I don't disagree with you but do believe that only partially addresses the problem. Many solve the problem of unbearable poverty by turning to crime. I have a cousin that lives not very far from the new casino in the Finger Lakes and he has observed more obvious theft (things missing that he knows he did not misplace) in the year and change that the casino has been open than he has in the few decades prior to that casino. He has too many things to put it all in one building and keep under lock and key. For that matter locks, walls, and fences only keep the honest man honest. I hear plenty of stories of fences pulled down, cameras painted over, and panels of pole barns torn off so thieves can ply their trade. Back to the casino that is a cancer to many that hope to solve their money problems by winning money then when their meager paycheck is gone they turn to theft to recover the lost paycheck.

The Worst Acts of the Trump Administration
RochesterRob replied to Swill Merchant's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Certainly no small accomplishment and historians 100 years from now with full access to the facts may point out how big a bullet the US dodged on that. Unless we are dumb enough to elect Chelsea who no doubt will sweep up that dirt and fling it down by the pig pen for nobody to find. Americans beware! -
It's not a matter of hearing it but a matter of remembering it which most people here are guilty of. When I say "if you believe that the Bible should be the moral center of society" it is not a matter of people that are already inclined to follow it but people who have no exposure to it or have been conditioned to believe that religion is bad therefore the Bible is bad.
-
And with that statement you are missing what is taking place in society. Telling me that "nothing can replace responsibility" only works for people who already believe in that concept. How do you get the horse to the trough for those who believe in letting people do what ever they want to do even if it is bad for the person in question?

The picture would have been better if the "daughter" was 7 months along like "mom." Or lose that top for an athletic bra.
-
Quite a number of adults are not responsible and that is the point. And saying that they should be responsible does not get the job done in the trailer park nor the cup de sac. i go to church but would readily admit that I would strike out on a Bible themed Jeopardy program and so would most others here. I doubt most would know the Leviticus reference without looking up and that in its self is part of the problem if you believe that the Bible should be the moral center of our society.

I agree that a strong morally centered family is the best thing to hope for but just does not happen in a lot of instances and it is not just a minority problem. A father can be great at professing "thou shall not steal" but not cover the bases in other respects. A cousin grew up in a rural area where the rule was anything goes as long as you "don't hurt somebody." The only problem with that was they considered things such as arson OK because in theory the person would wake up and run out of the house before anybody got burned. You also don't hear anything in church about diddling your brother or sister but it sure would be good for mom and dad to cover that base before puberty so an incident does not happen at age 14 when the parents are out and the kids are home with a bottle of Jack Daniels sitting easily to get to by the kids. It would be nice if every father was like Mike Brady but even in the better homes dad does not fully cover what needs to be addressed.

This is a fairly astute observation. Too bad the OP was nonsense.

What can I say? I'm waiting on burgers and tater tots to recharge my batteries so to speak.

Tom Coughlin offended by... what, exactly?
RochesterRob replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Jags window of opportunity was last year with a decimated AFCS and don't see a big change in store for them next year. They need a different Khan running that team. You know. The "revenge is a dish best served cold" guy although I thought he was more imposing in his first Star Trek go-around. -
Too early to start the trade the farm for Rosa or Oliver threads?

Damn, you beat me to it.

Has anybody predicted that Tiberius will become the new pool boy complete with back rubbing privileges at Hillary's Chappaqua estate. Bill will be out of the picture as his "depression" will cause him to go on a prolonged sabbatical to Thailand.

Democratic 2020 Presidential Primary Thread
RochesterRob replied to snafu's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Not only do I agree that the Clinton's are not going away but the lack of Chelsea running for office this past fall makes me think that the Clinton's feel the longer road is the safer one for Chelsea. They are waiting for the Clinton Foundation and other problems to become ancient news before Chelsea runs for anything. Look for Chelsea to attempt to rise at some point during the 2020's. Congress in 2024 and POTUS in 2028 while Ma and Pa are still alive to see their handiwork in action. -
Edited title: Winds of Change for AFC East

