Sure, but let me first be clear that I thought Josh played very well overall. I graded him with an "A" performance and it wasn't on a curve. That said, here are the throws where I thought he had issues with accuracy beyond the acceptable norms (i.e. minor ball placement problems): 1st q (1:56): deep ball to Brown overthrown by 6-8 yards 1st q (1:49): under throw to Foster on the out pattern. The ball was catchable but given how open he was Josh has to do better on that one. 2nd 1 (14:15): Josh throws wide on the out to Knox who stretches to get one hand on it and the ball bounces off. Trent Green comments how Josh needs to learn when to put a little more touch on it to give his receivers a better chance. 3rd q (4:49): Josh misses Zay on the hot route in the slot throwing way behind him. 4th q (6:55): Josh misses Zay on the crossing pattern in the end zone. This one was catchable but like the throw to Foster it just wasn't good enough forcing Zay to lay out for it on a routine 10 yard throw from a clean pocket. So five inaccurate throws in thirty attempts for an accuracy% of 83.3% which based on last year is on the high side of average for an NFL QB according to Elias Sports Bureau. Like I said, he had a good game. I still disagree with posters claiming Josh's accuracy issues are no worse than your average QB. I think he's below average in that regard, but he's also above average when it comes to making jaw dropping plays. In the end, as long as the offense is able to finish off drives with TDs it won't matter that he gets a little wild a little more often than other QBs.

Not sure how I'd rank Allen, Jackson, and Darnold at this stage as they're all pretty close but I do think Baker is way ahead. He has the biggest floor and ceiling of those four. Downgrading him based on one lackluster half of preseason (he was reportedly great in camp and had a perfect QB rating in the only other preseason game he played in) and one regular season game after putting up 4000+ yards and 28 TDs as a rookie with little to no help on offense and with one of the worst coaching situations in recent memory...that just doesn't make any sense. Baker is a stud. I fully expect the Browns to make the playoffs and wouldn't be surprised to see him make the pro bowl this year. Allen looks like a stud too but he still has a ways to go.

I get the frustration but I think this is flawed logic. McD was hired only a few months before the draft. Beane wasn't even brought in until later that year. What was McD supposed to do? Let Whaley pick his QB of the future on his way out the door? Pick a QB with virtually no deep dive knowledge of the QB class or even his own team? I will admit that it turned out to be insanely bad luck that two all pro QB talents happened to go mid first round in the year we had the opportunity to take one of them. The question we should be asking ourselves is did McBeane make the right decision trading two 2nds, a 3rd, and Cordy Glenn to move up to take Josh when we could have just stood pat and taken Lamar Jackson who looks like a comparable talent. That's the one to keep an eye on going forward, not killing our first time head coach for trading back and gathering futures so he could re-stock the cupboard once he had a better idea of what he was working with.

Is Singletary Daboll’s secret weapon?
VW82 replied to Inigo Montoya's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This is a pretty close analogy. A good all around starter (Jackson, Gore) and a specialist (Spiller, Singletary) that performs well behind him in a limited role which only puts him positions to succeed. We ran 30 passing plays vs 34 running plays (7 of which were Allen rushes and many of those were scrambles on passing downs). In week one the split was 37 passes vs. 25 rushes (includng 10 Allen rushes/scrambles). I think people really underrate how important pass protection is at the running back position, and more specifically the knowledge of when to pass protect vs. when to present yourself as a target in the passing game, and the ability to run good routes while doing so. Frank Gore is excellent in the passing game; Jackson was too. Spiller was below average and it looks like Singletary might be as well. Clearly the coaching staff thinks so otherwise he'd be out there getting more touches instead of being limited to a change of pace, exclusive running down type back just like CJ was for us initially. -
Bills Snap Count vs the Giants
VW82 replied to Royale with Cheese's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I mentioned this after week one but it shouldn’t surprise anyone that Singletary’s snap count went down in favour of Gore. The discrepancy between those two in pass protection is glaring. Frank might be better than Fred Jackson. Watch Gore in JA’s sweep right for the TD. He’s basically playing FB. I wouldn’t go so far as say Singletary is a train wreck on passing plays but he’s definitely looked like a rookie so far (especially in preseason) in that regard. -
I don't understand this post. Josh had a really good game today -- can't we just leave it at that? 64% and 7.6 YPA are average for an NFL QB. He also has four TOVs through two games not counting the should-have-been-strip sack today and dropped pick and called back INT in game one. Josh had accuracy issues on several throws today just as he did in week one, and in each of the three preseason games too. It should be obvious to anyone who's watched him play he has intermittent problems with accuracy. Why do we need to bend the truth and pretend like that doesn't exist? There's more than enough to like about him already that we don't need to do that. I was thoroughly impressed with Allen's play today. It showed that he's improving and that he has a tonne of potential. It did not prove that everyone has been wrong all along about his various bugaboos.

