST ponied up the points needed. Once again, complimentary football. Since our D is usually solid it is important that our STs and Offense not put them in bad situations and play to our team's strength. -
Just no. Reminds, me of us bleeding yards and points to Miami.

Not going to flame you, but I think Daboll outsmarts himself at times, so it is not all on your green QB with all of 17 games under his belt. There are times Allen does not see the open guy or his outlet option, he also gets a woody when he gets a cover 0 look and launches those passes into sub-orbit. But I also remember our team holding onto a slim lead with a lot of time on the clock and he calls 3 straight low-percentage passes to guys that were blanketed, this after our running game had been gashing them all day. So no time off the clock and our special teams has to punt it deep and our defense is forced to make a stop. Next series it was like Gore for 4, Gore for 9, Gore for 20, Gore for 1, Gore for 3, and then fake to Gore - Allen on a naked bootleg 1st down game over... we chewed up the clock. That is just one example. Daboll is not all bad and neither is Allen. Together they make a pretty decent combination, but both have room to grow.

A fire sale on pitchforks and torches... most of us have seen that play out for more than a few QBs here. I have more faith in Allen and this regime than I have had for others over the past decade and a half, but we will see. We ARE winning, and we are the only team that gave NE fits. Admittedly Allen had a rough 1st half, but he also was the only QB to march down the field against those guys to score a TD... resiliency after getting kicked in the sprinkler and the moxey to push your team to a win at the end of games; you cannot teach those.

You've been a Bills fan for too long if...

OMG the family had one of those, and the left side was a record player. I remember fighting with my older sister about what we were going to watch. My old man, sick of listening to us, kicked the TV out of frustration and it died with some sparks, smoke, and faint smell of ozone. Always the family smartass I turned to my sister and said, "OK, you can watch what you want". Thanks for the memories:) -
I think Jackson has had more shade thrown on him than Allen and I don't think he is Kaep V2 - throws a much better ball especially while on the move. I do think he does benefit from being in the right system with the right coach and that running QB's do have a shorter "life span" in the NFL, but success is success and he is getting wins so good for him. Not sure if Rosen is a broken toy or not, but definitely the opposite situation of being in the wrong systems at the wrong times. I think Mayfield is a good fit for the Browns, but I think he would have wore out his welcome here rather quickly - just my own opinion. ...and you are right that being an awesome dude only takes one so far as a QB; you have to perform.

I think many Buffalo fans feel like they can relate to Allen. His small town upbringing, his rocky road to the draft where he had to overcome a bit more personal adversity than most QBs that are groomed for D1 play from HS and end up on the NFL draft radar - turned down by so many colleges, having to spend time at a Jr. College before getting a shot at Wyoming,.... I think that is a story or something that has grown to a bit of a mythos around Allen that folks can likely more easily relate to than someone who was an exceptionally gifted athlete, who is groomed for a pro-sports future that unfolds as planned. Not saying that any of the other QBs could not have worked to build that relationship with fans. He is a likable character who quips, "one NY team" and sticks around over his bi-week to take in Sabre's and HS games. He has done a lot to endear himself to the community so I do hope it works out for the Bills and for him.

Playing NE's defense can skew that turnover metric - just ask the Jets.

Meanwhile....Tribisky (sp) is floundering
WideNine replied to John from Riverside's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Ok, just for starters, can you even tell if a QB won the freaking game he was supposed to win just looking at those numbers. -
He's got some work in that area, but there are times when a QB is not going to go thru all his progressions; like the red zone throw to Beasley. You have the defensive look and match-up you are looking for and have practiced against and you know where you are going with the ball. You still should not stare down that receiver, but its a work in progress.

It is because so much fuss was made of the Bills picking Allen and so many comparisons about how he was one of the worst QBs of that 2018 draft class. The national media taking every op to pump up or excuse the other QBs while throwing constant shade on Allen. Just yesterday while writing up the Dolphins game the reporter for NFL.com wrote that Allen was exciting and you never know if one of his passes was going to hit his receivers or a fan in the front row.... It is these things that drive the debates and comparisons, but it would be nice if eventually looking back on that 2018 draft class folks talk about it being a good one with Allen in that conversation. A ways to go before that, but that is my hope.
-
I think the difference is that Allen was turned down by just about every college and has always been told he sucks, yet he keeps believing. Has that inner something to tune it out and keep going. I do feel for this kid, but he needed to learn to just shhhhhh. No excuses when you get beat, just learn from it. The NYC press is going to be brutal.

Darnold will have PTSD every time he goes up against them. His will has been broken. -

Brady screaming, "He's right there!" The refs, "That's your center's butt". So satisfying to see them finally call him on that crap. -
What Looked Like a Billsy Loss Becomes a Patriotsy Win
WideNine replied to theRalph's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I knew this was a waste of my time, but I like to try to throw a bone to new folks just joining the Wall conversations. You seemed confused by Hyde's play as you stated "once again the defense bailed us out" after mentioning the Special Teams play. I was concerned that you did not know what Special Teams was vs Defense. That, and as this was probably the only game where the Defense was crapping the bed most of the game and had to have some help from the offense and Special Teams to seal the deal - hence, complimentary football. And now buh-bye you special-minded waste of my time. -
Is this the easiest schedule the Bills ever had?

We get NE twice every year, we deserve the kind of break most teams in other divisions enjoy. Not feeling guilty at all
