Look who’s number 2 - NE. If you are looking at what and why they are doing this - look no further than that team. A 21 personnel grouping - keeps the defense in base formation usually and when you spread it out - it gives easy access to the coverage scheme. If the team goes nickel - then you have the bigger bodies to run it down their throat. Rewatching the game it was obvious the problems this was causing with the defense as it slowed the blitz and gave Allen easy reads in the passing game- especially when they play with tempo and don’t allow substitution. I think as the season goes on you will see other variations- 2 TEs with Dimarco off and/or Gore and Singletary as the 2 RBs, but they wanted the most experience possible for that first drive to limit stupid penalties and if needed give JA protection.

Bills (1-0) at Jets (0-1) Postgame thread
Rochesterfan replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Agreed - just need to get a similar aggressive DC and you can see the fake coming in the route run on that throw. -
Not a problem - I had to read it a second time to get everything because I skimmed it first time through. The only thing they know for certain was the Dolphins brought in both Mayfield and Allen and did not bring in Darnold. The “rumor” is (like many others) he fell in love with Mayfields arm and Allen at the Senior Bowl, but it is hard to know the exact feeling on Darnold other than the current reports saying he was not wowed. My guess is now that he has to address it - there will be some spin about how he though Darnold should have been #1 and therefore it made no sense to scout, but knowing Gase - he might just ignore this and let it fester until it bleeds through into more reports like this.
-
It wasn’t about the right pick for the Jets - it was about his evaluation as a Dolphin HC. They mention in the article that some of it may be that he knew Darnold was going before the Dolphins pick - where as they were not sure if Allen and/or Mayfield might make it to their pick. He also states that nothing Darnold did WOWED him - not that he would fail, but that he was good at a lot of things, but not great. It just ends up being a bad look long term on a team with a questionable overall relationship between the HC and the team.

I believe that was confirmed on OBL with one of the good morning football guests. He stated that exact same thing - in NFL history No one with 14 catches had been held to under 100 yards.

DiMarco (Dabolls Swiss army knife)
Rochesterfan replied to Buffalo716's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
But you can’t utilize them to do the same thing. The TEs are all ok to good in-line blockers, but none of them are the lead blocker on runs that Dimarco is. The TEs do not read a play out of the backfield the way a RB does and therefore are not as good at leading a RB into a hole. The TEs would be better at splitting out, but the point of the original formation was a power running formation that they could morph into a wide split to get the Jets out of position and allow JA to read the defense and decide on a run or pass option and adjust the formation. I think you will see similar things in other games using 1 RB, 2TE, and 2WR, but I think early in the game they wanted a few more veterans on the first series hence Dimarco over the 2 rookie TEs. -

NE when they bring Develin out wide against teams with stout interiors an blitzes. Utilized several times against Rex Ryan’s Bills teams. I agree that Dimarco should not be the primary target, but if they are using the formation for a specific reason like limiting the blitzes the Jets can throw - then it was a win getting anything positive. -

Singletary may not get LB coverage - they may try to cover him with a DB because of what he showed in preseason. Then you do not get the man vs zone indicator and have to use a different motion. DiMarco they are going to cover 100% of the time with a LB - so you get the keys. I don’t think they believe Dimarco versus a LB is a huge mismatch. I think they used the formation for other things - especially to limit the LB blitzes Gregg’s could throw and get a read on coverage. -

Rochesterfan replied to Buffalo716's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Exactly and not only that - they had a 2WR, 1TE, 1RB, and the full back set going early in the game. It is a running formation, but then they audible out to a spread formation. If the LB follows the FB out wide - man coverage and you also pulled a big hitter out of the middle to allow you to run specific crossing routes. If the Jets tried to counter with more nickel personnel- the Bills would have stayed tight and ran the ball. Same personnel- different plays to force the defense to react. A great game plan. -
Boy - he didn’t learn from his time in Miami. These guys when they get fired really should take at least 1 year off to review what went wrong and how to improve. This is every bit as bad as Rex Ryan coming to Buffalo and putting on the same garbage show as with the Jets - he never learned. Gase is just as bad or worse - that was you offense that sucked and has continued to stink against McDermott’s D from the beginning.