I suspect that your improved behaviour was a big reason the family stuck around for this one. Being a well behaved Bills fan has been a tall order these last twenty years but it's an important part of the deal for our loved ones.

I don't think that streak is going to last much longer.

A Few Thoughts about the Giants game, in no particular order
VW82 replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
There was a lot to like from the offense today. Our D was far less impressive IMO vs. a Giants team that struggles to move the ball. I think it's telling that our three leading tacklers on the day were all DBs. Very interested to focus on Oliver and Edmunds on the re-watch to see what happened. I have a feeling I'm not going to like what I see. -
I thought he deserved an A. Some of the stuff he did today was Russell Wilson-esk. That play in the first q where he deeked out the rusher and then made an impossible throw on a dead run to Knox was jaw dropping. He had a few plays like that today. The big thing though was finishing off drives with TDs. Most of the incompletions were throwaways (and the correct decision) so anyone whining about completion percentage is missing the point. He still had some issues with accuracy though that seems to come with the territory with him. The strip sack that should have been is worrisome given his history with ball protection but he caught a break on it today with a dumb call. Overall, Allen's performance was very confidence inspiring.

9/15 Bills at Giants Postgame Thread
VW82 replied to Hapless Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Nice bounce back game from Josh. Brown and Beasley are living up to their contracts. Yay! And Frank Gore is still good?? Ladies and gentlemen we have an NFL offense There are guys on defense I’m tempted to call out but in the end we only gave up 14 points and a lot of their yardage (besides that first drive) was garbage time. Overall it was a nice win. -