Thanks for making this point. Without knowing how that breaks down it may tie the Jets' hands a little bit in certain bidding situations. -
If you want to blow somebody's mind who does not know the area well tell them West Seneca is north of Boston but leave out the part about Boston being a tiny community south of Buffalo. I knew a guy at college back in the 1980's that was enthralled with the idea of there being a Romulus in New York. Another college incident involved an air headed woman that was reading a partially folded map of New York and thinking that Long Island was a short drive from Rochester. Myself, I got tired of being late for things due to having poor understanding of where things were as a teen and studied a road map of the entire region around Buffalo and Rochester during Christmas break while in college freshman year. Having a map is a must anyways but after the third time of poor directions (the turnoff being the fifth left out of town versus the third for example) I made it a point to analyze ANY directions as how to get any place. Being a college student without an abundance of gas money I always found short cuts once I consulted the map.

The Media's Portrayal of Trump and His Presidency
RochesterRob replied to Nanker's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
While I would not completely deny the possibility of wanting to avoid military service altogether there would have been a few ways for Sr Trump to help Donald avoid the combat areas without involving a doctor. So I question that a given doctor would have been the only gatekeeper in such a matter. I've heard of people serving very "lite" time while in the military back then. Even people who lacked connections found ways to avoid combat if they were proactive such as joining the Air Force or Navy with the intention of becoming some kind of support personnel away from combat areas. That did not work for everybody but you stood a good chance if you did not sit around waiting for your draft notice. -
Ah! But we are talking about China as opposed to Asia in general which includes economic powers such as Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, and India. Even in a nation such as India which is fairly open to Western scrutiny things are not perfect as the country still has a hangover from the caste system. If I had to guess China is one of the most regressive Asian countries of any size.

I suggest that you read up on George Pullman and the concept of the company store. That 3 dollars most likely is going right back to their employer via price gouging on whatever consumer goods exist in their community. I would hazard a guess that if there is such a thing as a McDonald's in their community that is probably owned by the employer or somebody close to their employer. I doubt those workers have the freedoms that even the most economically down trodden American has.

I can't believe how far the broadcasting talent has declined. Back in the old days you might get Tom Hammond when the 2 win Bills faced the 2 win Oilers with the only drawback being he was a better golf guy but at least he still had a basic understanding of football and could track the action as it unfolded. Today you have guys such as Gumble who half the time has to wait for the officials to give the correct down and distance. Commentators that over state the obvious in "the Bills need first downs and a touchdown" to get back into a game. Or an overall clown show which is what Collinsworth has devolved into.

Reagan Was My Hero And Trump Is His Clone (Somewhat)
RochesterRob replied to 3rdnlng's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
As applied it is virtually never used in the context of an insulated wealthy person speaking out about issues in the world. Far more common is the use of the word penthouse and the phrase "the view from the penthouse..." A friend of mine from central NY (Syracuse) speaks of a show on the local PBS station titled "The Ivory Tower" which has a small collection of area college professors speaking of various issues from a left of center standpoint. I think that is unlikely they would fly with such a title for their show given the implications from the definition you provide. It would be self-mocking and I find it highly unlikely that they would engage in such behavior. I've seen the show a few times and am fascinated with their thought processes even though I seldom align with them. Might be worth a periodic review on this forum. -
Report: Jets to pursue Jim Harbaugh for HC

Years ago I had a Jets fan co-worker that would not buy gas at any other station besides a Hess station. Fortunately, there was a Hess station just 2 miles away for him. -

I'd have to check but I don't think that there is any oil money with the Johnson's. Just being the heirs to Johnson and Johnson health care products. Jurrah, the Bowlen family, Bud Adams (when he was alive), and the Hunt's are petroleum (oil) families. Our own Terry Pegula is natural gas. -
Report: Jets to pursue Jim Harbaugh for HC
RochesterRob replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Harbaugh is a funny (eccentric) guy in a lot of ways. I know when he played for the Colts he had a beef with Kelly among other problems that reportedly he let it be known for Buffalo not to approach him. He might still have a grudge against the Jets for the time Jeff Lageman (hypothetically) farted in his face at the bottom of a sack pile. That aside Harbaugh is treated like a king in his college gig so that might be the most important thing in his mind versus dealing with a possibly fickle ownership and fanbase of a NFL team.