Should Shaq be starting instead of Trent Murphy?
Rochesterfan replied to GreggTX's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I believe I gave my opinion. Don’t really care which one you start they both get a bunch of snaps. The fact they are playing on opposite sides should mean something as both could start, but that means sitting Hughes. I stand by my opinion that the coaches will decide who to start. The one thing I did not see is you actually state your opinion. Who would you start - not that it really matters since Shaq is not the one backing up Murphy, but we want to know your take. -
Should Shaq be starting instead of Trent Murphy?
Rochesterfan replied to GreggTX's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Don’t care both get about 40-50% of the snaps - as long as they keep playing - starting means nothing. They are different players and both have good plays and bad plays. I will let the coaches decide who to play when. I believe from the discussion with Sal - Shaq is spelling Hughes and Murphy is being spelled by Johnson and they are playing on opposite side. Shaq also moved inside a couple of times to rush from a pseudo DT position which gives him some different flexibility. -
Bills (1-0) at Jets (0-1) Postgame thread

What I love about this play (and shows me JA’s progression) is watch the safety. There was a great tweet with an end zone look right down the middle at JA and Brown that also showed me why the safety did not get there. Josh Allen used his eyes and the field to freeze the single high safety. Last year this was either a pick or a Pass break-up because Josh was staring down the receiver and did not trust what he saw. This play he looked at Brown - then moved his eyes to the middle of the field right at the safety. Then he peeks at Brown and quickly peaks back at the play developing right in front of the safety - then bang that ball is out and Brown does the rest. The safety never was in the play until Brown is crossing the goal line. Josh makes many mistakes, but he is progressing and you can really see the talent. -
The Safety. What did I miss?

Nope the announcers are correct - if any part of the ball is in the end zone - the ball is considered in the end zone - it makes perfect sense both ways are the same. -

It is a scoring play - coaches can’t challenge - it is automatically reviewed. -
Bills 17, Jets 16!! Game Balls...
Rochesterfan replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Thanks for pointing that out. The inaccurate line of bull has got to stop as a narrative- 65% and he had at least 3 balls hit receivers on the hands that were accurate throws. He threw the ball away at least 2 times. He had at least 2 balls that got hit at the line of scrimmage. Even his 2 really poor decisions that were jumped by Jets defenders - the passes were spot on the receivers. That means 9 of the 13 incompletions were either on target or because of the batting of the ball at the line of scrimmage we won’t know. Josh Allen was extremely accurate with the ball today. It does not change that he had some bad decisions and a ton of bad luck early in the game, but his improvements from last year was remarkable. The touch passes, the stepping up in the pocket, the changing of the plays at the line of scrimmage - he has progressed far beyond where he was and you can see why people think he has such a high ceiling. The narrative will continue to be about the inaccurate plays and the TOs in this game because those that said he was a mistake have to justify their hot takes, but the truth is he outplayed Darnold today, is better than Rosen, and even outplayed Mayfield. The only QB from last year playing better is Jackson and that guy just played his butt off. -
Bills 17, Jets 16!! Game Balls...

That touch pass to Beasley that he dropped is the perfect example - Allen read the play beautifully and with perfect touch put it right into Beasley’s hands. He has made that throw throw a few times this season (preseason) and it shows so much progress for who he was last year. There was also a great video of the Brown TD from the end zone and you can see Allen look at Brown - look to the middle of the field at the safety- peak at Brown - then quickly move his head back to the middle of the field just before throwing the TD pass. That would have been a pick early last year because Allen was staring down receivers in that situation, but he has learned. He is not perfect, but man is he exciting. -

I don’t think he was on a pitch count - this is Gase’s offense - how many times in Miami did they stick with the run or make sure the RB stayed involved? I think Bell was out there almost every play, but he is going to be criminally underutilized for his salary in this offense. Part of the reason Gase was so upset about how much they paid Bell. -
Agreed - they kept the same personnel and lined up tight and they would shift to spread because the Jets kept base personnel in and passing gave the Bills the numbers advantage. They way outgained the Jets and moved the Ball with ease when they had them spread out. They then hurt themselves with missed blocks leading to a fumble. A tipped pass leading to a pick 6. Another tipped pass getting picked. I preferred to see the offense they broke out this game early than the more run oriented gameplans of the last few years.