Pats can keep their rings; I'll take the Bills
VW82 replied to Shaw66's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This is worth a read if anyone missed it at the time. I'm in the camp of 'all three of the Cheaters' Superbowls from the early 00s should be stripped.' For those wondering, Ernie Adams is still employed by the Patriots as their Director of Football research. What a joke. https://www.espn.com/espn/otl/story/_/id/13533995/split-nfl-new-england-patriots-apart -
Shrmur says Allen could potentially be a starter?? Huh?
VW82 replied to D521646's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Makes perfect sense he'd say that. Giants passed on Allen to take Barkley and now Eli looks like he's done. I expect Shurmer has heard a lot of noise about how they screwed up not going with Allen or Darnold. -
Josh Allen's "awful" 1st half...THIS is the article to read
VW82 replied to eball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Here are a few others that might be worth a second look: -the first half side arm throw to Zay out to the right that was no where near on target -the first half deep ball to Zay down the left side line that landed 10 yards over his head -the miss short left to Beasley on the drive with the botched snap -the miss to Knox on the cross in the 3rd where he got spun around 180 degrees because the ball was so far behind him -the negated turnover in the 3rd -the should-have-been-a-turnover drop by the Jets DB down the right sideline in the 3rd -the under throw in the endzone that would have been a pick had Mosley just turned around instead of going for the break up RE the actual INTs: 1. the Beasley tipped ball was low and behind him (i.e. away from his momentum). Rich Gannon put that one on Allen in the moment though I agree Beasley needs to shoulder responsibility there as well. As an aside, it looked a lot like a bunch of the missed connections with Zay from last year where poor ball placement contributed to the incompletion; 2. The Mosley tipped ball is on Allen. Mosley was a free rusher in Josh's direct line of sight and he threw it right at him. If Mosley had been preoccupied by a blocker and managed to get an arm free to tip it then I'd say great play, but that's not what happened. You can't expect to throw it directly above a free rusher's head and claim bad luck when he gets his hands (plural) on it. The fact it turned into an INT was a little unlucky but the ball getting tipped at the line wasn't. RE the fumbles: Dabol seemed to put the strip sack on Allen in his post game noting he has to do a better job with ball security. It's not like he got blindsided. The botched snap was tough given the lack of training camp reps between Allen and Morse. Hopefully that was the first and last time that happens. Despite all of that I thought Josh did some things well on Sunday (e.g sustained drives, quicker decision making). His improvement over last season is already evident, but given the number of poor plays I don't see how we can say he had a good game. -
Josh Allen's "awful" 1st half...THIS is the article to read
VW82 replied to eball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I listed only one of his mistakes in a reply to another poster who pointed out a few others because it isn't necessary to write a full dissertation each time you make a point. Josh had a hand in four turnovers. A fifth was called back on a penalty that didn't impact the play and a sixth didn't happen due to an egregious drop by a Jets DB. I don't think it's ridiculous to suggest it was a bad day. I read your post and I read Thurman Kelly's reply to you. I agree with his take. Further, I don't understand why you think nobody watches the games. I will go out on a limb and guess that the vast majority here not only watch the games but likely re-watch parts of them. I certainly do. I suspect people writing about the games for a living do as well given it's their job and all. The only people involved who are truly biased are us as fans. I've noticed you quote me a lot to tell me how ridiculous or idiotic or whatever you think I am. Let's remember we're both huge Bills fans so even though we disagree we probably have more common than you think -
Josh Allen's "awful" 1st half...THIS is the article to read
VW82 replied to eball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Pretty much this. I don't understand why we have to perform all these mental gymnastics trying to convince ourselves that he was actually good on Sunday. He did a lot of good things, yes, but overall? Way too many mistakes. Remember that pass to Knox on the crossing route that was so far behind him he got completely spun around? One game doesn't make him a bad QB or mean he's going to bust. He had a bad game against a soft Jets D where many of his bugaboos resurfaced. Why is it so hard to admit that? I expect he'll be much better this Sunday. -
That was disgusting. I hope McD submits it to the league for review.
-
I think the Singletary grade was due in part to his lackluster pass protection and other mistakes (i.e. drops and routes) in the passing game. The Milano and Hyde grades are a little surprising -- those guys looked great! Other than that everything else matches what I saw. Not sure what all the fuss is about. Go Sweeney!

Week 1: The good, the bad, and the missing
VW82 replied to Alphadawg7's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I thought Shaq Lawson was excellent. He's so skilled at batting down balls at the line and even though his initial rush isn't anything to write home about, his second effort yesterday was very good. There was a lot to like defensively vs the Jets and Shaq was near the top of the list. -
I really don't get all the PFF hate. Those guys have an excellent website IMO. They're basically doing what Dr Z (Paul Zimmerman from SI) did for all those years in watching every play of every game and isolating on each player, then grading them using a standardized grading rubric. It's detailed, objective analysis. Is there also opinion occasionally mixed in? Of course -- they're writers writing on a website. There are also zero other sites (as far as I'm aware) currently doing this for every NFL player. Perhaps the only reason we don't like them is because to date they've been hard on our young QB who has had his fair share of growing pains??
-
The biggest improvement I saw was in making quicker decisions. Josh left some plays on the field as a result but he made things easier on our o-line in the process. Also, there will surely be benefits to putting those quick decisions on tape. DCs are no longer going to be able to count on getting pressure rushing four which means we should see some better match ups and opportunities for big gains on hot routes.

First Half wasn't as awful as everyone is saying
VW82 replied to mjt328's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree with the OP to an extent. I'd much rather have an offense that moves the ball and occasionally makes mistakes than a mistake-free offense that doesn't move it. That said, there were WAY too many mistakes. We easily could have had six or seven turnovers through three quarters instead of just four. The average offense scores around 22 ppg. We scored 17 and gave them 8; netting 9 ppg on offense is straight up bad no matter how you slice it up, and they were technically -8 through three quarters, so perhaps it was just as awful as everyone said. It was only one game though and the defense looked as advertised so there's that. -
I thought Ford and Spain had rough days and Morse fumbling the snap obviously wasn't good but it's clear we have a much better unit overall. I still think we need to move Ford inside and have Nsekhe start @ RT with Feliciano @ LG. Clearly the coaching staff thinks Ford is a long-term answer at tackle.
