In Kroft's case, we don't know his particular set of circumstances. Does his wife need assistance, for example, with the baby? I don't think the team is requiring it, and each player and coach has to weigh for himself what they are willing to sacrifice in pursuit of a championship.

Remember. These guys have families...wives, kids. There is only so much you can do if wives work. Kroft has a new baby. Doctor visits, etc. Any place where you are in contact with anyone for 15 minutes or more puts you at risk.

You are exactly right. It didn't matter if Fields spun. Skalski got low and led with his helmet. The rule is in place to protect the defensive player as well.