Bills (1-0) at Jets (0-1) Postgame thread
Rochesterfan replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yeah - my 17 yr old daughter was working on homework until the middle of the 3rd quarter. She came down and things turned around. The best part was she was out at the fridge getting a snack when the first TD was scored and spent the rest of the game out in the kitchen standing looking at the fridge. She didn’t dare even peak around at the TV. What a trooper! We kept her up to speed, but she refused to move. ? -
Antonio Brown RELEASED, signed by PATS
Rochesterfan replied to Chandler#81's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If this was his plan and he truly hated the Bills - wouldn’t he want to screw them worse? Wouldn’t he want to go there and twist a knife to force his way out. If this was his plan - why worry about getting a huge contract extension with guaranteed money - the reason he wanted to go to the Raiders. It was almost the reason they couldn’t cut him or move on. If this was his plan - it would of made more sense to keep his original contract and act crazy because then he gets cut quicker. They have less tied to him. -
Gruden's destruction of the Raiders
Rochesterfan replied to dave mcbride's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
So the fact the starting QB has talked about all the time wasted working with AB and the team leaders working to fix this situation. The time Gruden spent trying to repair the situation and then talk about the cut. The time the team spent working with AB to get him ready and then to have him not show up, talk about a suspension, figure he will be out, then heartfelt apology, then back in as a teammate and practice and finally uncertainty and then the cut. That did not impact gameplans and coaches and individual players that will be covering or playing - especially the QB that has made multiple comments through his brother. I agree the average - low tier players are not impacted, but your starters, leaders - they are dealing with the drama, the questions, and trying to keep the team together and focused. It certainly impacts 1/3 to 1/2 the roster and mostly the guys that are going to play. -
Antonio Brown RELEASED, signed by PATS
Rochesterfan replied to Chandler#81's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don’t get this thought process at all? So the premise is that AB wanted to be on a good team like NE. So he acted nuts in Pittsburgh for 2 plus years to get a big extension there (a winning franchise with a HOF QB and an African American head coach) to force his way out via trade to a team like the Raiders - so he could be free to sign in NE? Then he has forethought to plan to force whatever team he is traded to to write him a big contract extension with lots of guaranteed money - just so that he can act insane to get that contract voided so that he can then sign a minimum/low level contract with what ever team he wanted. That is AB level of crazy in a theory because if he wanted to go wherever he wanted - he could of not signed the original Pittsburgh contract and forced himself to be a FA as they already had Bell on the franchise tag. Now how about we truly look at this logically. AB has been all about the money for years. He is/was a great player, but he wanted to be paid like the best and have that money guaranteed. Pittsburgh gave him a fair contract and he took it just before the WR market exploded and suddenly the contract there was not good enough. The erratic behavior got worse as he felt undervalued. Finally last season it came to a head after getting into Tomlin’s dog house and he disappeared the last week with a chance to make the playoffs and after the fines and comments wanted out of Pittsburgh. Several teams inquire, but when it becomes known he wants a big extension with upfront money - most teams including the Bills back off. The Raiders eventually work out a deal with huge money and guarantees and AB seems content. The Raiders give him a ton of freedom and back him in the cryogenic foot issue and the helmet issue. After those are decided- the GM comments he needs to come back, but AB skips additional practices and a walk through (similar to Pittsburgh). The Raiders fine him and he explodes and then goes after the GM. Here is is where I think your theory falls apart. If he really wanted to be gone - why would he apologize- he would have doubled down and he would have been suspended and cut anyway. Why did he apologize- because the real driving force is and was the guaranteed money!!!!! When he learned that he could lose that - he immediately came crawling back with a tear filled team apology. Everything was great - except the team informed them personally and via a formal letter he was being fined and the wording “could” void his guarantees. The potential loss of the money then precipitates the bizarre video call with Gruden and the release me statement. Now he is free to sign, but who is going to pay him 30+ million in bonuses and 1 million per game. I think everyone saying he will be back is probably wrong - it is not a team he wants - it money and respect and I can not see him taking a 5-6 million dollar prove it deal with no guarantees - even from NE. He is looking for 16+ million and now with the Julio Jones signing he will expect even more. I think he is done until he decides to play for less and see what happens. That is my opinion, but it seems to make sense with his behavior much more than he wanted to be in NE from the beginning.
